Impact of Visual Accounting Timelines on Students’ Retention of Accounting Procedures in Nigerian Universities

Abstract

Retention of accounting procedures is an important aspect of Accounting Education because students are expected to remember and correctly apply sequential procedures when preparing accounting records, processing transactions, and solving practical accounting problems. However, some Accounting Education students may experience difficulty retaining complex accounting procedures when instruction relies predominantly on conventional explanations, verbal presentations, and written exercises. Visual Accounting Timelines provide a structured visual representation of accounting procedures by arranging related steps, transactions, documentation processes, and accounting activities in chronological or sequential order. The use of timelines may help students organize information, recognize relationships among accounting procedures, and retain procedural knowledge over time. Against this background, this study investigates the impact of Visual Accounting Timelines on students’ retention of accounting procedures in Nigerian universities. The study will be anchored on Dual Coding Theory, Cognitive Theory of Multimedia Learning, and Experiential Learning Theory. Dual Coding Theory explains how information presented through both verbal and visual representations may create interconnected memory pathways that facilitate learning and recall. The Cognitive Theory of Multimedia Learning emphasizes how appropriately designed visual and verbal information can support students’ understanding and retention while managing cognitive processing demands. Experiential Learning Theory explains how students may strengthen procedural knowledge through active engagement, application, reflection, and repeated practice. Collectively, these theoretical perspectives provide a suitable framework for explaining how Visual Accounting Timelines may influence students’ retention of accounting procedures. The study will adopt a quantitative quasi-experimental research design. The population will comprise Accounting Education students enrolled in selected Nigerian universities. A multistage sampling technique will be used to select states, universities, departments, levels of study, classes, and eligible students. Data will be collected using structured questionnaires, accounting-procedure retention tests, visual timeline learning materials, practical accounting tasks, observation checklists, performance assessment rubrics, immediate post-tests, delayed retention tests, and pre-test and post-test assessments. Visual Accounting Timelines will be assessed using indicators such as chronological presentation of accounting procedures, sequential arrangement of accounting steps, transaction-flow representation, source-document sequencing, journal-entry sequencing, ledger-posting sequence, accounting-cycle representation, trial-balance preparation sequence, adjusting-entry sequence, financial-statement preparation sequence, closing-entry sequence, bank-reconciliation sequence, inventory-recording sequence, payroll-processing sequence, cash-management sequence, documentation-flow representation, use of visual symbols, use of arrows and connectors, use of labels, use of headings, use of numbering, use of colour coding where appropriate, visual grouping of related procedures, distinction between completed and pending steps, identification of starting and ending points, linking of related accounting activities, integration of examples, integration of practical exercises, lecturer explanation, student observation, guided interpretation, individual timeline construction, group timeline construction, timeline completion exercises, timeline sequencing exercises, error-identification activities, procedure-matching activities, procedure-reconstruction activities, repeated visual review, classroom display, digital timeline presentation, printed timeline materials, interactive timeline activities, learner-generated timelines, peer discussion, lecturer feedback, reflective activities, and progressively complex timeline exercises. Students’ retention of accounting procedures will be assessed using indicators such as recall of accounting steps, identification of correct procedure sequences, reconstruction of accounting procedures, recognition of appropriate transaction-processing stages, recall of source-document procedures, recall of journal-entry procedures, recall of ledger-posting procedures, recall of trial-balance procedures, recall of adjusting-entry procedures, recall of financial-statement preparation procedures, recall of closing-entry procedures, recall of bank-reconciliation procedures, recall of inventory-accounting procedures, recall of payroll-accounting procedures, recall of cash-management procedures, ability to apply retained procedures to accounting problems, ability to identify omitted steps, ability to detect incorrectly ordered steps, ability to distinguish similar procedures, ability to remember procedural relationships, ability to recall procedures after a delay, ability to transfer retained procedures to new accounting situations, and overall procedural retention performance. Descriptive statistics will be used to summarize students’ demographic and academic characteristics, exposure to Visual Accounting Timelines, learning experiences, and accounting-procedure retention scores. Inferential statistical techniques, including paired and independent t-tests, analysis of covariance (ANCOVA), correlation analysis, and multiple regression analysis where appropriate, will be used to determine the impact of Visual Accounting Timelines on students’ retention of accounting procedures. Where a quasi-experimental design is adopted, students’ immediate and delayed retention scores before and after exposure to Visual Accounting Timelines may be compared with those of a control group receiving conventional instruction to determine changes associated with the intervention. Diagnostic tests will also be conducted to assess the reliability, validity, and robustness of the findings. The study is expected to find that Visual Accounting Timelines have a significant positive impact on students’ retention of accounting procedures in Nigerian universities. Students exposed to structured visual timelines are expected to demonstrate better immediate and delayed retention of accounting procedures than students taught primarily through conventional instructional approaches. Chronological presentation may help students understand the order in which accounting activities occur. Sequential arrangements may improve students’ ability to remember related accounting steps. Transaction-flow representations may strengthen students’ understanding of how business transactions move from source documents to accounting records. Source-document