Effect of Domestic Violence Awareness on Help-Seeking Practices among Women of Reproductive Age in Nigeria

Abstract

Substance use among adolescents is an important public health concern because early exposure to psychoactive substances can negatively affect physical and mental health, academic performance, social relationships, and future well-being. Secondary school students represent an important population for substance use prevention because adolescence is a critical developmental period during which health behaviours and attitudes are established. Substance abuse education provides students with information about commonly misused substances, risk factors, harmful effects of substance use, consequences of early initiation, peer pressure, refusal skills, healthy coping strategies, and available sources of support. Substance use prevention practices refer to behaviours adopted by students to avoid or reduce the risk of substance use, including resisting peer pressure, avoiding high-risk environments, using appropriate coping strategies, seeking support from trusted adults, and avoiding experimentation with psychoactive substances. In Nigeria, factors such as peer influence, family circumstances, social pressures, curiosity, misinformation, stress, easy access to some substances, and inadequate prevention education may influence adolescent substance use behaviours. Effective substance abuse education may improve students' knowledge, attitudes, refusal skills, and ability to adopt behaviours that reduce their risk of substance use. Against this background, this study investigates the impact of substance abuse education on substance use prevention practices among secondary school students in Nigeria. The study is anchored on the Health Belief Model, Social Cognitive Theory, and Knowledge-Attitude-Practice framework. The Health Belief Model explains preventive behaviour through perceived susceptibility, perceived severity, perceived benefits, perceived barriers, and cues to action, providing a basis for understanding students' decisions to avoid substance use and adopt preventive behaviours. Social Cognitive Theory emphasizes the interaction between knowledge, self-efficacy, social influences, behavioural capabilities, and environmental conditions in shaping adolescent health behaviour. The Knowledge-Attitude-Practice framework provides a basis for examining how improved knowledge and attitudes resulting from substance abuse education may influence substance use prevention practices. Collectively, these theoretical perspectives provide a suitable framework for explaining how substance abuse education may influence substance use prevention practices among secondary school students in Nigeria. The study will adopt a quantitative quasi-experimental research design. Primary data will be collected from students in selected secondary schools in Nigeria using a structured anonymous self-administered questionnaire. A multistage sampling technique will be employed to select states, local government areas, schools, classes, and eligible students. Where feasible, selected schools or student groups will be assigned to intervention and comparison groups. Students in the intervention group will receive structured substance abuse education covering commonly misused substances, health and social consequences of substance use, risk factors, peer pressure, refusal and decision-making skills, healthy coping mechanisms, stress management, sources of professional and social support, and strategies for avoiding high-risk situations. Substance use prevention practices will be assessed using indicators such as ability to resist peer pressure, avoidance of substance-use environments, refusal of offers to use substances, use of healthy coping strategies, willingness to seek help from trusted adults or professionals, and avoidance of substance experimentation. Descriptive statistics will be used to summarize students' sociodemographic characteristics, baseline knowledge, exposure to substance abuse education, and substance use prevention practices. Inferential statistical techniques, including chi-square tests, paired-sample tests, independent-sample tests, and logistic or multiple regression analysis, will be used to determine the impact of substance abuse education on substance use prevention practices. Appropriate diagnostic tests will also be conducted to assess the reliability of the research instrument, model assumptions, goodness of fit, and robustness of the findings. The study is expected to find that substance abuse education has a significant positive impact on substance use prevention practices among secondary school students in Nigeria. Students exposed to structured substance abuse education are expected to demonstrate improved knowledge of the risks associated with substance use and greater adoption of preventive behaviours. Education may strengthen students' ability to resist peer pressure, improve refusal and decision-making skills, encourage healthier coping mechanisms, reduce misconceptions about psychoactive substances, and increase willingness to seek support when experiencing pressure or distress. However, education alone may not guarantee sustained prevention practices because students may continue to face challenges such as peer influence, family and community exposure, social pressures, stress, availability of substances, and limited access to adolescent-friendly support services. Consequently, substance abuse education is expected to be most effective when supported by school-based counselling, parental involvement, positive peer programmes, supportive school environments, community prevention initiatives, and accessible adolescent health services. The study is expected to contribute to the literature on adolescent health, substance use prevention, health education, school health, behavioural health, mental health promotion, and public health in Nigeria by providing empirical evidence on the impact of substance abuse education on substance use prevention practices among secondary school students. The findings will provide useful information to the Federal Ministry of Health and Social Welfare, Federal Ministry of Education, National Agency for the Control of Drugs and related agencies, state ministries of health and education, secondary school authorities, teachers, school counsellors, parents, community health workers, public health practitioners, development partners, and policymakers regarding strategies for strengthening adolescent substance use prevention. The study will also provide evidence-based recommendations for integrating substance abuse education into school health programmes, strengthening counselling and life-skills education, improving parental and community engagement, reducing misinformation about substance use, developing supportive school environments, and promoting effective substance use prevention practices among secondary school students across Nigeria.
