Impact of Autism Awareness Programmes on Early Recognition of Autism Signs among Primary School Teachers in Nigeria

Abstract

Autism spectrum disorder (ASD) is a neurodevelopmental condition that may affect communication, social interaction, behaviour, sensory processing, and learning. Early recognition of autism signs is important because timely developmental assessment, appropriate intervention, educational support, and family guidance may improve opportunities for children to achieve better developmental and functional outcomes. Primary school teachers are often in a position to observe children's communication, social interaction, classroom behaviour, learning patterns, and responses to sensory stimuli over extended periods. However, limited awareness of autism signs, misconceptions about autism, inadequate teacher training, stigma, and difficulty distinguishing developmental differences from behavioural problems may delay recognition and referral. Autism awareness programmes provide an opportunity to improve teachers' understanding of autism and their ability to recognize early developmental signs within the school environment. Against this background, this study investigates the impact of autism awareness programmes on early recognition of autism signs among primary school teachers in Nigeria. The study will be anchored on the Health Belief Model, Social Cognitive Theory, and Social Ecological Model. The Health Belief Model explains how teachers' perceptions of the importance and severity of developmental difficulties, perceived benefits of early recognition, perceived barriers, self-efficacy, and cues to action may influence their ability to identify children who may require further developmental assessment. Social Cognitive Theory emphasizes observational learning, practical training, behavioural modelling, self-efficacy, reinforcement, and professional support in developing teachers' recognition skills. The Social Ecological Model highlights the influence of individual teacher characteristics, school environments, parents, healthcare professionals, educational policies, community attitudes, and broader social factors on recognition and referral of children with developmental concerns. Collectively, these theoretical perspectives provide a suitable framework for explaining how autism awareness programmes may influence early recognition of autism signs among primary school teachers in Nigeria. The study will adopt a quantitative quasi-experimental or analytical cross-sectional research design. The study population will comprise teachers working with primary school pupils in selected public and private primary schools across Nigeria. A multistage sampling technique will be used to select geopolitical zones, states, local government areas, communities, schools, and eligible teachers. Autism awareness programmes will be assessed using indicators such as exposure to autism education sessions, frequency and duration of training, information on autism characteristics, social-communication difficulties, restricted or repetitive behaviours, sensory differences, developmental milestones, early warning signs, common misconceptions, inclusive classroom practices, communication with parents, referral procedures, and available developmental and educational support services. Early recognition of autism signs will be assessed using indicators such as teachers' ability to identify social-communication differences, limited eye contact or social responsiveness, delayed or unusual communication patterns, difficulties with peer interaction, repetitive behaviours, restricted interests, unusual sensory responses, insistence on routines, developmental concerns, and classroom behaviours that may warrant further professional assessment. Data will be collected using structured questionnaires, standardized autism-awareness and recognition assessment tools, case vignettes or classroom-based scenarios, teacher training records where available, and pre-test and post-test assessments where a quasi-experimental intervention is adopted. Descriptive statistics will be used to summarize teachers' demographic and professional characteristics, previous autism training, sources of information, awareness levels, and autism-sign recognition scores. Inferential statistical techniques, including chi-square tests, paired and independent t-tests, correlation analysis, and logistic or multiple regression analysis where appropriate, will be used to determine the impact of autism awareness programmes on early recognition of autism signs. Where a quasi-experimental design is adopted, recognition scores before and after the awareness programme may be compared with those of a comparison group to determine changes associated with the intervention. Diagnostic tests will also be conducted to assess the reliability, validity, and robustness of the findings. The study is expected to find that autism awareness programmes have a significant positive impact on early recognition of autism signs among primary school teachers in Nigeria. Teachers exposed to structured, evidence-based, practical, and contextually appropriate autism awareness programmes are expected to demonstrate greater ability to identify developmental characteristics associated with autism than teachers without comparable training. Education may improve teachers' understanding of social-communication differences, repetitive behaviours, restricted interests, sensory differences, developmental concerns, and classroom indicators that may warrant further assessment. Practical training using case scenarios, classroom examples, videos, and interactive demonstrations may improve teachers' confidence and ability to distinguish potential autism signs from intentional misbehaviour or ordinary differences in children's development. Improved recognition may facilitate appropriate communication with parents and timely referral for professional developmental assessment. However, limited access to specialist services, inadequate teacher-training resources, stigma, cultural misconceptions, large classroom sizes, limited school-health support, and weak referral systems may reduce the effectiveness of awareness programmes alone. The study therefore expects accessible, practical, sustained, and school-based autism awareness programmes, supported by effective referral pathways and specialist services, to contribute significantly to improved early recognition of autism signs among primary school teachers in Nigeria. The study is expected to contribute to the literature on autism spectrum disorder, developmental screening, early recognition, teacher education, inclusive education, child development, neurodevelopmental health, school health services, health education, and public health in Nigeria. The findings will provide useful information to the Federal Ministry of Health and Social Welfare, Federal Ministry of Education, National Primary Health Care Development Agency, state ministries of health and education, primary schools, teachers, school health personnel, paediatricians, psychologists, speech and language professionals, developmental specialists, parent organizations, development partners, and policymakers regarding strategies for strengthening early recognition of developmental concerns. The study will also provide evidence-based recommendations for integrating autism awareness into teacher-training and continuing professional development programmes, strengthening school-based developmental recognition and referral systems, improving collaboration between teachers, parents, and healthcare professionals, reducing stigma and misconceptions surrounding autism, increasing access to developmental assessment services, and developing sustainable inclusive school-health programmes that support early recognition and appropriate intervention for children with autism across Nigeria.
