Effect of Smartphone Health-Tracking Education on Personal Health Monitoring Practices among University Students in Nigeria
Abstract
Smartphone-based health tracking has become an increasingly relevant aspect of personal health management among university students in Nigeria due to the widespread use of smartphones and the growing availability of mobile health applications. Smartphones can support monitoring of physical activity, sleep patterns, heart rate, body weight, menstrual cycles, medication reminders, dietary habits, and other personal health indicators. However, the availability of health-tracking features does not necessarily ensure their appropriate or consistent use. Some students may have limited knowledge of how to select reliable health applications, interpret health-tracking information, protect personal health data, recognize limitations in smartphone-generated measurements, or use monitoring information appropriately. Smartphone health-tracking education provides an opportunity to improve students' understanding and practical use of digital tools for personal health monitoring. Against this background, this study investigates the effect of smartphone health-tracking education on personal health monitoring practices among university students in Nigeria. The study will be anchored on the Health Belief Model, Technology Acceptance Model, and Health Literacy Framework. The Health Belief Model explains how students' perceptions of susceptibility to health problems, perceived severity, perceived benefits of health monitoring, perceived barriers, and cues to action may influence their use of smartphone health-tracking technologies. The Technology Acceptance Model emphasizes perceived usefulness and perceived ease of use as important factors influencing students' acceptance and utilization of smartphone-based health technologies. The Health Literacy Framework emphasizes students' ability to access, understand, evaluate, and appropriately apply digital health information generated or presented through smartphone applications. Collectively, these theoretical perspectives provide a suitable framework for explaining how smartphone health-tracking education may influence personal health monitoring practices among university students in Nigeria. The study will adopt a quantitative quasi-experimental or analytical cross-sectional research design. The study population will comprise undergraduate and postgraduate students aged 18 years and above enrolled in selected public and private universities across Nigeria. A multistage sampling technique will be used to select geopolitical zones, states, universities, faculties or departments, levels of study, and eligible students. Smartphone health-tracking education will be assessed using indicators such as exposure to educational sessions, frequency and duration of education, awareness of health-tracking applications, selection of reliable health applications, use of smartphone sensors and wearable-linked applications, interpretation of health indicators, recognition of measurement limitations, privacy and data-security awareness, appropriate storage and sharing of health information, and appropriate use of health-tracking results. Personal health monitoring practices will be assessed using indicators such as regular monitoring of physical activity, sleep, body weight, heart rate or other available health indicators, recording and reviewing personal health information, setting realistic health goals, monitoring changes over time, using reminders where appropriate, maintaining privacy of personal health information, verifying concerning results, and seeking professional healthcare advice when abnormal or persistent findings are identified. Data will be collected using structured questionnaires, standardized digital health literacy and health-monitoring practice assessment tools, smartphone health-application usage assessments, and relevant university health-programme records where available. Descriptive statistics will be used to summarize students' characteristics, smartphone ownership and usage patterns, health-tracking application use, sources of digital health information, exposure to education, and personal health monitoring practices. Inferential statistical techniques, including chi-square tests, t-tests, correlation analysis, and logistic or multiple regression analysis where appropriate, will be used to determine the effect of smartphone health-tracking education on personal health monitoring practices. Where a quasi-experimental design is adopted, health-monitoring practice scores before and after the educational intervention may be compared with those of a comparison group to determine changes associated with the intervention. Diagnostic tests will also be conducted to assess the reliability, validity, and robustness of the findings. The study is expected to find that smartphone health-tracking education has a significant positive effect on personal health monitoring practices among university students in Nigeria. Students exposed to structured and practical smartphone health-tracking education are expected to demonstrate more consistent and appropriate personal health monitoring practices than students without comparable exposure. Education may improve students' ability to identify appropriate health-tracking applications, understand the meaning and limitations of health indicators, establish realistic monitoring routines, and use digital health information responsibly. It may also increase awareness of privacy and data-security concerns and encourage students to verify unusual results rather than relying solely on smartphone-generated measurements for diagnosis or treatment decisions. Students may become more likely to use health-monitoring information to support healthy lifestyle choices and seek professional healthcare when persistent or concerning findings are identified. However, inconsistent smartphone use, limited digital health literacy, concerns about privacy, inaccurate or incomplete measurements, cost of some applications or devices, unreliable internet access, and overreliance on self-generated health information may reduce the effectiveness of education alone. The study therefore expects accessible, evidence-based, practical, and sustained smartphone health-tracking education to contribute significantly to improved personal health monitoring practices among university students in Nigeria. The study is expected to contribute to the literature on digital health, smartphone health applications, personal health monitoring, digital health literacy, mobile health, university student health, preventive healthcare, health technology, and public health in Nigeria. The findings will provide useful information to the Federal Ministry of Health and Social Welfare, Federal Ministry of Education, universities, university health centres, healthcare professionals, digital-health practitioners, technology developers, public health practitioners, student organizations, development partners, and policymakers regarding strategies for promoting responsible use of smartphone-based health technologies. The study will also provide evidence-based recommendations for integrating digital health literacy and smartphone health-tracking education into university health programmes, improving students' ability to interpret health information, promoting responsible management of personal health data, encouraging appropriate verification of digital health measurements, strengthening links between digital monitoring and professional healthcare services, and developing effective digital health communication strategies for university students across Nigeria.
