Influence of Plastic Pollution Education on Plastic Waste Disposal Practices among University Students in Nigeria

Abstract

Plastic pollution is an increasing environmental and public health concern because the improper disposal of plastic materials can contribute to environmental degradation, blocked drainage systems, flooding, soil and water contamination, harm to wildlife, and other health and ecological risks. University students constitute an important population for environmental health interventions because their consumption and disposal behaviours may influence waste-generation patterns within educational institutions and surrounding communities. Plastic pollution education provides students with information about the environmental and health consequences of plastic waste, sources of plastic pollution, appropriate waste reduction strategies, reuse and recycling, proper segregation and disposal methods, and individual and collective responsibilities for reducing plastic pollution. Plastic waste disposal practices refer to the behaviours adopted by students in managing plastic materials after use, including appropriate disposal, waste separation, reuse, recycling, use of designated waste containers, avoidance of littering, and reduction of unnecessary single-use plastics. In Nigeria, inappropriate plastic waste disposal among university students may be associated with limited environmental awareness, convenience-driven consumption, inadequate waste-management facilities, limited recycling opportunities, irregular waste collection, and weak enforcement of environmental regulations. Effective plastic pollution education may improve students' understanding of plastic-related environmental risks and encourage appropriate plastic waste disposal practices. Against this background, this study investigates the influence of plastic pollution education on plastic waste disposal practices among university students in Nigeria. The study is anchored on the Health Belief Model, Social Cognitive Theory, and the Knowledge-Attitude-Practice framework. The Health Belief Model provides a framework for understanding students' adoption of appropriate plastic waste disposal practices through perceived susceptibility to environmental and health risks, perceived severity of plastic pollution, perceived benefits of proper waste disposal, perceived barriers, and cues to action. Social Cognitive Theory emphasizes the interaction between knowledge, self-efficacy, peer influence, observational learning, environmental conditions, and environmental behaviour. The Knowledge-Attitude-Practice framework provides a basis for examining how plastic pollution education may improve students' knowledge and attitudes and translate these improvements into appropriate plastic waste disposal practices. Collectively, these theoretical perspectives provide a suitable framework for explaining how plastic pollution education may influence plastic waste disposal practices among university students in Nigeria. The study will adopt a quantitative quasi-experimental research design. Primary data will be collected from undergraduate students in selected Nigerian universities using a structured self-administered questionnaire, plastic pollution knowledge assessment, and standardized plastic waste disposal practice checklist. A multistage sampling technique will be employed to select universities, faculties or departments, academic levels, and eligible students. Where feasible, selected student groups or university settings will be assigned to intervention and comparison groups. Students in the intervention group will receive structured plastic pollution education through lectures, interactive discussions, demonstrations, visual materials, and environmental-awareness activities. The education will cover sources and types of plastic pollution, environmental and public health consequences, plastic reduction strategies, reuse, recycling, waste segregation, appropriate disposal, the dangers of littering, and sustainable alternatives to single-use plastics. Plastic waste disposal practices will be assessed using indicators such as use of designated waste containers, separation of plastic waste, recycling, reuse of plastic materials, avoidance of littering, appropriate disposal of plastic bottles and packaging materials, participation in plastic collection activities, and reduction of unnecessary single-use plastic consumption. Where feasible, direct observation of waste-disposal behaviour and plastic waste around selected university settings will complement self-reported information. Descriptive statistics will be used to summarize students' sociodemographic characteristics, previous exposure to environmental education, plastic pollution knowledge, consumption patterns, and disposal practice scores. Inferential statistical techniques, including chi-square tests, paired-sample tests, independent-sample tests, and multiple regression analysis, will be used to determine the influence of plastic pollution education on plastic waste disposal practices. Where appropriate, disposal practices before and after the intervention will be compared. Diagnostic tests will also be conducted to assess the reliability of the research instruments, model assumptions, goodness of fit, and robustness of the findings. The study is expected to find that plastic pollution education has a significant positive influence on plastic waste disposal practices among university students in Nigeria. Students exposed to structured plastic pollution education are expected to demonstrate improved knowledge of the environmental and health consequences of plastic waste and greater adoption of appropriate disposal behaviours. Education is expected to encourage increased use of designated waste containers, plastic waste segregation, recycling and reuse, reduced littering, and more responsible management of plastic bottles, packaging, and other plastic materials. Practical environmental activities, including recycling demonstrations, campus clean-up exercises, and plastic collection initiatives, may strengthen students' ability to translate knowledge into sustainable waste-disposal behaviour. However, education alone may not guarantee sustained behavioural change because students may continue to face barriers such as inadequate waste-management infrastructure, limited recycling facilities, insufficient waste containers, irregular collection services, convenience-driven consumption, and weak enforcement of environmental regulations. Consequently, plastic pollution education may be most effective when supported by accessible recycling facilities, reliable waste-collection systems, adequate disposal infrastructure, campus environmental policies, and sustained environmental education. The study is expected to contribute to the literature on plastic pollution education, plastic waste disposal, environmental health, environmental education, university student behaviour, waste management, sustainability, recycling, and public health in Nigeria by providing empirical evidence on the influence of plastic pollution education on plastic waste disposal practices among university students. The findings will provide useful information to the Federal Ministry of Environment, Federal Ministry of Health and Social Welfare, Federal Ministry of Education, universities, state environmental protection agencies, local government authorities, waste-management organizations, recycling companies, environmental health officers, public health practitioners, health educators, development partners, and policymakers regarding strategies for reducing plastic pollution. The study will also provide evidence-based recommendations for integrating plastic pollution education into university environmental-health programmes, improving campus waste-management infrastructure, expanding recycling opportunities, strengthening plastic waste collection systems, encouraging reduction and reuse of plastic materials, and promoting sustainable plastic waste disposal practices among university students in Nigeria.
