Impact of Accounting Infographics on Students’ Understanding of Financial Information in Nigerian Universities

Abstract

Understanding financial information is an essential competency for Accounting Education students because accounting professionals are expected to interpret financial data, identify important financial information, understand accounting reports, and use financial information to support informed decisions. However, many Accounting Education students may experience difficulties in understanding financial information presented in conventional numerical, tabular, and textual formats. Accounting Infographics provide a visual approach to presenting financial information through charts, diagrams, icons, timelines, summaries, comparisons, and other graphical elements that may simplify complex accounting information and improve students’ comprehension. The use of accounting infographics may therefore provide an engaging instructional approach for helping students understand financial information more effectively. Against this background, this study investigates the impact of Accounting Infographics on students’ understanding of financial information in Nigerian universities. The study will be anchored on Dual Coding Theory, Cognitive Theory of Multimedia Learning, and Constructivist Learning Theory. Dual Coding Theory explains that information presented through complementary verbal and visual representations may improve learners’ understanding and recall. Cognitive Theory of Multimedia Learning emphasizes how learners process information through verbal and visual channels and how appropriately designed multimedia materials can support meaningful learning. Constructivist Learning Theory emphasizes the active construction of knowledge as students connect new information with their existing understanding through meaningful learning experiences. Collectively, these theoretical perspectives provide a suitable framework for explaining how Accounting Infographics may influence students’ understanding of financial information. The study will adopt a quantitative quasi-experimental research design. The population will comprise Accounting Education students enrolled in selected Nigerian universities. A multistage sampling technique will be used to select states, universities, departments, levels of study, classes, and eligible students. Data will be collected using structured questionnaires, financial-information understanding assessment instruments, accounting infographic materials, practical interpretation tasks, scenario-based questions, observation checklists, and pre-test and post-test assessments. Accounting Infographics will be assessed using indicators such as use of financial charts, graphical presentation of accounting information, financial-data summaries, visual comparison of financial figures, accounting diagrams, financial timelines, financial-process illustrations, financial-ratio illustrations, financial-statement summaries, visual classification of financial information, colour-coded accounting information, icons and symbols, tables combined with graphics, flowcharts, dashboards, visual explanations of financial transactions, visual explanations of accounting concepts, graphical presentation of revenues and expenses, graphical presentation of assets and liabilities, visual presentation of equity information, graphical cash-flow information, visual presentation of financial-performance indicators, visual presentation of financial-position information, visual presentation of accounting relationships, infographic-based examples, lecturer demonstrations, guided interpretation activities, individual infographic-analysis tasks, group activities, case-based infographic exercises, repeated exposure, feedback, and learner participation. Students’ understanding of financial information will be assessed using indicators such as ability to identify financial information, interpret financial figures, distinguish financial statement components, understand financial terminology, identify assets, liabilities, equity, revenue, expenses, and cash flows, interpret financial statements, compare financial figures, identify financial trends, interpret financial ratios, understand financial-performance indicators, interpret financial-position indicators, understand cash-flow information, identify changes in financial values, recognize relationships among financial figures, interpret percentages, understand financial summaries, identify relevant financial information, distinguish relevant from irrelevant information, interpret graphical financial information, interpret accounting tables, understand accounting charts, interpret financial diagrams, analyze financial information, draw conclusions from financial data, identify financial patterns, identify financial differences, identify financial similarities, interpret financial comparisons, understand accounting processes, interpret financial transactions, understand financial-reporting information, identify financial information required for decision-making, apply accounting knowledge to financial information, solve financial-information problems, make informed accounting judgments, communicate financial information, explain financial information, summarize financial information, and demonstrate overall financial-information understanding. Descriptive statistics will be used to summarize students’ demographic and academic characteristics, exposure to Accounting Infographics, learning experiences, and financial-information understanding levels. Inferential statistical techniques, including paired and independent t-tests, analysis of covariance (ANCOVA), correlation analysis, and multiple regression analysis where appropriate, will be used to determine the impact of Accounting Infographics on students’ understanding of financial information. Where a quasi-experimental design is adopted, financial-information understanding scores before and after exposure to Accounting Infographics may be compared with those