Anatomical Variation in the Branching Pattern of the Femoral Nerve Among Undergraduate Students

Abstract

The study examines anatomical variation in the branching pattern of the femoral nerve among undergraduate students, with emphasis on differences in the number, arrangement, origin, and distribution of its branches within the anterior compartment of the thigh. The femoral nerve is the major nerve of the lumbar plexus supplying motor and sensory structures of the anterior thigh and contributing to sensation in the medial aspect of the leg and foot. Knowledge of variations in its branching pattern is important for understanding lower limb neuroanatomy and for supporting clinical procedures involving the femoral region. The study will assess the branching pattern of the femoral nerve among undergraduate students using appropriate standardized anatomical and imaging-based assessment procedures. The specific objectives will include identifying the major branches of the femoral nerve, documenting variations in the number and arrangement of its muscular, cutaneous, and articular branches, determining the points of origin and distribution of selected branches, and assessing the frequency and pattern of the observed anatomical variations among the participants. A cross-sectional descriptive research design will be adopted for the study. An appropriate sample of undergraduate students will be selected using a suitable sampling technique, while the femoral nerve and its branches will be evaluated using standardized anatomical landmarks and appropriate imaging or anatomical examination procedures. Data obtained will be analyzed using descriptive statistics such as frequency, percentage, mean, and standard deviation, with appropriate inferential tests applied where necessary to determine significant differences in the observed branching patterns. The study is expected to reveal variations in the branching pattern of the femoral nerve among the participants. Differences may be observed in the number, origin, course, and distribution of selected muscular, cutaneous, and articular branches. Some branching patterns may occur more frequently than others, while certain anatomical characteristics may demonstrate statistically significant variation between individuals, reflecting the normal diversity of peripheral nerve anatomy. The findings will be useful to anatomists, neurologists, orthopedic surgeons, general surgeons, anesthetists, radiologists, physiotherapists, and other healthcare professionals involved in the assessment and management of the lower limb. The study may provide useful reference information for understanding femoral nerve anatomy, interpreting relevant imaging findings, planning regional nerve blocks and surgical procedures, and reducing the risk of inadvertent nerve injury during interventions involving the femoral region. The study will conclude by documenting the anatomical variations in the branching pattern of the femoral nerve among undergraduate students. It is recommended that awareness of normal variations in femoral nerve branching be considered during anatomical, radiological, and clinical assessment of the lower limb, while further studies involving larger and more diverse populations should be conducted to establish broader reference data on femoral nerve anatomy.
