Impact of Mental Health Awareness Campaigns on Mental Health Service Utilization among Young Adults in Nigeria

Abstract

Mental health problems constitute an important public health concern among young adults in Nigeria, with conditions such as depression, anxiety, psychological distress, substance-use problems, and other mental health difficulties potentially affecting education, employment, relationships, productivity, and quality of life. Despite the availability of mental health services, many young adults may not seek professional assistance because of inadequate awareness of available services, stigma, misconceptions about mental illness, concerns about confidentiality, financial constraints, limited service availability, and reliance on informal sources of support. Mental health awareness campaigns provide an opportunity to improve knowledge about mental health conditions, increase awareness of available services, reduce misconceptions and stigma, encourage early help-seeking, and promote appropriate utilization of professional mental health support. Against this background, this study investigates the impact of mental health awareness campaigns on mental health service utilization among young adults in Nigeria. The study will be anchored on the Health Belief Model, Theory of Planned Behavior, and Social Ecological Model. The Health Belief Model explains how young adults' perceptions of susceptibility to mental health problems, perceived severity, perceived benefits of seeking professional care, perceived barriers, and cues to action may influence their decisions to utilize mental health services. The Theory of Planned Behavior emphasizes the influence of attitudes toward mental health services, subjective norms, perceived behavioural control, and behavioural intentions on service-utilization behaviour. The Social Ecological Model recognizes the influence of individual, interpersonal, community, cultural, socioeconomic, and healthcare-system factors on mental health service access and utilization. Collectively, these theoretical perspectives provide a suitable framework for explaining how mental health awareness campaigns may influence mental health service utilization among young adults in Nigeria. The study will adopt a quantitative quasi-experimental or analytical cross-sectional research design. The study population will comprise young adults aged approximately 18 to 35 years residing in selected communities, tertiary institutions, workplaces, and youth settings across Nigeria. A multistage sampling technique will be used to select states, local government areas, communities, institutions, workplaces, youth organizations, and eligible participants. Mental health awareness campaigns will be measured using indicators such as exposure to campaign messages, campaign frequency, campaign duration, communication channels, campaign reach, knowledge of mental health conditions, awareness of mental health symptoms and warning signs, information about available mental health services, stigma-reduction messages, information on help-seeking, crisis-awareness messages, message clarity, and accessibility of campaign materials. Mental health service utilization will be assessed using indicators such as awareness and use of mental health services, visits to mental health professionals, utilization of counselling services, psychological assessment, psychiatric consultation, participation in support programmes, appropriate referrals, follow-up attendance, and utilization of community-based or primary healthcare mental health services where available. Data will be collected using structured questionnaires, validated mental health literacy and service-utilization instruments, participant interviews, and relevant service records where accessible and ethically appropriate. Descriptive statistics will be used to summarize participants' demographic characteristics, exposure to mental health awareness campaigns, mental health knowledge, attitudes toward mental health services, and service-utilization patterns. Inferential statistical techniques, including chi-square tests, correlation analysis, and logistic or multiple regression analysis, will be used to determine the impact of mental health awareness campaigns on mental health service utilization. Where a quasi-experimental design is employed, service-utilization patterns before and after exposure to the awareness campaign may be compared to determine changes associated with the intervention. Diagnostic tests will also be conducted to assess the reliability, validity, and robustness of the findings. The study is expected to find that mental health awareness campaigns have a significant positive impact on mental health service utilization among young adults in Nigeria. Young adults exposed to structured and sustained mental health awareness campaigns are expected to demonstrate greater awareness of available mental health services and a higher likelihood of utilizing appropriate professional support than those with limited or no exposure. Awareness campaigns may improve recognition of mental health problems, reduce misconceptions, address stigma, provide information about where and how to obtain care, and encourage early help-seeking. Campaigns delivered through social media, educational institutions, workplaces, community organizations, healthcare facilities, and other accessible platforms may increase the reach of mental health information among young adults. Increased awareness may encourage individuals experiencing mental health difficulties to seek counselling, psychological assessment, psychiatric care, or other appropriate professional services. However, high service costs, limited availability of mental health professionals, stigma, confidentiality concerns, long waiting times, inadequate service coverage, cultural beliefs, and negative attitudes toward mental healthcare may limit the translation of increased awareness into actual service utilization. The study therefore expects sustained, accessible, culturally appropriate, and service-linked mental health awareness campaigns to contribute significantly to improved utilization of mental health services among young adults in Nigeria. The study is expected to contribute to the literature on mental health awareness campaigns, mental health service utilization, young adults' mental health, mental health literacy, help-seeking behaviour, stigma reduction, community mental health, and public health in Nigeria. The findings will provide useful information to the Federal Ministry of Health and Social Welfare, state ministries of health, National Primary Health Care Development Agency, mental health institutions, tertiary institutions, workplaces, youth organizations, mental health professionals, community health workers, non-governmental organizations, development partners, and policymakers regarding strategies for improving access to and utilization of mental health services. The study will also provide evidence-based recommendations for strengthening mental health awareness campaigns, improving public knowledge of available mental health services, linking awareness campaigns with accessible care pathways, reducing stigma, expanding community-based mental health services, improving affordability and confidentiality of care, strengthening referral systems, and integrating sustained mental health promotion into appropriate youth, community, educational, workplace, and primary healthcare programmes across Nigeria.
