A HISTORY OF THE NIGERIAN DEFENCE ACADEMY 1964-2006

CHAPTER ONE

INTRODUCTION

1.1 Background of the Study

The Nigerian Defence Academy (NDA) was established on 5th February, 1964 to trains officers for the Armed Forces of Nigeria in response to the defence need of independent Nigeria. Before then, the institution responsible for Military training in Nigeria was known as the Royal Military Forces Training College (RMFTC). After independence in 1960, the college became known as the Nigerian Military Training College (NMTC). The role of the Academy was to provide each officer cadet with knowledge, skills and values necessary to meet the requirements of a military officer through military, academic and character development. In 1964 NMTC was renamed Nigerian Defence Academy (NDA). The NDA is an institution where selected young able-bodied men and women are groomed into well educated, courageous, virile and erudite subalterns. The vision of the NDA is to produce officers with broad-based training in both military and academic subjects designed to serve as a foundation for the future progressive development of officers of the Nigerian Armed Forces.

The mission of NDA similar to NMTC, is to provide each officer cadet with the knowledge, skills and values necessary to meet the requirements of a military officer through Military, Academic and character development. Since its establishment, the NDA has contributed towards maintenance of peace in the country and abroad. This research attempts to examine the history of Nigerian Defence Academy from 1964-2006. The research is divided into five chapters. Chapter one gives the general background of the Nigerian Defence Academy.

1.2 Statement of the Problem

Despite its pivotal role, there has been limited comprehensive research documenting the evolution, challenges, and achievements of the Nigerian Defence Academy from its inception in 1964 to 2006. Understanding this history is vital for appreciating its impact on Nigeria's military and national development.

1.3 Objectives of the Study

The main objective of this study is to determine the historical development and impact of the Nigerian Defence Academy from 1964 to 2006. Specific objectives include:

i. To evaluate the impact of the Nigerian Defence Academy on the Nigerian Armed Forces.

ii. To determine the challenges faced by the Nigerian Defence Academy during this period.

iii. To find out the contributions of the Nigerian Defence Academy to Nigeria's national development.

1.4 Research Questions

i. What is the impact of the Nigerian Defence Academy on the Nigerian Armed Forces?

ii. What are the challenges faced by the Nigerian Defence Academy from 1964 to 2006?

iii. How does the Nigerian Defence Academy contribute to Nigeria's national development?

1.5 Research Hypotheses

Hypothesis I

H0: There is no significant impact of the Nigerian Defence Academy on the Nigerian Armed Forces.

H1: There is a significant impact of the Nigerian Defence Academy on the Nigerian Armed Forces.

Hypothesis II

H0: There is no significant challenge faced by the Nigerian Defence Academy from 1964 to 2006.

H2: There are significant challenges faced by the Nigerian Defence Academy from 1964 to 2006.

Hypothesis III

H0: There is no significant contribution of the Nigerian Defence Academy to Nigeria's national development.

H3: There is a significant contribution of the Nigerian Defence Academy to Nigeria's national development.

1.6 Significance of the Study

This study is significant as it provides a comprehensive history of the Nigerian Defence Academy, highlighting its role in military and national development. It will serve as a valuable resource for military historians, policymakers, and scholars interested in military education and its impact on national security. Additionally, it will help inform future strategies for military training and development in Nigeria.

1.7 Scope of the Study

The study covers the history of the Nigerian Defence Academy from its establishment in 1964 until 2006. It focuses on the academy's impact on the Nigerian Armed Forces, the challenges it faced, and its contributions to national development.

1.8 Limitations of the Study

The study may be limited by the availability and accessibility of archival materials and records. Additionally, there may be challenges in obtaining firsthand accounts and testimonials from individuals who were directly involved with the Nigerian Defence Academy during the specified period. The scope of the study is confined to the period between 1964 and 2006, and it does not include developments beyond this timeframe.

1.9 Definition of Terms

Nigerian Defence Academy (NDA): A military institution established in 1964 to train officers for the Nigerian Armed Forces.
