Effect of Anxiety Awareness Programmes on Anxiety Recognition among Adolescents in Nigeria

Abstract

Anxiety is an important mental health concern among adolescents in Nigeria and may affect emotional well-being, academic performance, concentration, sleep, social relationships, school attendance, and overall quality of life. Adolescents may experience anxiety in response to academic demands, examinations, peer relationships, family difficulties, social pressures, bullying, financial challenges, and other developmental or environmental stressors. However, anxiety may remain unrecognized because adolescents may interpret symptoms as normal reactions to stress, lack knowledge about anxiety disorders, fear stigma or judgement, or have limited access to reliable mental health information. Anxiety awareness programmes provide an opportunity to improve adolescents' understanding of anxiety, including common symptoms, warning signs, risk factors, differences between normal anxiety and clinically significant anxiety, appropriate help-seeking, and available sources of support. Against this background, this study investigates the effect of anxiety awareness programmes on anxiety recognition among adolescents in Nigeria. The study will be anchored on the Health Belief Model, Social Cognitive Theory, and Mental Health Literacy Framework. The Health Belief Model explains how adolescents' perceptions of susceptibility to anxiety, perceived severity, perceived benefits of anxiety awareness, perceived barriers, and cues to action may influence their ability and willingness to recognize anxiety-related problems. Social Cognitive Theory emphasizes the roles of knowledge, self-efficacy, observational learning, peer influence, and environmental factors in shaping adolescents' recognition of mental health concerns. The Mental Health Literacy Framework emphasizes the ability to recognize mental health conditions, understand symptoms and risk factors, identify effective prevention strategies, know appropriate help-seeking pathways, and reduce misconceptions and stigma. Collectively, these theoretical perspectives provide a suitable framework for explaining how anxiety awareness programmes may influence anxiety recognition among adolescents in Nigeria. The study will adopt a quantitative quasi-experimental or analytical cross-sectional research design. The study population will comprise adolescents enrolled in selected secondary schools and other appropriate youth settings across Nigeria. A multistage sampling technique will be used to select states, local government areas, schools or youth settings, classes, and eligible adolescents. Anxiety awareness programmes will be measured using indicators such as exposure to structured awareness sessions, programme frequency and duration, educational content, recognition of anxiety symptoms, identification of warning signs, knowledge of anxiety risk factors, distinction between normal anxiety and clinically significant anxiety, information on prevention and coping strategies, help-seeking education, stigma-reduction messages, awareness of available mental health services, referral information, communication channels, and accessibility of programme materials. Anxiety recognition will be assessed using indicators such as adolescents' ability to identify common emotional, cognitive, behavioural, and physical symptoms associated with anxiety, recognize persistent or excessive anxiety, distinguish anxiety disorders from ordinary temporary worry or stress, identify warning signs requiring further assessment, recognize anxiety-related impairment in daily functioning, and identify situations in which professional assistance may be appropriate. Data will be collected using structured questionnaires and appropriately validated anxiety recognition or mental health literacy instruments administered before and after the awareness intervention where a quasi-experimental design is used. Descriptive statistics will be used to summarize participants' demographic and educational characteristics, exposure to anxiety awareness programmes, and anxiety recognition levels. Inferential statistical techniques, including paired or independent sample tests, chi-square tests, correlation analysis, and logistic or multiple regression analysis where appropriate, will be used to determine the effect of anxiety awareness programmes on anxiety recognition. Diagnostic tests will also be conducted to assess the reliability, validity, and robustness of the findings. The study is expected to find that anxiety awareness programmes have a significant positive effect on anxiety recognition among adolescents in Nigeria. Adolescents exposed to structured anxiety awareness programmes are expected to demonstrate greater ability to identify anxiety symptoms, recognize warning signs, distinguish normal worry from potentially problematic anxiety, and identify situations requiring further support compared with their baseline recognition or adolescents without similar exposure. Awareness programmes may reduce misconceptions and stigma while improving adolescents' confidence in discussing emotional concerns with parents, teachers, school counsellors, healthcare professionals, or other trusted individuals. Age-appropriate, interactive, and practical awareness approaches may improve adolescents' ability to apply anxiety-related information to real-life situations. Conversely, stigma, cultural misconceptions, inadequate mental health resources, limited availability of trained school counsellors, fear of disclosure, concerns about judgement, and insufficient integration of mental health education into adolescent health programmes may limit the effectiveness of anxiety awareness programmes. The study therefore expects accessible, age-appropriate, culturally sensitive, and sustained anxiety awareness programmes to contribute significantly to improved anxiety recognition among adolescents in Nigeria. The study is expected to contribute to the literature on anxiety awareness programmes, anxiety recognition, adolescent mental health, mental health literacy, school mental health, health education, early identification of anxiety, stigma reduction, and public health in Nigeria. The findings will provide useful information to the Federal Ministry of Education, Federal Ministry of Health and Social Welfare, state ministries of education and health, school administrators, teachers, school counsellors, psychologists, public health practitioners, parents, youth organizations, development partners, and policymakers regarding strategies for strengthening adolescent mental health awareness. The study will also provide evidence-based recommendations for integrating anxiety awareness programmes into school health and life-skills programmes, strengthening teacher and school-counsellor capacity, improving access to age-appropriate mental health educational materials, establishing clear referral pathways, reducing stigma and misconceptions, and promoting early recognition and appropriate support for anxiety among adolescents across Nigeria.
