Impact of Workplace Mental Health Awareness Programmes on Mental Health Help-Seeking among Young Employees in Nigeria
Abstract
Mental health challenges among young employees are an important workplace and public health concern in Nigeria. Young workers may experience occupational stress, heavy workloads, job insecurity, financial pressures, work-life imbalance, interpersonal conflicts, discrimination, and difficulties adapting to workplace demands, which may affect their psychological wellbeing and work performance. Despite the availability of mental health services, many young employees may be reluctant to seek professional assistance because of stigma, fear of discrimination, concerns about confidentiality, limited knowledge of available services, financial barriers, and perceptions that mental health difficulties should be managed privately. Workplace mental health awareness programmes provide an opportunity to educate employees about mental health conditions, warning signs, available support services, help-seeking options, and the importance of early intervention. Against this background, this study investigates the impact of workplace mental health awareness programmes on mental health help-seeking among young employees in Nigeria. The study will be anchored on the Health Belief Model, Social Cognitive Theory, and the Theory of Planned Behavior. The Health Belief Model explains how employees' perceptions of mental health problems, perceived severity, perceived benefits of seeking professional assistance, perceived barriers, and cues to action may influence help-seeking. Social Cognitive Theory emphasizes knowledge, self-efficacy, observational learning, behavioural skills, and workplace environmental influences in the development of health-related behaviours. The Theory of Planned Behavior explains how employees' attitudes, subjective norms, perceived behavioural control, and intentions may influence their willingness to seek mental health support. Collectively, these theoretical perspectives provide a suitable framework for explaining how workplace mental health awareness programmes may influence mental health help-seeking among young employees in Nigeria. The study will adopt a quantitative quasi-experimental or analytical cross-sectional research design. The study population will comprise young employees aged 18–35 years working in selected public and private organizations across Nigeria. A multistage sampling technique will be used to select states, organizations, industries, departments, and eligible employees. Workplace mental health awareness programmes will be measured using indicators such as availability of structured mental health education, frequency and duration of awareness activities, mental health literacy sessions, workplace campaigns, information about common mental health conditions, recognition of warning signs, stigma-reduction education, information about counselling and psychological services, employee assistance programmes, referral information, supervisor involvement, peer-support activities, and workplace mental health policies. Mental health help-seeking will be assessed using indicators such as willingness to seek professional assistance, intention to use counselling services, actual contact with mental health professionals, use of employee assistance programmes, acceptance of referrals, attendance at counselling sessions, use of community mental health services, disclosure to appropriate support persons, and timely help-seeking when experiencing significant psychological distress. Data will be collected using structured questionnaires, validated help-seeking instruments, workplace mental health awareness assessment tools, and relevant employee assistance or counselling utilization records where available. Where a quasi-experimental design is used, help-seeking attitudes, intentions, and behaviours will be assessed before and after exposure to the workplace mental health awareness programme. Descriptive statistics will be used to summarize employees' demographic and occupational characteristics, exposure to workplace mental health programmes, and patterns of mental health help-seeking. Inferential statistical techniques, including paired or independent sample tests, chi-square tests, correlation analysis, and logistic or multiple regression analysis where appropriate, will be used to determine the impact of workplace mental health awareness programmes on mental health help-seeking. Diagnostic tests will also be conducted to assess the reliability, validity, and robustness of the findings. The study is expected to find that workplace mental health awareness programmes have a significant positive impact on mental health help-seeking among young employees in Nigeria. Employees exposed to structured workplace mental health awareness programmes are expected to demonstrate greater knowledge of mental health conditions, increased willingness to seek professional assistance, stronger intentions to use available support services, and greater utilization of appropriate mental health resources compared with their baseline levels or employees without similar programme exposure. Mental health education, stigma-reduction activities, information about available services, peer-support initiatives, and employee assistance programmes may improve employees' confidence in seeking help and encourage earlier access to appropriate care. However, workplace stigma, fear of career consequences, concerns about confidentiality, limited availability of mental health professionals, financial constraints, inadequate employee assistance services, and unsupportive organizational cultures may reduce the effectiveness of awareness programmes. The study therefore expects accessible, confidential, evidence-based, and sustained workplace mental health awareness programmes to contribute significantly to improved mental health help-seeking among young employees in Nigeria. The study is expected to contribute to the literature on workplace mental health awareness programmes, mental health help-seeking, young employees, occupational mental health, employee wellbeing, mental health literacy, workplace health promotion, employee assistance programmes, health education, and public health in Nigeria. The findings will provide useful information to the Federal Ministry of Labour and Employment, Federal Ministry of Health and Social Welfare, employers, human resource departments, occupational health professionals, psychologists, psychiatrists, counsellors, employee assistance providers, labour organizations, development partners, and policymakers regarding strategies for improving workplace mental health. The study will also provide evidence-based recommendations for integrating mental health awareness into workplace health programmes, strengthening employee assistance and counselling services, protecting confidentiality, reducing workplace stigma and discrimination, training managers and supervisors to recognize mental health concerns, improving referral pathways, and developing sustainable workplace mental health initiatives for young employees across Nigeria.
