Effect of Anonymous Online Mental Health Forums on Mental Health Help-Seeking among University Students in Nigeria
Abstract
Mental health challenges among university students are an important public health concern in Nigeria, where academic pressure, financial difficulties, relationship problems, social adjustment challenges, and other stressors may affect students' psychological wellbeing. Despite the availability of counselling and mental health services in some universities, students may be reluctant to seek professional assistance because of stigma, fear of judgment, concerns about confidentiality, limited awareness of available services, financial barriers, and uncertainty about where to obtain help. Anonymous online mental health forums provide digital spaces where students can discuss psychological concerns, exchange experiences, access information, receive peer support, and explore available sources of professional assistance without necessarily disclosing their identities. Such platforms may reduce perceived stigma and provide an initial pathway toward formal mental health support. However, misinformation, inappropriate peer advice, cyberbullying, and exposure to harmful content may also discourage appropriate help-seeking or reinforce misconceptions. Against this background, this study investigates the effect of anonymous online mental health forums on mental health help-seeking among university students in Nigeria. The study will be anchored on the Health Belief Model, Social Support Theory, and the Technology Acceptance Model. The Health Belief Model explains how students' perceptions of mental health problems, perceived severity, perceived benefits of seeking assistance, perceived barriers, and cues to action may influence their willingness to seek help. Social Support Theory emphasizes the role of emotional, informational, and peer support in reducing psychological barriers and encouraging individuals to access appropriate assistance. The Technology Acceptance Model explains how perceived usefulness, ease of use, accessibility, and trust in anonymous online platforms may influence students' engagement with digital mental health resources. Collectively, these theoretical perspectives provide a suitable framework for explaining how anonymous online mental health forums may influence mental health help-seeking among university students in Nigeria. The study will adopt a quantitative analytical cross-sectional or quasi-experimental research design. The study population will comprise undergraduate students enrolled in selected public and private universities across Nigeria. A multistage sampling technique will be used to select states, universities, faculties, departments, and eligible students. Exposure to anonymous online mental health forums will be measured using indicators such as awareness of online forums, frequency of participation, duration of participation, frequency of posting or reading mental health discussions, use of anonymous identities, exposure to peer-support discussions, access to mental health information, interaction with trained professionals where available, perceived anonymity, perceived privacy, perceived usefulness, ease of access, and exposure to referral information. Mental health help-seeking will be assessed using indicators such as willingness to seek professional help, initiation of counselling, use of university counselling services, contact with mental health professionals, acceptance of referrals, attendance at counselling sessions, use of community mental health services, help-seeking from trusted individuals, and intention to seek professional assistance when experiencing significant psychological distress. Data will be collected using structured questionnaires, validated help-seeking instruments, and relevant online forum participation measures. Where a quasi-experimental design is used, help-seeking attitudes, intentions, and service utilization will be assessed before and after exposure to an anonymous online mental health forum intervention. Descriptive statistics will be used to summarize students' demographic and academic characteristics, patterns of forum participation, and mental health help-seeking behaviours. Inferential statistical techniques, including paired or independent sample tests, chi-square tests, correlation analysis, and logistic or multiple regression analysis where appropriate, will be used to determine the effect of anonymous online mental health forums on mental health help-seeking. Diagnostic tests will also be conducted to assess the reliability, validity, and robustness of the findings. The study is expected to find that participation in appropriately moderated anonymous online mental health forums has a significant positive effect on mental health help-seeking among university students in Nigeria. Students who participate in supportive and well-moderated forums are expected to demonstrate greater willingness to seek professional assistance, increased awareness of available counselling services, stronger intentions to access mental health care, and greater utilization of appropriate support services compared with their baseline behaviour or students without similar exposure. Anonymity may reduce fear of stigma and judgment, allowing students to discuss sensitive concerns and receive information about available support options. Peer experiences, supportive discussions, mental health education, and referral information may further encourage students to move from informal online discussions toward appropriate professional care when necessary. However, misinformation, unqualified advice, harmful content, cyberbullying, privacy concerns, and inadequate moderation may limit the effectiveness of online forums and potentially discourage appropriate help-seeking. The study therefore expects accessible, confidential, professionally moderated, and evidence-based anonymous online mental health forums to contribute significantly to improved mental health help-seeking among university students in Nigeria. The study is expected to contribute to the literature on anonymous online mental health forums, mental health help-seeking, university students, digital mental health, online peer support, mental health literacy, e-mental health, health communication, stigma reduction, and public health in Nigeria. The findings will provide useful information to the National Universities Commission, Federal Ministry of Education, Federal Ministry of Health and Social Welfare, university counselling centres, psychologists, psychiatrists, counsellors, digital mental health providers, student organizations, technology developers, development partners, and policymakers regarding the responsible use of online platforms for mental health promotion. The study will also provide evidence-based recommendations for developing professionally moderated online mental health forums, strengthening referral pathways from online platforms to formal mental health services, protecting users' privacy, addressing misinformation and harmful content, improving digital mental health literacy, and developing sustainable online peer-support and help-seeking initiatives across Nigerian universities.
