Effect of Men's Mental Health Education on Mental Health Help-Seeking Knowledge among Adult Men in Nigeria

Abstract

Mental health problems among adult men represent an important public health concern and may affect emotional well-being, family relationships, occupational functioning, social participation, and overall quality of life. Adult men may experience psychological distress associated with financial pressures, unemployment, relationship difficulties, occupational stress, social expectations, and other life challenges. However, many men may have limited knowledge about mental health conditions and available support services and may be reluctant to seek professional assistance because of stigma, concerns about appearing weak, cultural expectations surrounding masculinity, fear of judgment, limited awareness of available services, and misconceptions about mental healthcare. Men's mental health education provides an opportunity to improve knowledge of common mental health problems, warning signs, available sources of support, and appropriate help-seeking pathways. Against this background, this study investigates the effect of men's mental health education on mental health help-seeking knowledge among adult men in Nigeria. The study will be anchored on the Health Belief Model, Theory of Planned Behavior, and Health Literacy Framework. The Health Belief Model explains how men's perceptions of their susceptibility to mental health problems, perceived severity, perceived benefits of seeking assistance, perceived barriers, and cues to action may influence their help-seeking knowledge and intentions. The Theory of Planned Behavior explains how attitudes toward professional mental healthcare, perceived social expectations, perceived behavioural control, and intentions may influence men's understanding and acceptance of help-seeking. The Health Literacy Framework emphasizes men's ability to access, understand, evaluate, and appropriately apply mental health information when identifying psychological concerns and choosing suitable sources of assistance. Collectively, these theoretical perspectives provide a suitable framework for explaining how men's mental health education may influence mental health help-seeking knowledge among adult men in Nigeria. The study will adopt a quantitative quasi-experimental or analytical cross-sectional research design. The study population will comprise adult men aged 18 years and above residing in selected urban, semi-urban, and rural communities across Nigeria. A multistage sampling technique will be used to select geopolitical zones, states, local government areas, communities, households, and eligible participants. Men's mental health education will be assessed using indicators such as exposure to structured mental health education, frequency and duration of educational sessions, knowledge of common mental health conditions, recognition of emotional and behavioural warning signs, understanding of mental health risk and protective factors, available treatment options, stigma reduction, coping strategies, professional support services, and appropriate referral pathways. Mental health help-seeking knowledge will be assessed using indicators such as knowledge of when professional assistance is required, awareness of psychologists, psychiatrists, counsellors, social workers, primary healthcare providers, and other appropriate support services, knowledge of how to access mental health services, understanding of confidentiality, awareness of referral procedures, recognition of situations requiring urgent assistance, and ability to distinguish professional mental health support from inappropriate or potentially harmful sources of advice. Data will be collected using structured questionnaires, validated mental health literacy instruments, help-seeking knowledge assessments, community health programme records, and educational programme attendance records. Descriptive statistics will be used to summarize participants' characteristics, exposure to men's mental health education, and help-seeking knowledge scores. Inferential statistical techniques, including chi-square tests, t-tests, correlation analysis, and logistic or multiple regression analysis where appropriate, will be used to determine the effect of men's mental health education on mental health help-seeking knowledge. Where a quasi-experimental design is adopted, help-seeking knowledge scores before and after the educational intervention may be compared to determine changes associated with the programme. Diagnostic tests will also be conducted to assess the reliability, validity, and robustness of the findings. The study is expected to find that men's mental health education has a significant positive effect on mental health help-seeking knowledge among adult men in Nigeria. Men exposed to structured and culturally appropriate mental health education are expected to demonstrate improved knowledge of common mental health conditions, recognition of warning signs, awareness of available professional services, and understanding of appropriate pathways for seeking assistance. Education may help challenge misconceptions that mental health difficulties should be managed privately and may improve understanding that seeking professional support is an appropriate component of maintaining overall health. Interactive discussions, peer-led education, workplace-based programmes, community outreach, and practical information about accessing services may further improve men's knowledge and confidence regarding help-seeking. However, stigma, cultural expectations of masculinity, financial limitations, concerns about confidentiality, limited availability of mental health professionals, geographical barriers, and fear of social judgment may continue to restrict men's access to appropriate care. The study therefore expects accessible, culturally sensitive, male-responsive, and regularly reinforced mental health education to contribute significantly to improved mental health help-seeking knowledge among adult men in Nigeria. The study is expected to contribute to the literature on men's mental health education, mental health help-seeking knowledge, adult men's health, mental health literacy, health-seeking behaviour, stigma reduction, community mental health, and public health in Nigeria. The findings will provide useful information to the Federal Ministry of Health and Social Welfare, Federal Ministry of Youth Development, National Primary Health Care Development Agency, state ministries of health, primary healthcare facilities, workplaces, mental health professionals, men's health organizations, community-based organizations, development partners, and policymakers regarding strategies for improving men's mental health. The study will also provide evidence-based recommendations for integrating men's mental health education into community and workplace health programmes, strengthening mental health literacy, improving awareness of accessible professional services, addressing harmful misconceptions about masculinity and mental healthcare, reducing stigma, and developing sustainable male-responsive mental health promotion programmes across Nigeria.
