Impact of Air Pollution Education on Air-Pollution Prevention Practices among Urban Residents in Nigeria
Abstract
Air pollution is an important environmental and public health concern in urban areas of Nigeria, where residents may be exposed to pollutants from traffic emissions, industrial activities, electricity generators, open burning of waste, household energy use, construction activities, and other sources. Prolonged exposure to polluted air may increase the risk of respiratory and cardiovascular problems and may contribute to other adverse health outcomes. Air pollution education provides urban residents with information about major sources of air pollution, health effects associated with exposure, individual and household risk-reduction measures, indoor and outdoor air-quality protection, avoidance of unnecessary exposure to smoke and other pollutants, appropriate waste-management practices, and actions that can contribute to improved community air quality. Air-pollution prevention practices refer to the actions undertaken by residents to reduce personal exposure to air pollutants and minimize activities that contribute to air pollution. In Nigerian urban communities, inadequate air-pollution prevention practices may be associated with limited awareness of pollution sources and health risks, misconceptions about air quality, dependence on polluting energy sources, open burning of waste, traffic-related exposure, and limited access to reliable environmental health information. Effective air pollution education may improve residents' knowledge, risk perception, and adoption of appropriate preventive practices. Against this background, this study investigates the impact of air pollution education on air-pollution prevention practices among urban residents in Nigeria. The study is anchored on the Health Belief Model, Social Cognitive Theory, and the Knowledge-Attitude-Practice framework. The Health Belief Model provides a framework for understanding residents' air-pollution prevention decisions through perceived susceptibility to pollution-related health problems, perceived severity, perceived benefits of preventive practices, perceived barriers, and cues to action. Social Cognitive Theory emphasizes the interaction between knowledge, self-efficacy, social influences, environmental conditions, and behaviour in shaping environmental health practices. The Knowledge-Attitude-Practice framework provides a basis for examining how air pollution education may improve residents' knowledge and attitudes and influence preventive practices. Collectively, these theoretical perspectives provide a suitable framework for explaining how air pollution education may influence air-pollution prevention practices among urban residents in Nigeria. The study will adopt a quantitative quasi-experimental research design. Primary data will be collected from adult residents in selected urban communities in Nigeria using a structured interviewer-administered questionnaire, air pollution knowledge assessment, and air-pollution prevention-practice checklist. A multistage sampling technique will be employed to select states, urban local government areas, communities, households, and eligible residents. Where feasible, selected communities or participant groups will be assigned to intervention and comparison groups. Residents in the intervention group will receive structured air pollution education covering major sources of air pollution, health effects of exposure, traffic-related pollution, smoke and generator emissions, open burning, indoor air pollution, household ventilation, personal exposure reduction, waste-management practices, and community-level pollution prevention. Air-pollution prevention practices will be assessed using indicators such as avoidance of unnecessary exposure to smoke, reduction of exposure to traffic emissions, appropriate household ventilation, avoidance of open waste burning, safer cooking and energy practices, proper waste disposal, use of appropriate protective measures during high-pollution activities, and participation in community environmental protection activities. Where feasible, self-reported practices will be complemented by observation of household and community environmental conditions. Descriptive statistics will be used to summarize participants' sociodemographic characteristics, previous exposure to environmental health education, air pollution knowledge, sources of exposure, and prevention-practice scores. Inferential statistical techniques, including chi-square tests, paired-sample tests, independent-sample tests, and multiple regression analysis, will be used to determine the impact of air pollution education on air-pollution prevention practices. Where appropriate, prevention practices before and after the intervention will be compared. Diagnostic tests will also be conducted to assess the reliability of the research instruments, model assumptions, goodness of fit, and robustness of the findings. The study is expected to find that air pollution education has a significant positive impact on air-pollution prevention practices among urban residents in Nigeria. Residents exposed to structured air pollution education are expected to demonstrate improved knowledge of major pollution sources, exposure pathways, health effects, and appropriate risk-reduction measures. Education may encourage residents to reduce unnecessary exposure to traffic emissions and smoke, avoid open burning of waste, improve household ventilation, adopt safer cooking and energy practices, and participate in environmentally responsible activities. Practical demonstrations and community-based environmental health education are expected to strengthen residents' ability to translate knowledge into daily preventive practices. However, education alone may not eliminate exposure because urban residents may continue to face structural challenges such as traffic congestion, industrial emissions, generator use, inadequate waste-management systems, poor urban planning, limited access to cleaner energy, and weak environmental enforcement. Consequently, air pollution education is expected to be most effective when supported by improved environmental regulations, reliable public infrastructure, cleaner energy alternatives, effective waste-management systems, urban planning, air-quality monitoring, and community participation. The study is expected to contribute to the literature on air pollution, environmental health education, urban health, pollution prevention, community health, health promotion, and public health in Nigeria by providing empirical evidence on the impact of air pollution education on air-pollution prevention practices among urban residents. The findings will provide useful information to the Federal Ministry of Health and Social Welfare, Federal Ministry of Environment, state ministries of health and environment, local government authorities, environmental protection agencies, urban planning authorities, public health practitioners, community health workers, environmental health officers, development partners, and policymakers regarding strategies for reducing population exposure to air pollution. The study will also provide evidence-based recommendations for strengthening community-based air pollution education, improving public awareness of pollution-related health risks, promoting cleaner household energy practices, discouraging open waste burning, strengthening environmental health campaigns, improving air-quality monitoring and public reporting, and promoting coordinated environmental and public health interventions in Nigerian cities.
