Impact of Air-Pollution Awareness Campaigns on Protective Practices among Residents of High-Traffic Urban Communities in Nigeria

Abstract

Air pollution is an important environmental and public health concern in Nigeria, particularly in densely populated urban communities characterized by heavy traffic, vehicle emissions, road dust, industrial activities, and other sources of ambient air pollution. Residents living or working near major roads may experience prolonged exposure to pollutants that can contribute to respiratory and cardiovascular health problems, particularly among vulnerable individuals. Despite these risks, awareness of air-pollution sources, health effects, exposure-reduction measures, and available air-quality information may be limited among urban residents. Air-pollution awareness campaigns provide an opportunity to improve public understanding of pollution risks and promote practical measures for reducing personal exposure. Against this background, this study investigates the impact of air-pollution awareness campaigns on protective practices among residents of high-traffic urban communities in Nigeria. The study will be anchored on the Health Belief Model, Social Ecological Model, and Protection Motivation Theory. The Health Belief Model explains how residents' perceptions of susceptibility to air-pollution-related health problems, perceived severity, perceived benefits of protective behaviours, perceived barriers, and cues to action may influence adoption of protective practices. The Social Ecological Model emphasizes the influence of individual, household, community, environmental, transportation, and policy factors on exposure to air pollution and adoption of protective behaviours. Protection Motivation Theory explains how perceived threat, response efficacy, self-efficacy, and perceived response costs may influence residents' motivation to adopt measures for reducing exposure. Collectively, these theoretical perspectives provide a suitable framework for explaining how air-pollution awareness campaigns may influence protective practices among residents of high-traffic urban communities in Nigeria. The study will adopt a quantitative quasi-experimental or analytical cross-sectional research design. The study population will comprise adults aged 18 years and above residing in selected high-traffic urban communities across Nigeria. A multistage sampling technique will be used to select geopolitical zones, states, urban centres, local government areas, high-traffic communities, neighbourhoods, households, and eligible residents. Air-pollution awareness campaigns will be assessed using indicators such as exposure to campaign messages, frequency and duration of campaigns, information on traffic-related air pollution, health effects of air pollution, identification of major pollution sources, air-quality information, exposure-reduction strategies, use of public health messages, community meetings, radio and television programmes, social-media campaigns, environmental health outreach, and involvement of community leaders. Protective practices will be assessed using indicators such as reducing unnecessary exposure to heavy traffic, avoiding prolonged outdoor activities during periods of visibly high pollution where feasible, improving indoor ventilation appropriately, reducing exposure to vehicle exhaust, using appropriate respiratory protection in relevant high-exposure situations, keeping windows or doors appropriately managed according to outdoor air conditions, maintaining clean indoor environments, monitoring available air-quality information, reducing exposure of children and vulnerable household members, and seeking appropriate healthcare when pollution-related symptoms occur. Data will be collected using structured questionnaires, standardized air-pollution knowledge and protective-practice assessment tools, community observation checklists, available environmental monitoring information, and relevant public health programme documents. Descriptive statistics will be used to summarize residents' characteristics, exposure patterns, sources of air-pollution information, awareness levels, and protective practices. Inferential statistical techniques, including chi-square tests, t-tests, correlation analysis, and logistic or multiple regression analysis where appropriate, will be used to determine the impact of air-pollution awareness campaigns on protective practices. Where a quasi-experimental design is adopted, protective-practice scores before and after implementation of the awareness campaign may be compared with those of a comparison community or group to determine changes associated with the intervention. Diagnostic tests will also be conducted to assess the reliability, validity, and robustness of the findings. The study is expected to find that air-pollution awareness campaigns have a significant positive impact on protective practices among residents of high-traffic urban communities in Nigeria. Residents exposed to structured and credible air-pollution awareness campaigns are expected to demonstrate greater adoption of measures for reducing exposure to traffic-related air pollution than residents without comparable exposure. Campaigns may improve awareness of vehicle emissions, road dust, particulate matter, respiratory and cardiovascular risks, and other health consequences of prolonged exposure. Education may encourage residents to reduce unnecessary exposure to heavy traffic, make informed decisions about outdoor activities, monitor available air-quality information, and take practical steps to reduce household exposure. Campaigns may also increase awareness of the greater vulnerability of children, older adults, and individuals with existing respiratory or cardiovascular conditions. However, persistent traffic congestion, limited availability of air-quality information, poor urban planning, socioeconomic constraints, inadequate public transportation, limited access to appropriate protective equipment, and residents' inability to avoid high-traffic areas may reduce the effectiveness of awareness campaigns alone. The study therefore expects accessible, practical, locally relevant, and sustained air-pollution awareness campaigns, supported by environmental and transportation interventions, to contribute significantly to improved protective practices among residents of high-traffic urban communities in Nigeria. The study is expected to contribute to the literature on air-pollution awareness, environmental health, traffic-related air pollution, respiratory health, cardiovascular health, health education, environmental risk communication, urban health, and public health in Nigeria. The findings will provide useful information to the Federal Ministry of Health and Social Welfare, Federal Ministry of Environment, state ministries of health and environment, environmental health officers, local government authorities, urban planners, transport authorities, public health practitioners, community organizations, development partners, and policymakers regarding strategies for reducing population exposure to air pollution. The study will also provide evidence-based recommendations for strengthening air-pollution awareness campaigns, improving access to local air-quality information, integrating air-pollution education into community health programmes, promoting practical exposure-reduction measures, strengthening environmental monitoring, improving urban traffic management, and implementing broader policies to reduce traffic-related air pollution across Nigerian cities.
