Impact of Trauma-Informed Care Training on Trauma-Informed Care Practices among Social Workers in Nigeria

Abstract

Trauma exposure is an important social and public health concern in Nigeria, where individuals and families may experience violence, displacement, abuse, accidents, conflict, disasters, bereavement, and other adverse events. Social workers frequently interact with individuals experiencing the effects of trauma in healthcare facilities, schools, communities, correctional settings, child protection services, and humanitarian programmes. However, inadequate knowledge and training in trauma-informed care may limit social workers' ability to recognize trauma-related needs, avoid practices that may retraumatize clients, provide appropriate support, and connect affected individuals with relevant services. Trauma-informed care training provides an opportunity to equip social workers with the knowledge and practical skills required to understand the effects of trauma, recognize trauma-related responses, promote safety and trust, support client choice and empowerment, and provide culturally responsive services. Against this background, this study investigates the impact of trauma-informed care training on trauma-informed care practices among social workers in Nigeria. The study will be anchored on the Social Ecological Model, Social Cognitive Theory, and Trauma-Informed Care Framework. The Social Ecological Model explains how individual, interpersonal, organizational, community, and broader societal factors influence the delivery of trauma-informed services. Social Cognitive Theory emphasizes the roles of knowledge, self-efficacy, observational learning, behavioural skills, and organizational environment in the adoption of trauma-informed care practices. The Trauma-Informed Care Framework emphasizes principles including safety, trustworthiness, peer support, collaboration, empowerment, voice and choice, and cultural and gender responsiveness in service delivery. Collectively, these theoretical perspectives provide a suitable framework for explaining how trauma-informed care training may influence trauma-informed care practices among social workers in Nigeria. The study will adopt a quantitative quasi-experimental or analytical cross-sectional research design. The study population will comprise professional social workers employed in selected public and private organizations, healthcare facilities, schools, community-based organizations, child protection services, humanitarian agencies, and social welfare institutions across Nigeria. A multistage sampling technique will be used to select states, organizations, institutions, departments, and eligible social workers. Trauma-informed care training will be measured using indicators such as exposure to structured training, training frequency and duration, understanding of trauma and its effects, recognition of trauma-related responses, principles of trauma-informed care, trauma-sensitive communication, active listening, safety assessment, trust-building, client empowerment, shared decision-making, cultural sensitivity, confidentiality, prevention of retraumatization, referral procedures, self-care, supervision, and access to training materials. Trauma-informed care practices will be assessed using indicators such as creating safe service environments, respectful communication, active listening, building trust, promoting client choice, involving clients in decision-making, recognizing trauma-related needs, avoiding retraumatization, maintaining confidentiality, culturally responsive practice, appropriate referral, collaborative service delivery, empowerment-oriented interventions, professional boundaries, and reflective practice. Data will be collected using structured questionnaires, professional practice records where available, and appropriately validated trauma-informed care knowledge and practice instruments administered before and after the training intervention where a quasi-experimental design is used. Descriptive statistics will be used to summarize social workers' demographic and professional characteristics, exposure to trauma-informed care training, and trauma-informed care practices. Inferential statistical techniques, including paired or independent sample tests, chi-square tests, correlation analysis, and logistic or multiple regression analysis where appropriate, will be used to determine the impact of trauma-informed care training on trauma-informed care practices. Diagnostic tests will also be conducted to assess the reliability, validity, and robustness of the findings. The study is expected to find that trauma-informed care training has a significant positive impact on trauma-informed care practices among social workers in Nigeria. Social workers exposed to structured trauma-informed care training are expected to demonstrate greater adoption of trauma-sensitive practices than social workers without similar training or compared with their baseline practices. Training may improve social workers' ability to recognize trauma-related responses, establish safe and trusting relationships, communicate respectfully, promote client choice and empowerment, involve clients in decision-making, avoid retraumatization, maintain confidentiality, provide culturally responsive services, and facilitate appropriate referrals. Practical case studies, role-playing, reflective exercises, and supervised practice may strengthen the application of trauma-informed principles in real-world service settings. However, high caseloads, limited organizational resources, inadequate supervision, insufficient staffing, lack of specialized referral services, workplace stress, and limited opportunities for refresher training may reduce social workers' ability to consistently apply trauma-informed care practices. The study therefore expects structured, practical, culturally appropriate, and sustained trauma-informed care training, supported by appropriate organizational resources, to contribute significantly to improved trauma-informed care practices among social workers in Nigeria. The study is expected to contribute to the literature on trauma-informed care training, trauma-informed care practices, social work practice, psychosocial support, mental health, child protection, humanitarian services, occupational development, and public health in Nigeria. The findings will provide useful information to the Federal Ministry of Humanitarian Affairs and Poverty Reduction, Federal Ministry of Health and Social Welfare, state ministries responsible for social welfare and health, social work organizations, healthcare institutions, schools, child protection agencies, humanitarian organizations, professional social work bodies, development partners, and policymakers regarding strategies for strengthening trauma-responsive services. The study will also provide evidence-based recommendations for integrating trauma-informed care training into social work education and continuing professional development, strengthening organizational supervision, improving referral systems, developing trauma-sensitive service protocols, promoting practitioner self-care, increasing access to refresher training, and establishing sustainable trauma-informed care practices across social and health service organizations in Nigeria.
