Effect of Breast Health Education on Breast Health Knowledge among Female Secondary School Teachers in Nigeria

Abstract

Breast health knowledge is an important component of women's health because adequate knowledge can improve awareness of breast cancer risk factors, warning signs, breast health assessment, early detection, and appropriate healthcare-seeking practices. Female secondary school teachers represent an important population for breast health education because they are adult women who may face breast health risks and can also influence health knowledge and practices among students and within their communities. However, some female secondary school teachers in Nigeria may have inadequate breast health knowledge because of limited exposure to reliable health information, misconceptions about breast cancer, fear of diagnosis, cultural beliefs, and insufficient access to organized women's health education programmes. Breast health education provides an opportunity to improve knowledge about breast cancer risk factors, breast changes that require medical assessment, clinical breast examination, appropriate screening options, and the importance of seeking professional healthcare when abnormalities are identified. Against this background, this study investigates the effect of breast health education on breast health knowledge among female secondary school teachers in Nigeria. The study will be anchored on the Health Belief Model, Social Cognitive Theory, and Health Promotion Model. The Health Belief Model explains how teachers' perceptions of their susceptibility to breast health problems, perceived severity of breast cancer, perceived benefits of early detection, perceived barriers, and cues to action may influence their acquisition of breast health knowledge. Social Cognitive Theory emphasizes knowledge, self-efficacy, observational learning, social support, reinforcement, and environmental influences in developing and maintaining appropriate health behaviours. The Health Promotion Model emphasizes individual experiences, perceived benefits and barriers, interpersonal influences, and behavioural factors that influence participation in health-promoting activities. Collectively, these theoretical perspectives provide a suitable framework for explaining how breast health education may influence breast health knowledge among female secondary school teachers in Nigeria. The study will adopt a quantitative analytical cross-sectional or quasi-experimental research design. The study population will comprise female teachers working in selected public and private secondary schools across Nigeria. A multistage sampling technique will be used to select states, local government areas, communities, schools, and eligible female secondary school teachers. Breast health education will be assessed using indicators such as exposure to structured breast health education, frequency and duration of education sessions, information on breast cancer risk factors, warning signs and symptoms, breast health assessment, clinical breast examination, appropriate screening approaches, healthcare-seeking practices, use of educational materials, interactive teaching, demonstrations where appropriate, question-and-answer opportunities, and follow-up education. Breast health knowledge will be assessed using indicators such as knowledge of breast cancer risk factors, recognition of breast abnormalities, awareness of warning signs, understanding of the importance of early detection, knowledge of clinical breast examination, awareness of appropriate screening options, knowledge of when to seek professional healthcare, and understanding of available breast health services. Data will be collected using structured questionnaires and appropriate validated breast cancer or breast health knowledge assessment instruments. Descriptive statistics will be used to summarize participants' characteristics, exposure to breast health education, and levels of breast health knowledge. Inferential statistical techniques, including chi-square tests, t-tests, correlation analysis, and logistic or multiple regression analysis where appropriate, will be used to determine the effect of breast health education on breast health knowledge. Where a quasi-experimental design is adopted, breast health knowledge scores before and after structured education may be compared, while relevant demographic, socioeconomic, educational, reproductive, and healthcare-access factors are appropriately controlled. Diagnostic tests will also be conducted to assess the reliability, validity, and robustness of the findings. The study is expected to find that breast health education has a significant positive effect on breast health knowledge among female secondary school teachers in Nigeria. Teachers who receive structured and comprehensive breast health education are expected to demonstrate higher knowledge scores regarding breast cancer risk factors, warning signs, early detection, and appropriate healthcare-seeking practices than teachers with limited exposure to breast health education. Education may correct misconceptions, reduce fear surrounding breast cancer, improve awareness of available screening and assessment services, and increase teachers' confidence in seeking professional healthcare when breast abnormalities are identified. Improved knowledge may also enable teachers to communicate accurate breast health information to students and members of their communities. However, limited access to reliable health information, inadequate educational resources, cultural beliefs, fear of diagnosis, financial barriers, and limited availability of breast health services may reduce the effectiveness of education. The study therefore expects accessible, evidence-based, culturally appropriate, and regularly reinforced breast health education to contribute significantly to improved breast health knowledge among female secondary school teachers in Nigeria. The study is expected to contribute to the literature on breast health education, breast health knowledge, breast cancer awareness, early detection, women's health, school health promotion, health education, cancer prevention, and public health in Nigeria. The findings will provide useful information to the Federal Ministry of Health and Social Welfare, Federal Ministry of Education, National Primary Health Care Development Agency, state ministries of health and education, secondary schools, healthcare providers, breast health programmes, community health workers, development partners, and policymakers regarding strategies for strengthening breast health awareness among adult women. The study will also provide evidence-based recommendations for integrating breast health education into workplace and school-based health promotion programmes for teachers, developing culturally appropriate educational materials, strengthening referral pathways to breast health services, training health educators and healthcare providers, and promoting accurate breast health knowledge among female teachers and the wider Nigerian population.
