Effect of Community-Based Hearing Conservation Education on Hearing Protection Practices among Hairdressers in Nigeria
Abstract
Occupational hearing health is an important public health concern among workers who may be exposed to excessive or prolonged noise during their daily activities. Hairdressers may experience occupational noise exposure from hair dryers, clippers, generators, salon music, and other equipment, particularly in busy salons and environments with inadequate noise control. Repeated exposure to high levels of noise may contribute to hearing difficulties, tinnitus, communication problems, and other adverse health effects. Despite these risks, many hairdressers may have limited knowledge of occupational noise hazards and appropriate hearing-protection measures. Community-based hearing conservation education provides an opportunity to deliver practical information about noise exposure, hearing risks, early warning signs, and appropriate protective measures directly within occupational and community settings. Against this background, this study investigates the effect of community-based hearing conservation education on hearing protection practices among hairdressers in Nigeria. The study will be anchored on the Health Belief Model, Social Cognitive Theory, and Social Ecological Model. The Health Belief Model explains how hairdressers' perceptions of susceptibility to noise-induced hearing problems, perceived severity, perceived benefits of hearing protection, perceived barriers, and cues to action may influence their adoption of hearing-protection practices. Social Cognitive Theory emphasizes learning through observation, demonstration, practice, reinforcement, and self-efficacy, which are important for developing and maintaining appropriate occupational safety behaviours. The Social Ecological Model emphasizes the influence of individual, interpersonal, workplace, community, and environmental factors on occupational health practices. Collectively, these theoretical perspectives provide a suitable framework for explaining how community-based hearing conservation education may influence hearing protection practices among hairdressers in Nigeria. The study will adopt a quantitative quasi-experimental or analytical cross-sectional research design. The study population will comprise adult hairdressers aged 18 years and above working in selected formal and informal hairdressing salons across Nigeria. A multistage sampling technique will be used to select geopolitical zones, states, local government areas, communities, markets or commercial areas, salons, and eligible hairdressers. Community-based hearing conservation education will be assessed using indicators such as frequency and duration of education sessions, information on occupational noise hazards, demonstrations of hearing-protection methods, education on safe equipment use, information on noise exposure reduction, recognition of early hearing problems, availability of educational materials, practical training, and follow-up education. Hearing protection practices will be assessed using indicators such as use of earplugs or earmuffs where appropriate, reduction of unnecessary equipment noise, appropriate positioning of noisy equipment, maintenance of hair dryers and clippers, reduction of excessive salon music, control of exposure duration, use of quieter equipment where available, regular hearing checks, recognition and reporting of hearing symptoms, and other appropriate occupational noise-control practices. Data will be collected using structured questionnaires, standardized hearing-health knowledge and practice assessment tools, workplace observation checklists, hearing-protection records where available, and relevant occupational-health programme documents. Descriptive statistics will be used to summarize participants' characteristics, occupational noise exposure, exposure to hearing conservation education, and hearing-protection practices. Inferential statistical techniques, including chi-square tests, t-tests, correlation analysis, and logistic or multiple regression analysis where appropriate, will be used to determine the effect of community-based hearing conservation education on hearing protection practices. Where a quasi-experimental design is adopted, hearing-protection practice scores before and after the educational intervention may be compared with those of a comparison group to determine changes associated with the intervention. Diagnostic tests will also be conducted to assess the reliability, validity, and robustness of the findings. The study is expected to find that community-based hearing conservation education has a significant positive effect on hearing protection practices among hairdressers in Nigeria. Hairdressers exposed to structured hearing conservation education are expected to demonstrate improved adoption of appropriate practices for reducing occupational noise exposure compared with hairdressers without comparable exposure. Education may improve awareness of noise-related hearing risks, encourage appropriate use of hearing-protection devices where suitable, promote reduction of unnecessary background noise, and encourage safer management of noisy salon equipment. Practical demonstrations may improve understanding of how noise exposure can be reduced through equipment maintenance, appropriate positioning, exposure-time control, and other feasible workplace measures. Education may also encourage hairdressers to recognize early symptoms of hearing problems and seek appropriate audiological assessment. However, cost of hearing-protection devices, discomfort during use, limited awareness, workplace space constraints, inadequate access to occupational health services, perceived interference with communication, and lack of enforcement of occupational safety practices may reduce effectiveness. The study therefore expects accessible, practical, culturally appropriate, and occupationally relevant hearing conservation education to contribute significantly to improved hearing protection practices among hairdressers in Nigeria. The study is expected to contribute to the literature on occupational hearing health, hearing conservation, noise exposure, informal-sector occupational health, workplace health education, hearing protection, audiological health, and public health in Nigeria. The findings will provide useful information to the Federal Ministry of Health and Social Welfare, Federal Ministry of Labour and Employment, state ministries of health and labour, occupational health practitioners, audiologists, environmental health officers, salon associations, hairdressing organizations, community health workers, development partners, and policymakers regarding strategies for preventing occupational hearing problems among informal-sector workers. The study will also provide evidence-based recommendations for integrating hearing conservation into occupational health education programmes, improving access to practical hearing-protection information, promoting safer salon environments, encouraging appropriate noise-control measures, strengthening occupational hearing screening, and developing feasible hearing-health interventions for hairdressers and other informal-sector workers across Nigeria.
