The Effect of Room Adjacency on User Convenience in Residential Buildings

Abstract

Room adjacency is an important aspect of residential planning that influences how conveniently occupants can move between spaces and perform daily activities. The physical proximity and connectivity of rooms such as living areas, kitchens, bedrooms, bathrooms, dining spaces, and service areas can determine the efficiency of household routines. Poorly planned adjacencies may result in unnecessary movement, functional conflicts, reduced privacy, and inconvenience for residents. Assessing room adjacency is therefore essential for improving the functional quality and usability of residential buildings. This study examines the effect of room adjacency on user convenience in residential buildings by evaluating the relationships between frequently used spaces. It considers the proximity, accessibility, connectivity, and sequence of rooms in relation to common household activities. Particular attention is given to relationships between living and dining spaces, kitchens and dining areas, bedrooms and bathrooms, entrances and living spaces, and service areas. These relationships are assessed to determine how effectively residential layouts support everyday movement and activities. The research further investigates how appropriate room adjacency can reduce unnecessary travel and improve circulation efficiency. Spaces that are frequently used together should ideally have direct and convenient connections, while spaces with conflicting activities may require greater separation. The study considers circulation routes, door positions, corridor arrangements, and spatial transitions as factors that influence the convenience of moving between adjacent rooms. The relationship between room adjacency and overall floor-plan organization is also examined. In addition to movement convenience, the study considers the effects of room adjacency on privacy, noise control, and household interaction. The proximity of bedrooms to living areas, kitchens, staircases, or service spaces can influence acoustic and visual privacy. Similarly, appropriate adjacency between social spaces can encourage household interaction and support shared activities. The assessment therefore recognizes that effective room adjacency requires a balance between convenience, functional compatibility, privacy, and social requirements. Challenges in achieving effective room adjacency may include limited floor areas, irregular building forms, structural constraints, household size, cultural preferences, and competing functional requirements. Inadequate relationships between spaces can lead to inefficient circulation, disturbances between activities, and underutilization of certain rooms. Identifying these challenges can provide useful information for improving existing residential layouts and guiding the planning of new housing developments. The study aims to establish the relationship between room adjacency and user convenience in residential buildings and to identify spatial relationships that support efficient household activities. Its findings are expected to assist architects and residential designers in developing layouts that minimize unnecessary movement while maintaining appropriate privacy, comfort, and functional separation. The study contributes to user-centred residential architecture by emphasizing room adjacency as an important determinant of convenience, spatial efficiency, and overall residential quality.
