Influence of Environmental Health Education on Safe Water Practices among Rural Households in Nigeria

Abstract

Access to safe water is an essential component of environmental health and disease prevention, yet many rural households in Nigeria continue to face challenges related to the availability, quality, storage, treatment, and safe use of household water. Consumption or use of contaminated water may increase the risk of waterborne diseases such as diarrhoeal diseases, cholera, typhoid fever, and other infections. Environmental health education provides households with information about water contamination, sources of unsafe water, household water treatment methods, safe water collection and transportation, hygienic storage, handling practices, and the health consequences of consuming contaminated water. Safe water practices refer to behaviours adopted by households to ensure that water used for drinking and other domestic purposes is collected, treated, stored, and handled safely. In rural Nigeria, inadequate environmental health knowledge, limited access to improved water sources, poverty, long distances to water points, inadequate water treatment facilities, poor storage conditions, and misconceptions about water safety may affect household water practices. Effective environmental health education may improve household knowledge and encourage the adoption of appropriate safe water practices. Against this background, this study investigates the influence of environmental health education on safe water practices among rural households in Nigeria. The study is anchored on the Health Belief Model, Social Cognitive Theory, and Knowledge-Attitude-Practice framework. The Health Belief Model explains preventive environmental health behaviour through perceived susceptibility, perceived severity, perceived benefits, perceived barriers, and cues to action, providing a basis for understanding households' decisions to adopt safe water practices. Social Cognitive Theory emphasizes the interaction between knowledge, self-efficacy, social influences, behavioural capabilities, and environmental conditions in shaping household health behaviour. The Knowledge-Attitude-Practice framework provides a basis for examining how improved knowledge and attitudes resulting from environmental health education may influence safe water practices. Collectively, these theoretical perspectives provide a suitable framework for explaining how environmental health education may influence safe water practices among rural households in Nigeria. The study will adopt a quantitative quasi-experimental research design. Primary data will be collected from household heads or responsible adult household members in selected rural communities in Nigeria using a structured interviewer-administered questionnaire and an observational household water-safety checklist. Where feasible, water samples may also be assessed using appropriate water-quality testing procedures. A multistage sampling technique will be employed to select states, local government areas, rural communities, households, and eligible respondents. Where feasible, selected communities or participant groups will be assigned to intervention and comparison groups. Households in the intervention group will receive structured environmental health education covering sources of water contamination, health risks associated with unsafe water, household water treatment methods such as boiling, filtration and appropriate chemical disinfection, safe water collection and transportation, hygienic storage, protection of water containers, safe water handling, and appropriate disposal of contaminated water. Safe water practices will be assessed using indicators such as use of improved water sources where available, household water treatment, safe water collection, hygienic transportation, covered storage containers, safe handling and dispensing, regular cleaning of water containers, and avoidance of contamination during storage and use. Descriptive statistics will be used to summarize household sociodemographic characteristics, environmental health knowledge, exposure to education, and safe water practices. Inferential statistical techniques, including chi-square tests, paired-sample tests, independent-sample tests, and multiple regression analysis, will be used to determine the influence of environmental health education on safe water practices. Appropriate diagnostic tests will also be conducted to assess the reliability of the research instrument, model assumptions, goodness of fit, and robustness of the findings. The study is expected to find that environmental health education has a significant positive influence on safe water practices among rural households in Nigeria. Households exposed to structured environmental health education are expected to demonstrate improved knowledge of water contamination and greater adoption of appropriate water safety behaviours. Education may encourage household water treatment, safe collection and transportation, hygienic storage, regular cleaning of water containers, and safer handling of drinking water. Where water-quality testing is incorporated, the intervention may also be associated with improvements in selected indicators of household water quality. However, education alone may not guarantee sustained safe water practices because households may continue to face structural barriers such as limited access to improved water sources, inadequate water infrastructure, financial constraints, long distances to water points, unreliable water supply, and limited availability of affordable water treatment options. Consequently, environmental health education is expected to be most effective when supported by improved rural water infrastructure, accessible water treatment technologies, reliable water supply systems, and community-based environmental health services. The study is expected to contribute to the literature on environmental health, water safety, rural health, health education, sanitation, waterborne disease prevention, and public health in Nigeria by providing empirical evidence on the influence of environmental health education on safe water practices among rural households. The findings will provide useful information to the Federal Ministry of Health and Social Welfare, Federal Ministry of Water Resources and Sanitation, National Primary Health Care Development Agency (NPHCDA), state ministries of health, rural water and sanitation agencies, local government authorities, environmental health officers, community health workers, development partners, and policymakers regarding strategies for improving household water safety. The study will also provide evidence-based recommendations for strengthening environmental health education, expanding access to improved water sources, promoting affordable household water treatment methods, improving safe water storage and handling, strengthening community-based water and sanitation programmes, and reducing the burden of waterborne diseases among rural households across Nigeria.
