Effect of Occupational Health Education on Workplace Injury Prevention Practices among Factory Workers in Nigeria
Abstract
Workplace injuries remain an important occupational and public health concern in Nigeria, particularly among factory workers who may be exposed to machinery, hazardous substances, excessive noise, heat, electrical hazards, manual handling, falls, and other occupational risks. Workplace injuries can result in physical impairment, loss of productivity, absenteeism, increased healthcare costs, and financial hardship for workers and their families. Occupational health education provides workers with information about workplace hazards, risk identification, safe work procedures, proper use of personal protective equipment, emergency procedures, accident reporting, and other measures for preventing occupational injuries. Workplace injury prevention practices refer to behaviours adopted by workers to reduce their exposure to occupational hazards and prevent workplace injuries, including proper use of personal protective equipment, adherence to safety procedures, safe handling of machinery and materials, hazard reporting, housekeeping, and participation in workplace safety programmes. In Nigeria, inadequate safety knowledge, poor compliance with safety procedures, limited access to protective equipment, inadequate safety supervision, production pressures, and weak occupational health systems may affect injury prevention practices among factory workers. Effective occupational health education may improve workers' knowledge, risk perception, safety attitudes, and adoption of appropriate workplace injury prevention practices. Against this background, this study investigates the effect of occupational health education on workplace injury prevention practices among factory workers in Nigeria. The study is anchored on the Health Belief Model, Social Cognitive Theory, and the Hierarchy of Controls framework. The Health Belief Model explains preventive occupational health behaviour through perceived susceptibility, perceived severity, perceived benefits, perceived barriers, and cues to action, providing a basis for understanding workers' decisions to adopt injury prevention practices. Social Cognitive Theory emphasizes the interaction between knowledge, self-efficacy, social influences, behavioural capabilities, and the workplace environment in shaping safety behaviour. The Hierarchy of Controls framework emphasizes the importance of identifying and controlling occupational hazards through systematic measures, while recognizing the role of worker education and safe work practices within a broader workplace safety system. Collectively, these theoretical perspectives provide a suitable framework for explaining how occupational health education may influence workplace injury prevention practices among factory workers in Nigeria. The study will adopt a quantitative quasi-experimental research design. Primary data will be collected from factory workers in selected manufacturing facilities in Nigeria using a structured self-administered or interviewer-administered questionnaire and an observational workplace safety checklist. A multistage sampling technique will be employed to select states, industrial areas, factories, production units, and eligible workers. Where feasible, selected factories or worker groups will be assigned to intervention and comparison groups. Workers in the intervention group will receive structured occupational health education covering workplace hazards, hazard identification, safe operating procedures, machine safety, chemical safety, electrical safety, manual handling, fire and emergency procedures, accident reporting, housekeeping, correct and consistent use of personal protective equipment, and workplace safety responsibilities. Workplace injury prevention practices will be assessed using indicators such as appropriate use of personal protective equipment, adherence to standard operating procedures, safe machine operation, proper handling of hazardous materials, workplace housekeeping, hazard reporting, participation in safety training, and compliance with emergency procedures. Descriptive statistics will be used to summarize workers' sociodemographic and occupational characteristics, occupational health knowledge, exposure to education, and injury prevention practices. Inferential statistical techniques, including chi-square tests, paired-sample tests, independent-sample tests, and multiple regression analysis, will be used to determine the effect of occupational health education on workplace injury prevention practices. Appropriate diagnostic tests will also be conducted to assess the reliability of the research instrument, model assumptions, goodness of fit, and robustness of the findings. The study is expected to find that occupational health education has a significant positive effect on workplace injury prevention practices among factory workers in Nigeria. Workers exposed to structured occupational health education are expected to demonstrate improved knowledge of workplace hazards, greater awareness of injury risks, and increased compliance with appropriate safety practices. Education may encourage proper and consistent use of personal protective equipment, adherence to standard operating procedures, safer machinery operation, appropriate handling of hazardous materials, improved housekeeping, timely reporting of hazards, and greater participation in workplace safety programmes. However, education alone may not guarantee sustained injury prevention practices because workers may continue to face barriers such as inadequate protective equipment, poor safety supervision, outdated machinery, production pressures, insufficient staffing, and weak enforcement of workplace safety policies. Consequently, occupational health education is expected to be most effective when supported by adequate safety equipment, effective supervision, hazard control measures, regular safety inspections, appropriate workplace policies, and strong management commitment to occupational health and safety. The study is expected to contribute to the literature on occupational health, workplace safety, injury prevention, health education, industrial health, and public health in Nigeria by providing empirical evidence on the effect of occupational health education on workplace injury prevention practices among factory workers. The findings will provide useful information to the Federal Ministry of Labour and Employment, Federal Ministry of Health and Social Welfare, state occupational health authorities, factory management, occupational health professionals, labour organizations, safety officers, healthcare providers, development partners, and policymakers regarding strategies for reducing workplace injuries. The study will also provide evidence-based recommendations for strengthening occupational health education, improving workplace safety training, ensuring adequate availability and appropriate use of personal protective equipment, strengthening safety supervision and hazard reporting systems, improving workplace inspections, and promoting a stronger safety culture among factory workers across Nigeria.
