Influence of Waste Management Education on Household Waste Disposal Practices in Urban Communities in Nigeria

Abstract

Poor household waste management remains an important environmental and public health concern in many urban communities in Nigeria. Inadequate waste disposal may contribute to environmental pollution, blocked drainage systems, flooding, unpleasant odours, proliferation of disease vectors, and increased risks of communicable and other health problems. Rapid urbanization, population growth, increased consumption, inadequate waste collection infrastructure, indiscriminate dumping, open burning, and limited public awareness may contribute to poor household waste management practices. Waste management education provides households with information about appropriate waste segregation, storage, collection, recycling, reuse, composting, safe disposal methods, environmental consequences of improper waste disposal, and the health risks associated with poor waste management. Household waste disposal practices refer to the methods households use to store, separate, collect, transport, recycle, reuse, burn, or dispose of solid waste generated within the household. In urban Nigeria, inadequate knowledge, irregular waste collection services, limited access to disposal facilities, cost of waste collection, and established disposal habits may influence household waste disposal practices. Effective waste management education may improve household knowledge and encourage safer and more environmentally responsible waste disposal behaviours. Against this background, this study investigates the influence of waste management education on household waste disposal practices in urban communities in Nigeria. The study is anchored on the Health Belief Model, Social Cognitive Theory, and Knowledge-Attitude-Practice framework. The Health Belief Model explains preventive environmental health behaviour through perceived susceptibility, perceived severity, perceived benefits, perceived barriers, and cues to action, providing a basis for understanding households' decisions to adopt appropriate waste disposal practices. Social Cognitive Theory emphasizes the interaction between knowledge, self-efficacy, social influences, behavioural capabilities, and environmental conditions in shaping household environmental practices. The Knowledge-Attitude-Practice framework provides a basis for examining how improved knowledge and attitudes resulting from waste management education may influence waste disposal behaviour. Collectively, these theoretical perspectives provide a suitable framework for explaining how waste management education may influence household waste disposal practices in urban communities in Nigeria. The study will adopt a quantitative quasi-experimental research design. Primary data will be collected from household heads or responsible adult household members in selected urban communities in Nigeria using a structured interviewer-administered questionnaire and an observational waste management checklist. A multistage sampling technique will be employed to select states, local government areas, urban communities, households, and eligible respondents. Where feasible, selected communities or participant groups will be assigned to intervention and comparison groups. Households in the intervention group will receive structured waste management education covering proper waste storage, waste segregation, collection and transportation, recycling and reuse, composting where appropriate, safe disposal methods, environmental consequences of indiscriminate dumping and open burning, waste-related health risks, and available municipal waste management services. Household waste disposal practices will be assessed using indicators such as use of appropriate waste storage containers, waste segregation, utilization of approved collection services, recycling and reuse practices, avoidance of indiscriminate dumping, avoidance of open burning, proper disposal of household waste, and participation in community sanitation activities. Descriptive statistics will be used to summarize household sociodemographic characteristics, waste management knowledge, exposure to education, and waste disposal practices. Inferential statistical techniques, including chi-square tests, paired-sample tests, independent-sample tests, and multiple regression analysis, will be used to determine the influence of waste management education on household waste disposal practices. Appropriate diagnostic tests will also be conducted to assess the reliability of the research instrument, model assumptions, goodness of fit, and robustness of the findings. The study is expected to find that waste management education has a significant positive influence on household waste disposal practices in urban communities in Nigeria. Households exposed to structured waste management education are expected to demonstrate improved knowledge of the environmental and health consequences of poor waste disposal and greater adoption of appropriate waste management practices. Education may encourage proper waste storage, segregation, utilization of approved waste collection services, recycling and reuse, reduction of indiscriminate dumping, avoidance of open waste burning, and greater participation in community sanitation activities. However, education alone may not guarantee sustained improvement because households may continue to face barriers such as inadequate waste collection services, insufficient disposal facilities, irregular municipal collection, financial costs, overcrowding, limited recycling infrastructure, and poor enforcement of environmental regulations. Consequently, waste management education is expected to be most effective when supported by reliable waste collection services, accessible disposal facilities, recycling infrastructure, effective environmental regulation, and community participation. The study is expected to contribute to the literature on environmental health, waste management, sanitation, health education, urban health, and public health in Nigeria by providing empirical evidence on the influence of waste management education on household waste disposal practices in urban communities. The findings will provide useful information to the Federal Ministry of Environment, Federal Ministry of Health and Social Welfare, state environmental protection agencies, local government authorities, waste management agencies, environmental health officers, community health workers, development partners, and policymakers regarding strategies for improving household waste management. The study will also provide evidence-based recommendations for strengthening community-based waste management education, improving household access to reliable waste collection services, promoting waste segregation and recycling, strengthening enforcement of environmental regulations, improving disposal infrastructure, and encouraging sustainable household waste disposal practices across urban communities in Nigeria.
