EFFECT OF HAND HYGIENE EDUCATION ON HANDWASHING PRACTICES AMONG SECONDARY SCHOOL STUDENTS IN NIGERIA

ABSTRACT

This study investigates the effect of hand hygiene education on handwashing practices among secondary school students in Nigeria. Hand hygiene, particularly regular and proper handwashing with soap and clean water, is one of the simplest, most affordable, and most effective measures for preventing the spread of infectious diseases. However, despite the importance of handwashing in maintaining personal and community health, many secondary school students do not consistently practise appropriate hand hygiene. Inadequate knowledge, misconceptions, poor attitudes, lack of motivation, limited access to water and soap, and insufficient supervision within the school environment may contribute to poor handwashing behaviour. These challenges can increase students’ vulnerability to communicable diseases and may negatively affect school attendance, academic participation, and overall wellbeing. The study therefore seeks to assess the level of knowledge and awareness of hand hygiene among secondary school students, examine their existing handwashing practices, determine the effect of structured hand hygiene education on their handwashing behaviour, and identify factors that influence compliance with recommended handwashing practices. The study will adopt a quasi-experimental research design involving selected secondary school students in Nigeria. Participants will be assessed before and after exposure to a structured hand hygiene education programme covering the importance of handwashing, appropriate handwashing techniques, critical times for handwashing, the health consequences of poor hygiene, and the appropriate use of soap and water or other suitable hygiene alternatives where necessary. Data will be collected using a structured questionnaire and an observational checklist where appropriate. The questionnaire will assess students’ knowledge, attitudes, and self-reported handwashing practices, while observation will provide additional information on actual practices within the school environment. Descriptive statistics, including frequencies, percentages, means, and standard deviations, will be used to summarise the data, while appropriate inferential statistics will be employed to determine whether significant differences exist between students’ handwashing practices before and after the educational intervention. The study is expected to demonstrate that structured hand hygiene education significantly improves students’ knowledge, attitudes, and adherence to appropriate handwashing practices. It is also expected that students exposed to the intervention will show greater awareness of critical handwashing periods, improved understanding of proper handwashing procedures, and increased willingness to practise regular hand hygiene. The study concludes that health education can play an important role in establishing sustainable handwashing behaviours among adolescents when supported by adequate facilities and continuous reinforcement. It recommends that secondary schools integrate regular hand hygiene education into school health programmes, provide adequate water and soap at strategic locations, train teachers to promote and monitor appropriate hygiene practices, and organise periodic awareness campaigns to reinforce students’ knowledge and behaviour. Parents, school administrators, health workers, and relevant government agencies should also collaborate to create an enabling environment for sustained hand hygiene practices among secondary school students.
