Impact of Swimming and Water-Safety Education on Drowning Prevention Knowledge among Secondary School Students in Nigeria
Abstract
Drowning is an important public health and injury-prevention concern among children and adolescents and may occur in swimming pools, rivers, lakes, ponds, wells, drainage channels, and other bodies of water. Secondary school students may be exposed to drowning risks through recreational swimming, transportation across waterways, domestic activities, and other forms of contact with water. Limited swimming ability, inadequate knowledge of water hazards, poor understanding of rescue procedures, unsafe behaviour around water, and limited access to swimming and water-safety education may increase the risk of drowning incidents. Swimming and water-safety education provides an opportunity to equip students with knowledge and practical skills for recognizing water-related hazards, preventing risky behaviour, responding appropriately to emergencies, and seeking assistance when necessary. Against this background, this study investigates the impact of swimming and water-safety education on drowning prevention knowledge among secondary school students in Nigeria. The study will be anchored on the Health Belief Model, Social Cognitive Theory, and Protection Motivation Theory. The Health Belief Model explains how students' perceptions of their susceptibility to drowning, perceived severity of drowning, perceived benefits of water-safety behaviours, perceived barriers, and cues to action may influence their acquisition of drowning prevention knowledge. Social Cognitive Theory emphasizes observational learning, practical skills, self-efficacy, behavioural reinforcement, and environmental influences in developing safe water-related behaviours. Protection Motivation Theory explains how perceptions of drowning threats, response effectiveness, response costs, and confidence in performing protective actions may influence students' motivation to adopt water-safety practices. Collectively, these theoretical perspectives provide a suitable framework for explaining how swimming and water-safety education may influence drowning prevention knowledge among secondary school students in Nigeria. The study will adopt a quantitative quasi-experimental or analytical cross-sectional research design. The study population will comprise students enrolled in selected public and private secondary schools across Nigeria. A multistage sampling technique will be used to select geopolitical zones, states, local government areas, schools, classes, and eligible students. Swimming and water-safety education will be assessed using indicators such as exposure to structured swimming education, swimming instruction, water hazard identification, safe entry and exit from water, recognition of unsafe swimming environments, use of appropriate flotation devices, supervision requirements, avoidance of risky water-related behaviours, emergency communication, basic rescue principles, and appropriate actions when a person is in distress in water. Drowning prevention knowledge will be assessed using indicators such as identification of drowning risk factors, recognition of dangerous water conditions, understanding of supervision and buddy systems, knowledge of safe swimming practices, use of appropriate flotation devices, understanding of basic rescue and emergency procedures, knowledge of emergency contact procedures, and appropriate actions when encountering a person in water distress. Practical swimming skills may be assessed separately using standardized competency checklists where appropriate, without substituting swimming ability for knowledge assessment. Data will be collected using structured questionnaires, validated water-safety knowledge instruments, practical demonstrations, swimming education attendance records, school health records, and relevant programme documents. Descriptive statistics will be used to summarize participants' characteristics, exposure to swimming and water-safety education, and drowning prevention knowledge scores. Inferential statistical techniques, including chi-square tests, t-tests, correlation analysis, and logistic or multiple regression analysis where appropriate, will be used to determine the impact of swimming and water-safety education on drowning prevention knowledge. Where a quasi-experimental design is adopted, knowledge scores before and after the educational intervention may be compared to determine changes associated with the programme. Diagnostic tests will also be conducted to assess the reliability, validity, and robustness of the findings. The study is expected to find that swimming and water-safety education has a significant positive impact on drowning prevention knowledge among secondary school students in Nigeria. Students exposed to structured and practical water-safety education are expected to demonstrate improved understanding of drowning risk factors, unsafe water environments, appropriate supervision, safe swimming behaviours, flotation-device use, emergency communication, and appropriate responses to water-related emergencies. Practical demonstrations, supervised swimming instruction, scenario-based learning, and repeated safety messages may strengthen students' understanding and confidence in applying water-safety principles. Education may also correct misconceptions about attempting dangerous rescues and encourage students to seek assistance from trained rescuers or emergency services when appropriate. However, limited access to swimming facilities, inadequate availability of trained swimming instructors, financial barriers, cultural perceptions, insufficient school resources, and limited exposure to safe swimming environments may affect implementation. The study therefore expects accessible, age-appropriate, practical, and regularly reinforced swimming and water-safety education to contribute significantly to improved drowning prevention knowledge among secondary school students in Nigeria. The study is expected to contribute to the literature on swimming education, water safety, drowning prevention, injury prevention, school health education, adolescent health, health promotion, and public health in Nigeria. The findings will provide useful information to the Federal Ministry of Health and Social Welfare, Federal Ministry of Education, state ministries of health and education, school management authorities, National Primary Health Care Development Agency, water-safety organizations, swimming associations, emergency response agencies, teachers, parents, community organizations, and policymakers regarding strategies for reducing drowning risks among school-aged children and adolescents. The study will also provide evidence-based recommendations for incorporating age-appropriate water-safety education into school health programmes, improving access to trained swimming and water-safety instructors, strengthening emergency and rescue education, promoting safe supervision around water, developing school-based drowning prevention programmes, and improving community awareness of water-related hazards across Nigeria.
