Effect of Health Education on Knowledge of Child Protection Services among Secondary School Teachers in Nigeria

Abstract

Child protection services play an important role in preventing and responding to child abuse, neglect, exploitation, violence, and other threats to children's safety and wellbeing. Secondary school teachers interact regularly with adolescents and may be among the adults who first observe behavioural, emotional, physical, or academic changes that could indicate child protection concerns. However, teachers in Nigeria may have limited knowledge of available child protection services, reporting channels, referral procedures, child protection agencies, social welfare services, healthcare support, counselling services, and appropriate mechanisms for responding to suspected cases. Limited knowledge may result in delayed reporting, inappropriate handling of disclosures, failure to refer affected students, or reliance on informal approaches that may not adequately protect children. Health education provides an opportunity to improve teachers' understanding of child protection services and strengthen their ability to identify appropriate sources of assistance for children at risk. Against this background, this study investigates the effect of health education on knowledge of child protection services among secondary school teachers in Nigeria. The study will be anchored on the Health Belief Model, Health Literacy Framework, and Social Ecological Model. The Health Belief Model explains how teachers' perceptions of the seriousness of child protection concerns, perceived benefits of using protection services, perceived barriers, self-efficacy, and cues to action may influence their knowledge and responses. The Health Literacy Framework emphasizes teachers' ability to access, understand, evaluate, and apply information about available child protection services and referral systems. The Social Ecological Model emphasizes the influence of individual, interpersonal, school, community, institutional, legal, and policy factors on child protection knowledge and service utilization. Collectively, these theoretical perspectives provide a suitable framework for explaining how health education may influence knowledge of child protection services among secondary school teachers in Nigeria. The study will adopt a quantitative quasi-experimental or analytical cross-sectional research design. The study population will comprise teachers employed in selected public and private secondary schools across Nigeria. A multistage sampling technique will be used to select geopolitical zones, states, local government areas, communities, schools, teaching departments, and eligible teachers. Health education will be assessed using indicators such as exposure to child protection education, frequency and duration of educational sessions, information on child abuse and neglect, child protection rights, available child protection agencies, social welfare services, healthcare services, counselling services, reporting channels, referral pathways, emergency protection services, confidentiality, documentation, professional responsibilities, and appropriate responses to child disclosures. Knowledge of child protection services will be assessed using indicators such as teachers' ability to identify available child protection agencies and services, recognize appropriate reporting channels, understand referral procedures, identify healthcare and psychosocial support services, recognize emergency protection options, understand confidentiality requirements, identify appropriate contacts for different child protection concerns, and distinguish formal child protection services from inappropriate or informal responses. Data will be collected using structured questionnaires, standardized child protection service knowledge assessment tools, scenario-based questions, school safeguarding materials, and pre-test and post-test assessments where a quasi-experimental intervention is adopted. Descriptive statistics will be used to summarize teachers' demographic and professional characteristics, teaching experience, previous exposure to child protection information, sources of information, awareness of child protection concerns, and knowledge of available services. Inferential statistical techniques, including chi-square tests, paired and independent t-tests, correlation analysis, and logistic or multiple regression analysis where appropriate, will be used to determine the effect of health education on knowledge of child protection services. Where a quasi-experimental design is adopted, knowledge scores before and after the educational intervention may be compared with those of a comparison group to determine changes associated with the intervention. Diagnostic tests will also be conducted to assess the reliability, validity, and robustness of the findings. The study is expected to find that health education has a significant positive effect on knowledge of child protection services among secondary school teachers in Nigeria. Teachers exposed to structured, practical, culturally appropriate, and sustained child protection education are expected to demonstrate greater knowledge of available protection services and referral pathways than teachers without comparable exposure. Education may improve teachers' understanding of where and how to report suspected abuse, obtain social welfare assistance, access healthcare and counselling services, and seek urgent protection for children facing immediate danger. Scenario-based education may strengthen teachers' confidence in selecting appropriate services for different child protection situations and reduce uncertainty about referral procedures. Education may also help teachers understand the importance of maintaining confidentiality and responding to child disclosures through appropriate safeguarding mechanisms rather than attempting to resolve serious protection concerns informally. However, limited availability of child protection services, unclear reporting channels, inadequate institutional support, fear of retaliation, stigma, weak referral networks, and limited awareness of relevant agencies may reduce the effectiveness of education alone. The study therefore expects accessible, practical, legally informed, and sustained health education, supported by clear institutional safeguarding procedures and functional referral systems, to contribute significantly to improved knowledge of child protection services among secondary school teachers in Nigeria. The study is expected to contribute to the literature on child protection services, teacher health education, child safeguarding, child abuse prevention, referral systems, school health, child welfare, health literacy, adolescent protection, and public health in Nigeria. The findings will provide useful information to the Federal Ministry of Health and Social Welfare, Federal Ministry of Education, state ministries of health and education, secondary schools, child protection agencies, social welfare departments, healthcare providers, counsellors, school administrators, teachers, community organizations, development partners, and policymakers regarding strategies for strengthening school-based child protection. The study will also provide evidence-based recommendations for integrating child protection service education into teacher training and professional development programmes, improving access to accurate information about protection agencies and referral pathways, strengthening school safeguarding systems, developing clear reporting and referral directories, improving collaboration between schools and child protection services, and implementing sustainable interventions that improve teachers' knowledge of child protection services across Nigeria.
