Effect of Hearing Health Education on Hearing Conservation Practices among Industrial Workers in Nigeria

Abstract

Occupational hearing loss is an important public health and occupational health concern, particularly among industrial workers who may be regularly exposed to high levels of workplace noise and other occupational hazards. Prolonged exposure to excessive noise can result in noise-induced hearing loss, tinnitus, communication difficulties, reduced quality of life, and impaired work performance. Hearing health education provides industrial workers with information about the causes and consequences of occupational hearing loss, workplace noise hazards, early signs of hearing impairment, appropriate use of hearing protection devices, noise exposure reduction, workplace hearing assessment, and other measures for preventing occupational hearing damage. Hearing conservation practices refer to behaviours adopted by workers to protect their hearing, including consistent and correct use of hearing protection devices, adherence to workplace noise-control procedures, avoidance or reduction of unnecessary noise exposure, participation in occupational hearing screening, prompt reporting of hearing-related symptoms, and compliance with workplace safety guidelines. In Nigeria, inadequate awareness of occupational noise hazards, inconsistent use of hearing protection devices, limited access to hearing screening, workplace safety challenges, and inadequate enforcement of occupational health regulations may increase the risk of occupational hearing loss among industrial workers. Effective hearing health education may improve workers' knowledge, risk perception, and adoption of appropriate hearing conservation practices. Against this background, this study investigates the effect of hearing health education on hearing conservation practices among industrial workers in Nigeria. The study is anchored on the Health Belief Model, Social Cognitive Theory, and Knowledge-Attitude-Practice framework. The Health Belief Model explains preventive health behaviour through perceived susceptibility, perceived severity, perceived benefits, perceived barriers, and cues to action, providing a basis for understanding workers' adoption of hearing conservation practices. Social Cognitive Theory emphasizes the interaction between knowledge, self-efficacy, social influences, behavioural capabilities, and environmental conditions in shaping occupational health behaviour. The Knowledge-Attitude-Practice framework provides a basis for examining how improved knowledge and attitudes resulting from hearing health education may influence hearing conservation practices. Collectively, these theoretical perspectives provide a suitable framework for explaining how hearing health education may influence hearing conservation practices among industrial workers in Nigeria. The study will adopt a quantitative quasi-experimental research design. Primary data will be collected from industrial workers in selected manufacturing, construction, mining, processing, and other noise-exposed industrial workplaces in Nigeria using a structured self-administered questionnaire and, where feasible, an observational hearing conservation practice checklist. A multistage sampling technique will be employed to select states, industrial organizations, work units, and eligible workers. Where feasible, selected worker groups or workplaces will be assigned to intervention and comparison groups. Workers in the intervention group will receive structured hearing health education covering occupational noise hazards, causes and consequences of noise-induced hearing loss, early warning signs, appropriate selection and use of hearing protection devices, noise exposure reduction, workplace hearing screening, reporting of hearing-related symptoms, and relevant occupational safety procedures. Hearing conservation practices will be assessed using indicators such as consistent use of hearing protection devices, correct use and maintenance of protective equipment, participation in workplace hearing screening, compliance with noise-control procedures, avoidance of unnecessary noise exposure, reporting of hearing-related symptoms, and adherence to occupational health and safety guidelines. Descriptive statistics will be used to summarize workers' sociodemographic and occupational characteristics, hearing health knowledge, exposure to education, and hearing conservation practices. Inferential statistical techniques, including chi-square tests, paired-sample tests, independent-sample tests, and logistic or multiple regression analysis, will be used to determine the effect of hearing health education on hearing conservation practices. Appropriate diagnostic tests will also be conducted to assess the reliability of the research instrument, model assumptions, goodness of fit, and robustness of the findings. The study is expected to find that hearing health education has a significant positive effect on hearing conservation practices among industrial workers in Nigeria. Workers exposed to structured hearing health education are expected to demonstrate improved knowledge of occupational noise hazards and greater adherence to hearing conservation practices. Education may increase workers' awareness of the long-term consequences of excessive noise exposure, improve the correct and consistent use of hearing protection devices, encourage participation in workplace hearing screening, strengthen compliance with noise-control measures, and promote early reporting of hearing-related symptoms. However, education alone may not guarantee sustained hearing conservation practices because workers may continue to face barriers such as discomfort associated with hearing protection devices, inadequate availability or poor maintenance of protective equipment, workplace production pressures, high noise levels, inadequate supervision, and weak enforcement of occupational safety measures. Consequently, hearing health education is expected to be most effective when supported by accessible and appropriate hearing protection devices, regular occupational hearing screening, effective workplace noise-control measures, trained occupational health personnel, management commitment, and enforcement of workplace safety regulations. The study is expected to contribute to the literature on occupational hearing health, hearing conservation, occupational safety, workplace health education, industrial health, occupational disease prevention, and public health in Nigeria by providing empirical evidence on the effect of hearing health education on hearing conservation practices among industrial workers. The findings will provide useful information to the Federal Ministry of Health and Social Welfare, Federal Ministry of Labour and Employment, National Institute for Occupational Safety and Health, relevant regulatory agencies, industrial organizations, occupational health professionals, employers, trade unions, public health practitioners, development partners, and policymakers regarding strategies for preventing occupational hearing loss. The study will also provide evidence-based recommendations for strengthening workplace hearing health education, improving access to appropriate hearing protection devices, expanding occupational hearing screening programmes, implementing effective workplace noise-control measures, strengthening occupational health and safety monitoring, and promoting sustained hearing conservation practices among industrial workers across Nigeria.