of a control group receiving conventional instructional materials to determine changes associated with the intervention. Diagnostic tests will also be conducted to assess the reliability, validity, and robustness of the findings. The study is expected to find that Accounting Infographics have a significant positive impact on students’ understanding of financial information in Nigerian universities. Students exposed to well-designed accounting infographics are expected to demonstrate improved ability to identify, interpret, compare, analyze, summarize, and communicate financial information. Financial-chart activities may improve students’ ability to understand numerical relationships and financial trends. Graphical presentations may make complex financial information easier to interpret. Financial-data summaries may help students identify important information quickly. Visual comparisons may improve students’ ability to distinguish differences and similarities among financial figures. Accounting diagrams may strengthen students’ understanding of relationships among accounting elements. Financial timelines may improve students’ understanding of the sequence and timing of financial events. Financial-process illustrations may help students understand accounting procedures more clearly. Financial-ratio illustrations may improve students’ ability to interpret financial-performance measures. Financial-statement summaries may strengthen students’ understanding of the structure and content of financial statements. Visual classification activities may improve students’ ability to distinguish assets, liabilities, equity, revenues, and expenses. Colour-coded information may help students differentiate related financial categories. Icons and symbols may provide additional visual cues for interpreting financial information. Flowcharts may improve students’ understanding of accounting processes and relationships. Dashboards may strengthen students’ ability to interpret multiple financial indicators simultaneously. Visual transaction explanations may improve students’ understanding of how business transactions affect financial records. Graphical presentations of revenues and expenses may strengthen students’ understanding of income and expenditure patterns. Visual presentations of assets and liabilities may improve students’ understanding of financial position. Graphical cash-flow information may improve students’ ability to understand cash inflows and outflows. Financial-performance indicators may become easier to interpret when presented visually. Visual financial-position information may help students identify changes in organizational resources and obligations. Visual accounting relationships may strengthen students’ ability to connect different financial concepts. Infographic-based examples may provide practical contexts for applying accounting knowledge. Lecturer demonstrations may provide clear explanations of how financial information should be interpreted. Guided interpretation activities may support students as they develop financial-analysis skills. Individual infographic-analysis tasks may strengthen independent learning. Group activities may promote discussion and collaborative interpretation of financial information. Case-based infographic exercises may expose students to realistic financial-analysis situations. Repeated exposure to visual financial information may strengthen comprehension and confidence. Feedback may help students correct interpretation errors and improve their understanding. However, the effectiveness of Accounting Infographics may be constrained by poor infographic design, excessive visual elements, inaccurate financial information, inadequate lecturer training, limited access to digital devices, unreliable electricity supply, poor internet connectivity, insufficient instructional technology, large class sizes, limited classroom time, inadequate access to appropriate accounting software, outdated instructional materials, low student digital-literacy levels, limited access to relevant financial datasets, and weak integration of visual learning materials into Accounting Education curricula. The study therefore expects accurate, well-designed, relevant, accessible, and appropriately integrated Accounting Infographics to contribute significantly to improved understanding of financial information among Accounting Education students in Nigerian universities. The study is expected to contribute to the literature on Accounting Infographics, financial-information understanding, visual learning, accounting education, financial literacy, accounting instruction, Dual Coding Theory, Cognitive Theory of Multimedia Learning, Constructivist Learning Theory, financial-data visualization, financial charts, accounting diagrams, financial-statement interpretation, financial-ratio interpretation, financial analysis, accounting concepts, financial reporting, accounting technology, digital learning, multimedia instruction, practical accounting education, and Accounting Education in Nigeria. The findings will provide useful information to the National Universities Commission, university administrators, Accounting Education departments, accounting educators, curriculum developers, educational-technology providers, professional accounting bodies, employers, and policymakers regarding strategies for improving students’ understanding of financial information. The study will also provide evidence-based recommendations for integrating Accounting Infographics into Accounting Education programmes, developing accurate and learner-centred financial visualizations, improving lecturers’ capacity to design and use accounting infographics, incorporating financial-data visualization into accounting instruction, providing students with practical infographic-interpretation activities, strengthening digital learning resources, and aligning accounting instruction with contemporary approaches to financial-information presentation and interpretation in Nigerian universities.
