Effect of Energy Drink Health Education on Energy Drink Consumption Practices among University Students in Nigeria

Abstract

Energy drink consumption has become an important public health concern among university students in Nigeria because these beverages are widely promoted as products that can increase alertness, energy, concentration, and physical performance. University students may consume energy drinks because of academic demands, prolonged study periods, fatigue, social activities, sports, peer influence, and aggressive marketing. However, frequent or excessive consumption may expose students to high levels of caffeine, sugar, and other stimulants and may be associated with sleep disturbances, palpitations, anxiety, headaches, gastrointestinal discomfort, and other potential health concerns. Limited awareness of the composition, potential health effects, appropriate consumption, and risks associated with excessive energy drink intake may contribute to unhealthy consumption practices. Energy drink health education provides an opportunity to improve students' knowledge and encourage informed decisions regarding energy drink use. Against this background, this study investigates the effect of energy drink health education on energy drink consumption practices among university students in Nigeria. The study will be anchored on the Health Belief Model, Theory of Planned Behavior, and Social Cognitive Theory. The Health Belief Model explains how students' perceptions of susceptibility to energy-drink-related health problems, perceived severity, perceived benefits of reducing excessive consumption, perceived barriers, and cues to action may influence their consumption practices. The Theory of Planned Behavior emphasizes students' attitudes toward energy drinks, subjective norms, perceived behavioural control, and behavioural intentions as determinants of consumption behaviour. Social Cognitive Theory emphasizes observational learning, peer influence, self-efficacy, environmental factors, and reinforcement in developing and maintaining healthier beverage-consumption behaviours. Collectively, these theoretical perspectives provide a suitable framework for explaining how energy drink health education may influence energy drink consumption practices among university students in Nigeria. The study will adopt a quantitative quasi-experimental or analytical cross-sectional research design. The study population will comprise undergraduate and postgraduate students aged 18 years and above enrolled in selected public and private universities across Nigeria. A multistage sampling technique will be used to select geopolitical zones, states, universities, faculties or departments, levels of study, and eligible students. Energy drink health education will be assessed using indicators such as exposure to educational sessions, frequency and duration of education, information on energy drink ingredients, caffeine and sugar content, potential health effects, appropriate consumption, signs of excessive intake, effects on sleep, interactions with other caffeinated products, responsible consumption, label reading, healthier alternatives, and strategies for reducing consumption. Energy drink consumption practices will be assessed using indicators such as frequency of consumption, quantity consumed, preferred energy drink products, duration of consumption, consumption during academic activities, consumption before or during physical activity, consumption at night, mixing energy drinks with other beverages, reasons for consumption, use during examination periods, attempts to reduce consumption, and changes in consumption following health education. Data will be collected using structured questionnaires, standardized beverage-consumption assessment tools, recent consumption or frequency assessments, product-label information where available, and relevant university health programme records. Descriptive statistics will be used to summarize students' characteristics, energy drink consumption patterns, sources of information, exposure to health education, and consumption practices. Inferential statistical techniques, including chi-square tests, t-tests, correlation analysis, and logistic or multiple regression analysis where appropriate, will be used to determine the effect of energy drink health education on energy drink consumption practices. Where a quasi-experimental design is adopted, consumption-practice scores before and after the educational intervention may be compared with those of a comparison group to determine changes associated with the intervention. Diagnostic tests will also be conducted to assess the reliability, validity, and robustness of the findings. The study is expected to find that energy drink health education has a significant positive effect on energy drink consumption practices among university students in Nigeria. Students exposed to structured and practical energy drink health education are expected to demonstrate healthier consumption practices than students without comparable exposure. Education may improve students' awareness of caffeine and sugar content, potential effects of excessive consumption, the relationship between energy drinks and sleep, and the importance of monitoring overall caffeine intake. Practical education may encourage students to reduce frequent or excessive consumption, avoid consuming energy drinks late at night, read product labels, avoid combining multiple stimulant-containing products, and select healthier alternatives when appropriate. Education may also help students recognize symptoms that may warrant discontinuing consumption and seeking appropriate healthcare advice. However, academic pressure, examination-related stress, peer influence, aggressive marketing, easy availability, perceived benefits for concentration and energy, affordability, habitual consumption, and limited availability of healthier alternatives may reduce the effectiveness of education alone. The study therefore expects accessible, evidence-based, practical, and sustained energy drink health education, supported by healthier beverage options and appropriate university health policies, to contribute significantly to improved energy drink consumption practices among university students in Nigeria. The study is expected to contribute to the literature on energy drink consumption, caffeine intake, beverage consumption, nutrition education, health education, student health, sleep health, lifestyle-related health risks, and public health in Nigeria. The findings will provide useful information to the Federal Ministry of Health and Social Welfare, Federal Ministry of Education, universities, university health centres, healthcare professionals, nutritionists, public health practitioners, student organizations, youth-health programmes, development partners, and policymakers regarding strategies for promoting healthier beverage choices among university students. The study will also provide evidence-based recommendations for integrating energy drink health education into university health programmes, improving students' knowledge of energy drink composition and potential health effects, promoting responsible consumption, encouraging healthier alternatives, strengthening student-focused health communication, and supporting policies that promote healthier beverage practices within Nigerian universities.