sequencing may improve recall of documentation procedures. Journal-entry and ledger-posting timelines may strengthen students’ ability to remember the relationship between transaction analysis, journal entries, and ledger accounts. Accounting-cycle timelines may improve students’ ability to recall the progression from transaction identification through recording, classification, trial balance, adjustment, financial-statement preparation, and closing procedures. Trial-balance preparation timelines may strengthen students’ understanding of the steps required to compile and verify accounting balances. Adjusting-entry timelines may improve recall of the procedures involved in recognizing and recording adjustments. Financial-statement preparation timelines may strengthen students’ ability to remember the sequence through which accounting information is transformed into financial reports. Closing-entry timelines may improve students’ recall of the procedures required at the end of an accounting period. Bank-reconciliation timelines may help students remember the sequence for comparing bank records with cash-book records and identifying reconciling items. Inventory-recording timelines may improve students’ retention of procedures associated with stock transactions and valuation records. Payroll-processing timelines may strengthen students’ recall of procedures for processing employee earnings and related deductions. Cash-management timelines may improve students’ retention of procedures for receiving, recording, safeguarding, and reconciling cash. Documentation-flow representations may help students recognize relationships among source documents, journals, ledgers, and supporting records. Visual symbols, arrows, labels, headings, and numbering may provide additional cues that support procedural recall. Visual grouping may help students distinguish related accounting activities and reduce confusion between procedures. Clear starting and ending points may strengthen students’ understanding of procedural boundaries. Linking related activities may improve students’ ability to recognize how one accounting procedure leads to another. Practical examples may help students connect visual representations with actual accounting tasks. Guided interpretation may support students as they learn to read and apply timelines. Individual timeline-construction exercises may strengthen active recall and procedural organization. Group timeline activities may promote discussion and collaborative understanding. Timeline-completion exercises may strengthen students’ ability to identify missing accounting steps. Sequencing exercises may improve students’ ability to arrange procedures correctly. Error-identification activities may strengthen students’ ability to recognize incorrect procedural sequences. Procedure-matching exercises may improve students’ ability to connect accounting activities with their appropriate stages. Procedure-reconstruction activities may strengthen students’ ability to reproduce accounting processes without direct instructional prompts. Repeated visual review may strengthen long-term retention by providing recurring memory cues. Classroom display may allow students to revisit important accounting procedures during instruction. Digital timeline presentations may provide flexible opportunities for reviewing procedures. Printed timeline materials may support independent study and revision. Interactive timeline activities may encourage active engagement with procedural information. Learner-generated timelines may strengthen deeper processing by requiring students to organize accounting knowledge themselves. Peer discussion may reinforce procedural understanding through explanation and comparison. Lecturer feedback may help students correct incorrectly remembered procedures. Reflective activities may encourage students to identify areas of procedural difficulty. Progressively complex timeline exercises may prepare students to retain more advanced accounting procedures. However, the effectiveness of Visual Accounting Timelines may be constrained by poor instructional design, overcrowded timelines, excessive visual information, inadequate lecturer training, limited access to digital learning technologies, unreliable electricity supply, insufficient computers and projection facilities, large class sizes, limited instructional time, poor-quality visual materials, inadequate integration with practical accounting activities, low student engagement, limited opportunities for repeated review, and lecturers’ overreliance on conventional teaching approaches. The study therefore expects clear, logically organized, appropriately designed, interactive, practically oriented, and consistently applied Visual Accounting Timelines to contribute significantly to improved retention of accounting procedures among Accounting Education students in Nigerian universities. The study is expected to contribute to the literature on Visual Accounting Timelines, retention of accounting procedures, Dual Coding Theory, Cognitive Theory of Multimedia Learning, Experiential Learning Theory, accounting education, visual learning, accounting instruction, procedural learning, accounting-cycle instruction, transaction processing, source-document procedures, journal-entry procedures, ledger-posting procedures, trial-balance procedures, adjusting-entry procedures, financial-statement preparation, closing procedures, bank reconciliation, inventory accounting, payroll accounting, cash management, practical accounting education, instructional technology, digital learning, visual instructional materials, memory retention, learning outcomes, Accounting Education students, Nigerian universities, and Accounting Education in Nigeria. The findings will provide useful information to the National Universities Commission, university administrators, Accounting Education departments, accounting educators, curriculum developers, instructional designers, educational technology specialists, professional accounting bodies, and policymakers regarding strategies for improving students’ retention of accounting procedures. The study will also provide evidence-based recommendations for integrating Visual Accounting Timelines into Accounting Education programmes, developing clear and standardized visual representations of accounting procedures, incorporating digital and printed timeline resources into classroom instruction, strengthening students’ procedural recall through repeated visual review, combining timelines with practical accounting exercises, training accounting educators in effective visual instructional design, improving access to digital learning facilities, encouraging students to construct their own accounting timelines, and aligning accounting instruction with innovative and student-centred teaching approaches in Nigerian universities.
