Effect of E-Invoicing Education on Digital Tax Compliance Knowledge among Accounting Education Students in Nigeria
Abstract
The increasing digitalization of tax administration has created a growing need for accounting graduates who understand electronic invoicing (e-invoicing) and other technology-driven tax compliance systems. E-invoicing enables the electronic generation, transmission, validation, and processing of invoices and can improve the accuracy, traceability, transparency, and efficiency of tax administration. As tax authorities increasingly adopt digital systems for taxpayer registration, invoicing, reporting, and monitoring, accounting education students require adequate knowledge of e-invoicing processes and their implications for tax compliance. In Nigeria, the transition toward digital tax administration has increased the importance of preparing future accounting professionals and educators to understand electronic invoicing, digital tax records, electronic tax reporting, and related compliance requirements. However, limited exposure to e-invoicing education, inadequate practical training, insufficient digital resources, and gaps in students' understanding of digital tax systems may affect their preparedness for contemporary tax practice. Against this background, this study investigates the effect of e-invoicing education on digital tax compliance knowledge among accounting education students in Nigeria. The study will be anchored on the Technology Acceptance Model (TAM), Human Capital Theory, and Constructivist Learning Theory. The Technology Acceptance Model explains how students' perceptions of the usefulness and ease of use of electronic invoicing and digital tax technologies may influence their willingness to learn and utilize such systems. Human Capital Theory explains how investment in specialized tax and digital accounting education can improve students' knowledge, competencies, productivity, and future employability. Constructivist Learning Theory emphasizes active participation, practical application, problem-solving, and knowledge construction through meaningful learning experiences, providing a basis for examining how practical e-invoicing education may improve students' understanding of digital tax compliance. Collectively, these theoretical perspectives provide a suitable framework for explaining how e-invoicing education may influence digital tax compliance knowledge among accounting education students in Nigeria. The study will adopt a quantitative quasi-experimental or analytical cross-sectional research design. The study population will comprise undergraduate and postgraduate accounting education students enrolled in selected universities and institutions offering accounting education programmes in Nigeria. A multistage sampling technique will be used to select geopolitical zones, states, universities or institutions, faculties or departments, levels of study, and eligible accounting education students. E-invoicing education will be assessed using indicators such as exposure to e-invoicing instruction, frequency and duration of training, electronic invoice generation, invoice validation, digital invoice transmission, electronic record keeping, taxpayer identification, transaction documentation, value-added tax information, integration of invoicing with accounting systems, electronic tax reporting, digital tax records, practical demonstrations, case studies, simulations, and use of relevant digital tax platforms. Digital tax compliance knowledge will be assessed using indicators such as understanding of electronic invoicing requirements, knowledge of digital tax documentation, taxpayer obligations, electronic record-keeping requirements, tax reporting procedures, invoice accuracy, tax identification requirements, VAT-related information, compliance deadlines, digital tax payment procedures, consequences of non-compliance, data security, and ability to apply digital tax compliance principles to practical scenarios. Data will be collected using structured questionnaires, standardized digital tax compliance knowledge tests, e-invoicing practical exercises, scenario-based questions, case studies, and pre-test and post-test assessments where a quasi-experimental intervention is adopted. Descriptive statistics will be used to summarize students' demographic and academic characteristics, exposure to digital tax education, e-invoicing experience, sources of tax information, and levels of digital tax compliance knowledge. Inferential statistical techniques, including chi-square tests, paired and independent t-tests, correlation analysis, and multiple regression analysis where appropriate, will be used to determine the effect of e-invoicing education on digital tax compliance knowledge. Where a quasi-experimental design is adopted, digital tax compliance knowledge scores before and after the educational intervention may be compared with those of a comparison group to determine changes associated with the intervention. Diagnostic tests will also be conducted to assess the reliability, validity, and robustness of the findings. The study is expected to find that e-invoicing education has a significant positive effect on digital tax compliance knowledge among accounting education students in Nigeria. Students exposed to structured, practical, and current e-invoicing education are expected to demonstrate stronger knowledge of electronic invoicing procedures, digital tax documentation, taxpayer obligations, VAT-related requirements, electronic record keeping, tax reporting, and consequences of non-compliance than students with limited exposure. Practical demonstrations and simulations may help students understand how electronic invoices are generated, validated, transmitted, stored, and integrated with accounting and tax processes. E-invoicing education may also improve students' ability to identify errors in digital invoices, understand the relationship between accounting records and tax information, and apply digital tax compliance requirements to realistic business situations. However, limited access to digital tax platforms, inadequate internet connectivity, unreliable electricity, insufficiently trained lecturers, outdated instructional materials, rapidly changing tax regulations, and limited practical exposure may constrain effective learning. The study therefore expects current, practical, technology-supported, and professionally relevant e-invoicing education to contribute significantly to improved digital tax compliance knowledge among accounting education students in Nigeria. The study is expected to contribute to the literature on e-invoicing education, digital tax compliance, accounting education, tax education, electronic taxation, digital accounting, tax administration, educational technology, and higher education in Nigeria. The findings will provide useful information to the National Universities Commission, universities, accounting education departments, accounting educators, tax authorities, professional accounting bodies, curriculum developers, employers, technology providers, and policymakers regarding strategies for strengthening digital tax competencies among future accounting educators and professionals. The study will also provide evidence-based recommendations for integrating e-invoicing and digital tax administration into accounting education curricula, improving access to practical e-invoicing training platforms, strengthening lecturers' knowledge of digital taxation, incorporating realistic tax-compliance simulations into accounting courses, updating instructional materials in line with current tax requirements, promoting collaboration between universities and tax authorities, and preparing accounting education students for Nigeria's increasingly digital tax administration environment.
