Effect of Workplace Vision Screening on Visual Impairment Detection among Computer Workers in Nigeria
Abstract
Visual impairment and work-related visual problems remain important occupational health concerns among computer workers in Nigeria because prolonged use of computers and other digital devices may contribute to eye strain, blurred vision, dry eyes, headaches, difficulty focusing, and other visual problems. Computer workers may spend several hours each day viewing digital screens, often under conditions involving inadequate lighting, improper viewing distance, poor workstation arrangement, prolonged uninterrupted screen use, and limited opportunities for visual breaks. Undetected visual impairment may affect workers' productivity, concentration, comfort, communication, and overall quality of life. Workplace vision screening provides an opportunity to identify visual problems among computer workers through routine occupational health assessments, visual acuity testing, eye health assessments, and employee wellness programmes. Early detection may facilitate appropriate corrective measures, prescription of corrective lenses where necessary, ergonomic adjustments, eye-care education, and referral for comprehensive eye examinations. However, limited workplace eye health programmes, inadequate screening equipment, shortage of trained eye-care personnel, low worker participation, and weak referral and follow-up systems may limit the effectiveness of workplace vision screening in Nigeria. Against this background, this study investigates the effect of workplace vision screening on visual impairment detection among computer workers in Nigeria. The study will be anchored on Occupational Health Theory, the Health Belief Model, and the Health Systems Framework. Occupational Health Theory emphasizes the prevention, identification, monitoring, and management of occupational health risks and the promotion of workers' health and well-being. The Health Belief Model explains how computer workers' perceptions of susceptibility to visual impairment, perceived severity, perceived benefits of screening, perceived barriers, and cues to action may influence participation in workplace vision screening. The Health Systems Framework emphasizes service delivery, health workforce, health information, medical products and technologies, financing, and accessibility as essential components of effective workplace vision screening and occupational eye-health programmes. Collectively, these theoretical perspectives provide a suitable framework for explaining how workplace vision screening may influence visual impairment detection among computer workers in Nigeria. The study will adopt a quantitative cross-sectional analytical or quasi-experimental research design. The study population will comprise computer workers employed in selected public and private organizations across Nigeria. A multistage sampling technique will be used to select states, organizations, institutions, departments, and eligible computer workers. Workplace vision screening will be measured using indicators such as availability of workplace vision screening programmes, screening coverage, frequency of screening activities, visual acuity assessment, near-vision assessment, colour vision assessment where appropriate, availability of trained eye-care personnel, screening equipment, workstation and lighting assessment, eye-health education, and referral arrangements. Visual impairment detection will be assessed using indicators such as reduced visual acuity, uncorrected refractive error, near-vision difficulties, suspected visual impairment, newly identified visual problems, severity of detected impairment, referrals for comprehensive eye examination, prescription of corrective lenses where appropriate, and linkage to eye-care services. Data will be collected using structured questionnaires, workplace screening registers, visual acuity assessment forms, occupational health records, eye-care referral records, and relevant organizational documents. Descriptive statistics will be used to summarize workers' characteristics, computer-use patterns, screening coverage, visual assessment findings, and patterns of visual impairment detection. Inferential statistical techniques, including chi-square tests, correlation analysis, and logistic or multiple regression analysis, will be used to determine the effect of workplace vision screening on visual impairment detection. Where appropriate, visual impairment detection rates before and after implementation of workplace vision screening programmes may be compared to determine changes associated with the intervention. Diagnostic tests will also be conducted to assess the reliability, validity, and robustness of the findings. The study is expected to find that workplace vision screening has a significant positive effect on visual impairment detection among computer workers in Nigeria. Computer workers who participate in workplace vision screening are expected to have a higher likelihood of having previously undetected visual impairment or visual problems identified than workers without access to routine workplace screening. Regular visual assessment may facilitate early identification of reduced visual acuity and refractive errors and provide opportunities for corrective intervention, eye-care education, appropriate workstation adjustments, and referral for comprehensive eye examinations. Workplace screening may also increase workers' awareness of healthy computer-use practices, including appropriate viewing distance, adequate lighting, appropriate screen positioning, and regular visual breaks. Early detection and correction of visual impairment may improve workers' comfort, concentration, productivity, and ability to perform computer-related tasks effectively. Conversely, inadequate screening coverage, limited screening resources, shortage of trained eye-care personnel, low worker participation, poor workplace ergonomics, and weak referral and follow-up systems may reduce the effectiveness of workplace vision screening. The study therefore expects regular and accessible workplace vision screening to contribute significantly to improved detection and early management of visual impairment among computer workers in Nigeria. The study is expected to contribute to the literature on workplace vision screening, visual impairment detection, computer workers, occupational eye health, digital eye strain, refractive errors, workplace health promotion, occupational health, preventive healthcare, and public health in Nigeria. The findings will provide useful information to the Federal Ministry of Health and Social Welfare, Federal Ministry of Labour and Employment, employers, public and private organizations, occupational health practitioners, optometrists, ophthalmologists, workplace safety officers, human resource managers, healthcare providers, development partners, and policymakers regarding strategies for protecting the visual health of computer workers. The study will also provide evidence-based recommendations for expanding workplace vision screening programmes, improving access to regular visual acuity assessments, strengthening eye-health education, promoting appropriate computer workstation ergonomics, encouraging regular visual breaks, increasing availability of trained eye-care personnel and screening equipment, strengthening referral and follow-up systems, and integrating vision screening into comprehensive workplace health and wellness programmes across Nigeria.
