Effect of Autism Awareness Education on Recognition of Autism Warning Signs among Parents in Nigeria

Abstract

Autism spectrum disorder is a neurodevelopmental condition that may affect communication, social interaction, behaviour, sensory processing, and patterns of interests or activities. Early recognition of possible autism-related developmental differences may facilitate timely developmental assessment, appropriate intervention, family support, and educational planning. However, parents in Nigeria may have limited knowledge of autism and its early warning signs because of inadequate health information, misconceptions, stigma, cultural beliefs, misinformation, and limited access to developmental screening and specialist services. Some early signs may be misunderstood as normal developmental variation or attributed to poor parenting, hearing problems, spiritual causes, or other explanations, potentially delaying professional assessment. Autism awareness education provides an opportunity to improve parents' understanding of autism and their ability to recognize developmental warning signs that may warrant further evaluation. Against this background, this study investigates the effect of autism awareness education on recognition of autism warning signs among parents in Nigeria. The study will be anchored on the Health Belief Model, Health Literacy Framework, and Social Ecological Model. The Health Belief Model explains how parents' perceptions of the seriousness of developmental concerns, perceived benefits of early recognition, perceived barriers, self-efficacy, and cues to action may influence their recognition of autism warning signs and healthcare-seeking decisions. The Health Literacy Framework emphasizes parents' ability to access, understand, evaluate, and apply reliable information about autism and developmental assessment. The Social Ecological Model emphasizes the influence of individual, family, community, cultural, healthcare, educational, and socioeconomic factors on autism awareness and early recognition. Collectively, these theoretical perspectives provide a suitable framework for explaining how autism awareness education may influence recognition of autism warning signs among parents in Nigeria. The study will adopt a quantitative quasi-experimental or analytical cross-sectional research design. The study population will comprise parents or primary caregivers aged 18 years and above who have children aged below five years and reside in selected urban and rural communities across Nigeria. A multistage sampling technique will be used to select geopolitical zones, states, local government areas, communities, households, healthcare facilities, and eligible parents. Autism awareness education will be assessed using indicators such as exposure to autism education sessions, frequency and duration of education, information on autism spectrum disorder, early communication differences, limited response to name, reduced eye contact, differences in social interaction, delayed or unusual speech and language development, repetitive behaviours, restricted interests, sensory sensitivities, developmental regression, play and social differences, misconceptions about autism, available developmental assessment services, early intervention, and reliable sources of autism information. Recognition of autism warning signs will be assessed using indicators such as parents' ability to identify communication and language differences, social-interaction difficulties, repetitive behaviours, restricted interests, unusual sensory responses, reduced response to name, developmental regression, atypical play patterns, and other age-related warning signs that may warrant professional developmental assessment. Data will be collected using structured questionnaires, standardized autism-awareness and warning-sign recognition assessment tools, age-specific scenario-based questions, child health records where ethically accessible, and pre-test and post-test assessments where a quasi-experimental intervention is adopted. Descriptive statistics will be used to summarize parents' demographic and socioeconomic characteristics, children's characteristics, previous exposure to autism information, sources of information, awareness levels, and recognition patterns. Inferential statistical techniques, including chi-square tests, paired and independent t-tests, correlation analysis, and logistic or multiple regression analysis where appropriate, will be used to determine the effect of autism awareness education on recognition of autism warning signs. Where a quasi-experimental design is adopted, recognition scores before and after the educational intervention may be compared with those of a comparison group or community to determine changes associated with the intervention. Diagnostic tests will also be conducted to assess the reliability, validity, and robustness of the findings. The study is expected to find that autism awareness education has a significant positive effect on recognition of autism warning signs among parents in Nigeria. Parents exposed to structured, evidence-based, culturally sensitive, and sustained autism awareness education are expected to demonstrate greater ability to recognize possible warning signs than parents without comparable education. Education may improve parents' understanding of communication, social interaction, behavioural, sensory, and developmental differences associated with autism and encourage them to seek professional assessment when concerns arise. Scenario-based education may help parents distinguish potential warning signs from common misconceptions and recognize the importance of monitoring developmental progress over time. Education may also reduce stigma and misconceptions that autism results from poor parenting, supernatural causes, or parental wrongdoing, while promoting appropriate developmental and healthcare services. However, cultural beliefs, stigma, misinformation, financial barriers, geographical barriers, limited availability of developmental assessment services, shortage of trained professionals, and low awareness within communities may reduce the effectiveness of education alone. The study therefore expects accessible, practical, culturally appropriate, and sustained autism awareness education, supported by functional developmental screening, assessment, referral, and early-intervention services, to contribute significantly to improved recognition of autism warning signs among parents in Nigeria. The study is expected to contribute to the literature on autism awareness, autism warning signs, developmental health education, early childhood development, developmental screening, early recognition, parental health literacy, neurodevelopmental health, early intervention, child health, and public health in Nigeria. The findings will provide useful information to the Federal Ministry of Health and Social Welfare, National Primary Health Care Development Agency, Federal Ministry of Education, state ministries of health and education, primary healthcare centres, hospitals, paediatric and developmental services, healthcare professionals, community health workers, autism organizations, parent-support organizations, development partners, and policymakers regarding strategies for improving early recognition of autism. The study will also provide evidence-based recommendations for integrating autism awareness education into maternal and child health programmes, strengthening parental counselling, improving access to developmental screening and referral services, increasing community awareness, reducing stigma and misinformation, and developing sustainable interventions that promote early recognition and timely support for children with possible autism-related developmental concerns across Nigeria.
