Impact of Recreational Facility Safety Education on Injury-Prevention Practices among University Students in Nigeria
Abstract
Recreational activities provide university students with opportunities for physical exercise, relaxation, social interaction, and improved wellbeing. However, unsafe use of recreational facilities such as sports fields, gyms, swimming pools, fitness centres, courts, and other recreational spaces may expose students to preventable injuries. Inadequate awareness of facility rules, improper use of equipment, failure to use protective equipment, unsafe exercise techniques, inadequate warm-up, risky behaviour, and failure to recognize environmental hazards may increase the likelihood of injuries among university students. Recreational facility safety education provides an opportunity to improve students' understanding of facility safety requirements and promote behaviours that reduce the risk of recreational injuries. Against this background, this study investigates the impact of recreational facility safety education on injury-prevention practices among university students in Nigeria. The study will be anchored on the Health Belief Model, Social Cognitive Theory, and Social Ecological Model. The Health Belief Model explains how students' perceptions of susceptibility to recreational injuries, perceived severity of injuries, perceived benefits of safety practices, perceived barriers, self-efficacy, and cues to action may influence injury-prevention practices. Social Cognitive Theory emphasizes observational learning, behavioural modelling, self-efficacy, reinforcement, peer influence, and social support in shaping safe recreational behaviour. The Social Ecological Model emphasizes the influence of individual, interpersonal, institutional, facility, environmental, and socioeconomic factors on injury-prevention practices. Collectively, these theoretical perspectives provide a suitable framework for explaining how recreational facility safety education may influence injury-prevention practices among university students in Nigeria. The study will adopt a quantitative quasi-experimental or analytical cross-sectional research design. The study population will comprise undergraduate and postgraduate students aged 18 years and above who use selected recreational facilities in public and private universities across Nigeria. A multistage sampling technique will be used to select geopolitical zones, states, universities, faculties or departments, recreational facilities, and eligible students. Recreational facility safety education will be assessed using indicators such as exposure to safety education sessions, frequency and duration of education, information on facility rules, appropriate equipment use, protective equipment, warm-up and cool-down practices, safe exercise techniques, recognition of environmental hazards, appropriate supervision, emergency procedures, first-aid availability, reporting of unsafe equipment, and appropriate responses to recreational injuries. Injury-prevention practices will be assessed using indicators such as compliance with facility rules, appropriate use of exercise and recreational equipment, use of protective equipment where required, proper warm-up and cool-down, safe exercise techniques, avoidance of dangerous behaviour, recognition and reporting of hazards, appropriate response to pain or injury, use of available safety equipment, adherence to supervision requirements, and appropriate first-aid or emergency-response practices. Data will be collected using structured questionnaires, standardized injury-prevention assessment tools, recreational facility observation checklists, scenario-based questions, facility safety records where available, and pre-test and post-test assessments where a quasi-experimental intervention is adopted. Descriptive statistics will be used to summarize students' demographic and academic characteristics, recreational activities, frequency of facility use, previous injury experiences, sources of safety information, exposure to safety education, and injury-prevention practices. Inferential statistical techniques, including chi-square tests, paired and independent t-tests, correlation analysis, and logistic or multiple regression analysis where appropriate, will be used to determine the impact of recreational facility safety education on injury-prevention practices. Where a quasi-experimental design is adopted, injury-prevention practice scores before and after the educational intervention may be compared with those of a comparison group to determine changes associated with the intervention. Diagnostic tests will also be conducted to assess the reliability, validity, and robustness of the findings. The study is expected to find that recreational facility safety education has a significant positive impact on injury-prevention practices among university students in Nigeria. Students exposed to structured, practical, and sustained safety education are expected to demonstrate better injury-prevention practices than students without comparable exposure. Education may improve students' understanding of facility rules, safe equipment use, protective measures, warm-up and cool-down practices, recognition of environmental hazards, and appropriate emergency responses. Practical demonstrations may strengthen students' confidence and ability to use recreational equipment safely and recognize situations that could result in injury. Safety education may also encourage students to report damaged equipment and unsafe facility conditions to relevant authorities. However, overcrowded facilities, inadequate supervision, poorly maintained equipment, limited safety signage, lack of protective equipment, peer influence, overconfidence, and weak enforcement of facility rules may reduce the effectiveness of education alone. The study therefore expects accessible, practical, facility-specific, and sustained recreational safety education, supported by well-maintained facilities and effective supervision, to contribute significantly to improved injury-prevention practices among university students in Nigeria. The study is expected to contribute to the literature on recreational facility safety, injury prevention, university student health, sports safety, physical activity, health education, environmental health, emergency preparedness, and public health in Nigeria. The findings will provide useful information to the Federal Ministry of Health and Social Welfare, Federal Ministry of Education, universities, university sports departments, recreational facility managers, healthcare professionals, physiotherapists, sports personnel, public health practitioners, student organizations, development partners, and policymakers regarding strategies for reducing recreational injuries among young adults. The study will also provide evidence-based recommendations for strengthening recreational facility safety education, improving safety signage and supervision, ensuring regular equipment inspection and maintenance, providing appropriate protective and emergency equipment, strengthening first-aid preparedness, and developing sustainable university-based recreational safety programmes that promote injury-prevention practices among students across Nigeria.
