Influence of Farm Safety Education on Occupational Injury Prevention Practices among Farmers in Nigeria
Abstract
Agricultural work is an important source of livelihood in Nigeria but is associated with various occupational hazards that may result in injuries, disabilities, and other adverse health outcomes. Farmers may be exposed to hazards arising from the use of farm machinery, hand tools, pesticides, livestock, sharp objects, heavy loads, falls, fire, extreme weather conditions, and unsafe working environments. Occupational injuries may negatively affect farmers' health, productivity, household income, and overall quality of life. Farm safety education provides farmers with information and practical skills relating to the identification of agricultural hazards, safe operation of farm machinery and tools, appropriate use of personal protective equipment, safe pesticide handling, manual handling techniques, livestock safety, fire prevention, first aid, emergency response, and other measures for reducing occupational risks. Occupational injury prevention practices refer to behaviours adopted by farmers to identify and reduce workplace hazards and prevent farm-related injuries, including appropriate use of protective equipment, safe handling of machinery and tools, adherence to safety procedures, appropriate pesticide handling, maintenance of farm equipment, safe lifting practices, environmental hazard control, and prompt response to occupational emergencies. In Nigeria, inadequate access to farm safety information, limited availability of protective equipment, financial constraints, traditional farming methods, insufficient occupational safety services, and weak enforcement of agricultural safety standards may affect farmers' adoption of appropriate injury prevention practices. Effective farm safety education may improve farmers' knowledge, risk perception, safety skills, and adoption of appropriate occupational injury prevention practices. Against this background, this study investigates the influence of farm safety education on occupational injury prevention practices among farmers in Nigeria. The study is anchored on the Health Belief Model, Social Cognitive Theory, and Knowledge-Attitude-Practice framework. The Health Belief Model explains preventive occupational health behaviour through perceived susceptibility, perceived severity, perceived benefits, perceived barriers, and cues to action, providing a basis for understanding farmers' adoption of injury prevention practices. Social Cognitive Theory emphasizes the interaction between knowledge, self-efficacy, social influences, behavioural capabilities, and environmental conditions in shaping occupational safety behaviour. The Knowledge-Attitude-Practice framework provides a basis for examining how improved knowledge and attitudes resulting from farm safety education may influence occupational injury prevention practices. Collectively, these theoretical perspectives provide a suitable framework for explaining how farm safety education may influence occupational injury prevention practices among farmers in Nigeria. The study will adopt a quantitative quasi-experimental research design. Primary data will be collected from farmers in selected agricultural communities in Nigeria using a structured interviewer-administered questionnaire and an observational farm safety checklist. A multistage sampling technique will be employed to select states, agricultural zones, local government areas, farming communities, farms, and eligible farmers. Where feasible, selected farmer groups or communities will be assigned to intervention and comparison groups. Farmers in the intervention group will receive structured farm safety education covering identification of farm hazards, safe use and maintenance of agricultural machinery and hand tools, appropriate use of personal protective equipment, pesticide safety, livestock handling, fire prevention, safe lifting and manual handling, prevention of falls and cuts, first aid, emergency response, and appropriate reporting of occupational injuries. Occupational injury prevention practices will be assessed using indicators such as use of appropriate protective equipment, safe operation of machinery and tools, equipment maintenance, safe pesticide handling, appropriate manual handling techniques, livestock safety, environmental hazard control, fire safety, first-aid preparedness, and adherence to recommended farm safety procedures. Descriptive statistics will be used to summarize farmers' sociodemographic and occupational characteristics, farm safety knowledge, exposure to education, and injury prevention practices. Inferential statistical techniques, including chi-square tests, paired-sample tests, independent-sample tests, and logistic or multiple regression analysis, will be used to determine the influence of farm safety education on occupational injury prevention practices. Appropriate diagnostic tests will also be conducted to assess the reliability of the research instrument, model assumptions, goodness of fit, and robustness of the findings. The study is expected to find that farm safety education has a significant positive influence on occupational injury prevention practices among farmers in Nigeria. Farmers exposed to structured farm safety education are expected to demonstrate improved knowledge of agricultural hazards and greater adoption of recommended safety practices. Education may improve farmers' ability to identify workplace hazards, encourage appropriate use of protective equipment, promote safer machinery and tool handling, strengthen pesticide safety practices, improve manual handling techniques, and increase preparedness for farm-related emergencies. However, education alone may not guarantee sustained safety practices because farmers may continue to face barriers such as limited financial resources, inadequate access to protective equipment, poorly maintained machinery, traditional farming practices, limited access to agricultural extension services, and challenging environmental conditions. Consequently, farm safety education is expected to be most effective when supported by affordable protective equipment, accessible agricultural extension services, appropriate equipment maintenance programmes, occupational safety supervision, practical demonstrations, and stronger agricultural safety policies. The study is expected to contribute to the literature on agricultural health, occupational safety, farm injuries, health education, workplace health, environmental health, and public health in Nigeria by providing empirical evidence on the influence of farm safety education on occupational injury prevention practices among farmers. The findings will provide useful information to the Federal Ministry of Agriculture and Food Security, Federal Ministry of Health and Social Welfare, agricultural extension services, state ministries of agriculture and health, farmers' associations, agricultural cooperatives, occupational health professionals, public health practitioners, development partners, and policymakers regarding strategies for reducing occupational injuries in the agricultural sector. The study will also provide evidence-based recommendations for integrating farm safety education into agricultural extension programmes, improving farmers' access to protective equipment, strengthening practical safety training, promoting safer machinery and pesticide practices, improving occupational injury reporting, and strengthening agricultural occupational health and safety programmes across Nigeria.
