Effect of Laboratory Information Management Systems on Laboratory Result Reporting Time in Nigerian Hospitals

 

Abstract

Timely laboratory result reporting is an important component of effective healthcare delivery because clinicians depend on accurate and promptly available laboratory results for diagnosis, treatment decisions, patient monitoring, and disease management. Delays in laboratory result reporting may contribute to prolonged patient waiting times, delayed diagnosis, postponed treatment, increased hospital stay, and reduced efficiency of healthcare services. In Nigerian hospitals, laboratory result reporting may be affected by manual documentation, inefficient information flow, high laboratory workload, errors in transcription, poor coordination between laboratory and clinical departments, inadequate information technology infrastructure, and delays in communicating completed results to healthcare providers. Laboratory Information Management Systems (LIMS) provide digital platforms for managing laboratory processes, including patient and specimen registration, test requests, sample tracking, result entry, validation, storage, retrieval, and electronic reporting. Effective implementation of LIMS may improve information flow and reduce delays associated with manual laboratory reporting. Against this background, this study investigates the effect of Laboratory Information Management Systems on laboratory result reporting time in Nigerian hospitals. The study will be anchored on the Donabedian Model of Healthcare Quality, Systems Theory, and the Technology Acceptance Model. The Donabedian Model explains healthcare quality through structure, process, and outcome, with LIMS representing an important technological and organizational structure and laboratory result reporting time serving as a measurable outcome. Systems Theory views laboratory services as an interconnected system involving patients, laboratory scientists, specimen collection, diagnostic equipment, information systems, clinicians, medical records, and hospital management. The Technology Acceptance Model explains how perceived usefulness and perceived ease of use may influence healthcare workers' acceptance and effective utilization of LIMS. Collectively, these theoretical perspectives provide a suitable framework for explaining how Laboratory Information Management Systems may influence laboratory result reporting time in Nigerian hospitals. The study will adopt a quantitative quasi-experimental or analytical comparative research design. The study population will comprise selected public and private hospitals in Nigeria, laboratory professionals, healthcare workers involved in laboratory testing and result utilization, and laboratory test records. A multistage sampling technique will be used to select states, local government areas, hospitals, laboratory departments, diagnostic units, healthcare workers, and eligible laboratory records. LIMS utilization will be assessed using indicators such as availability of an operational LIMS, electronic test ordering, patient and specimen registration, barcode or unique specimen identification, sample tracking, automated result entry, result validation, electronic result transmission, integration with hospital information systems, user accessibility, system reliability, data security, staff training, technical support, and system downtime. Laboratory result reporting time will be assessed using indicators such as time from specimen collection to laboratory receipt, specimen processing time, time from completion of analysis to result validation, time from validation to result release, total turnaround time, proportion of results reported within established laboratory targets, delayed results, and frequency of reporting errors. Data will be collected using structured questionnaires, laboratory registers, LIMS records, laboratory information-system logs, specimen tracking records, result-reporting records, medical records, and direct observation or time-tracking tools where appropriate. Descriptive statistics will be used to summarize hospital and laboratory characteristics, LIMS utilization, test volumes, and result reporting times. Inferential statistical techniques, including chi-square tests, t-tests, correlation analysis, and logistic or multiple regression analysis where appropriate, will be used to determine the effect of LIMS on laboratory result reporting time. Where a quasi-experimental design is adopted, laboratory reporting times before and after implementation of LIMS may be compared. Diagnostic tests will also be conducted to assess the reliability, validity, and robustness of the findings. The study is expected to find that effective Laboratory Information Management Systems have a significant negative effect on laboratory result reporting time, indicating that LIMS implementation reduces delays in laboratory result reporting. Hospitals with functional LIMS are expected to demonstrate shorter turnaround times, faster result validation and release, improved specimen tracking, fewer transcription errors, and greater compliance with established reporting timelines compared with facilities relying primarily on manual processes. Electronic test requests, automated specimen identification, real-time sample tracking, direct result entry, and electronic transmission of validated results may improve coordination between laboratories and clinical departments. LIMS may also reduce duplication of data entry and improve access to historical laboratory information. However, inadequate electricity supply, unreliable internet connectivity, system downtime, insufficient technical support, inadequate staff training, poor system integration, high laboratory workload, and resistance to technological change may limit the effectiveness of LIMS. The study therefore expects reliable, user-friendly, integrated, and adequately supported Laboratory Information Management Systems to contribute significantly to faster laboratory result reporting in Nigerian hospitals. The study is expected to contribute to the literature on Laboratory Information Management Systems, laboratory result reporting, laboratory turnaround time, health information systems, digital health, laboratory quality management, diagnostic services, healthcare efficiency, and patient safety in Nigeria. The findings will provide useful information to the Federal Ministry of Health and Social Welfare, state ministries of health, hospital management boards, medical laboratory departments, medical laboratory scientists, health information managers, healthcare administrators, information technology professionals, development partners, and policymakers regarding strategies for improving laboratory information management and diagnostic service delivery. The study will also provide evidence-based recommendations for expanding LIMS adoption, improving laboratory digital infrastructure, integrating LIMS with electronic health records and hospital information systems, strengthening staff training and technical support, improving power and connectivity infrastructure, monitoring laboratory turnaround times, reducing result-reporting errors, and incorporating LIMS into laboratory quality-improvement programmes across Nigerian hospitals.
