Effect of Chemical Safety Education on Safe Chemical-Handling Practices among Beauty Salon Workers in Nigeria

Abstract

Chemical exposure is an important occupational health concern among beauty salon workers because their daily activities may involve the use of hair dyes, bleaching agents, relaxers, straightening products, nail products, disinfectants, solvents, adhesives, fragrances, and other chemical substances. Improper handling, storage, mixing, application, and disposal of these products may result in skin irritation, chemical burns, eye injuries, respiratory symptoms, allergic reactions, and other occupational health problems. Beauty salon workers may also be exposed to chemical hazards through inadequate ventilation, lack of personal protective equipment, poor product labelling, unsafe storage, accidental spills, and inappropriate disposal practices. Despite these risks, some salon workers may have limited knowledge of chemical hazards and appropriate safety procedures. Chemical safety education provides an opportunity to improve workers' understanding of chemical risks and promote safer handling practices within beauty salons. Against this background, this study investigates the effect of chemical safety education on safe chemical-handling practices among beauty salon workers in Nigeria. The study will be anchored on the Health Belief Model, Social Cognitive Theory, and Hierarchy of Controls. The Health Belief Model explains how salon workers' perceptions of susceptibility to chemical-related health problems, perceived severity, perceived benefits of safety practices, perceived barriers, and cues to action may influence their adoption of safe chemical-handling behaviours. Social Cognitive Theory emphasizes learning through observation, demonstration, practice, feedback, reinforcement, and self-efficacy in developing appropriate occupational safety practices. The Hierarchy of Controls provides a framework for understanding chemical-risk reduction through elimination or substitution of hazardous substances, engineering controls such as ventilation, administrative controls including training and safe procedures, and appropriate personal protective equipment. Collectively, these theoretical perspectives provide a suitable framework for explaining how chemical safety education may influence safe chemical-handling practices among beauty salon workers in Nigeria. The study will adopt a quantitative quasi-experimental or analytical cross-sectional research design. The study population will comprise adult beauty salon workers aged 18 years and above working in selected formal and informal beauty salons across Nigeria. A multistage sampling technique will be used to select geopolitical zones, states, local government areas, communities, commercial areas, salons, and eligible workers. Chemical safety education will be assessed using indicators such as frequency and duration of education sessions, information on chemical hazards, product-label interpretation, safe chemical storage, appropriate mixing procedures, ventilation requirements, spill management, emergency response, personal protective equipment, chemical disposal, recognition of exposure symptoms, availability of safety materials, practical demonstrations, and follow-up education. Safe chemical-handling practices will be assessed using indicators such as appropriate use of gloves and other protective equipment, reading and following product labels, correct chemical mixing and dilution, safe storage and labelling, adequate workplace ventilation, avoidance of direct skin and eye contact, proper handling of spills, safe disposal of chemical waste, prevention of food and drink contamination, appropriate use of chemical containers, hand hygiene after chemical handling, and prompt healthcare-seeking following significant exposure. Data will be collected using structured questionnaires, standardized chemical-safety knowledge and practice assessment tools, workplace observation checklists, safety-training records, and relevant occupational-health programme documents. Descriptive statistics will be used to summarize participants' characteristics, occupational chemical exposures, exposure to safety education, and chemical-handling practices. Inferential statistical techniques, including chi-square tests, t-tests, correlation analysis, and logistic or multiple regression analysis where appropriate, will be used to determine the effect of chemical safety education on safe chemical-handling practices. Where a quasi-experimental design is adopted, safe chemical-handling practice scores before and after the educational intervention may be compared with those of a comparison group to determine changes associated with the intervention. Diagnostic tests will also be conducted to assess the reliability, validity, and robustness of the findings. The study is expected to find that chemical safety education has a significant positive effect on safe chemical-handling practices among beauty salon workers in Nigeria. Workers exposed to structured chemical safety education are expected to demonstrate better compliance with recommended chemical-handling procedures than workers without comparable exposure. Education may improve workers' ability to identify chemical hazards, interpret product labels, select and use appropriate personal protective equipment, store chemicals safely, maintain adequate ventilation, and respond appropriately to spills or accidental exposure. Practical demonstrations may strengthen workers' ability to correctly mix and apply chemical products while minimizing direct exposure to the skin, eyes, and respiratory system. Education may also improve awareness of the importance of not mixing incompatible products and of seeking appropriate medical attention after significant exposure. However, limited access to protective equipment, cost of safer products, poor salon ventilation, inadequate workplace space, lack of safety regulations, informal employment conditions, and established unsafe work habits may reduce the effectiveness of education. The study therefore expects accessible, practical, culturally appropriate, and occupationally relevant chemical safety education to contribute significantly to improved safe chemical-handling practices among beauty salon workers in Nigeria. The study is expected to contribute to the literature on occupational chemical safety, beauty salon health, chemical exposure, workplace health education, occupational hygiene, personal protective equipment, informal-sector occupational health, and public health in Nigeria. The findings will provide useful information to the Federal Ministry of Health and Social Welfare, Federal Ministry of Labour and Employment, state ministries of health and labour, occupational health practitioners, environmental health officers, dermatologists, community health workers, salon associations, beauty industry organizations, development partners, and policymakers regarding strategies for reducing occupational chemical risks. The study will also provide evidence-based recommendations for integrating chemical safety education into occupational health programmes, improving access to appropriate personal protective equipment, promoting safer chemical storage and handling, strengthening workplace ventilation, improving product-label awareness, developing practical spill-response procedures, and encouraging regular occupational health education among beauty salon workers across Nigeria.

I actually googled and saw about iproject master, copied the number and contacted them through WhatsApp to ask for the availability of the material and to my luck they have it. So there was a delay with the project due to the covid19 pandemic. I was really scared before making the payment cause I’ve been scammed twice, they attended so well to me and that made me trust the process and made the payment and provided them with proof, I got my material in less than 10minutes
