Impact of Workplace Rights Education on Adults’ Ability to Use Formal Grievance Procedures
Abstract
Workplace rights education provides adults with knowledge about their rights, responsibilities, and available procedures for addressing workplace concerns. Formal grievance procedures are established processes through which employees can report and seek resolution for complaints or disputes arising within the workplace. Limited knowledge of these procedures may make it difficult for adults to identify appropriate channels, prepare complaints, or follow required steps. This study therefore aims to examine the impact of workplace rights education on adults’ ability to use formal grievance procedures. Workplace rights education can expose adults to information about workplace policies, complaint channels, reporting requirements, documentation, and appropriate procedures for raising concerns. Through discussions, case studies, role-play activities, guided exercises, and analysis of workplace scenarios, adult learners can develop practical knowledge of how formal grievances are initiated and processed. These educational activities can help adults understand the sequence of actions involved in using established grievance mechanisms. Adults’ ability to use formal grievance procedures involves identifying the appropriate grievance channel, understanding applicable requirements, preparing relevant information, submitting a complaint through the proper process, and following subsequent procedural steps. Workplace rights education can strengthen these abilities by providing adults with practical opportunities to examine grievance scenarios and practise appropriate responses. Improved knowledge may enable adults to approach workplace complaints more confidently and use available procedures appropriately. The study will adopt a descriptive survey research design. The population will comprise selected adult learners in the study area, from whom an appropriate sample will be selected using a suitable sampling technique. Data will be collected using a structured questionnaire and practical scenario-based assessment items designed to measure exposure to workplace rights education and adults’ ability to use formal grievance procedures. The instrument will be validated by experts, while its reliability will be established before administration. Data collected will be analysed using appropriate descriptive and inferential statistical techniques. The study is expected to establish that workplace rights education has a positive impact on adults’ ability to use formal grievance procedures. Adults exposed to relevant educational activities are expected to demonstrate improved understanding of appropriate grievance channels, required documentation, reporting steps, and follow-up procedures. The findings may also indicate that practical case studies and role-play activities can strengthen adults’ ability to apply workplace rights knowledge in grievance situations. The study may have implications for the teaching and learning of workplace rights within adult education programmes. Adult educators may need to emphasize practical application rather than relying solely on theoretical explanations of employment rights. Case studies, simulated grievance scenarios, guided discussions, and practical exercises can help learners understand how formal procedures operate and develop confidence in using appropriate workplace channels. The findings may benefit adult learners, adult educators, employees, workplace learning providers, labour-related organisations, and employers. Adults may become better equipped to recognize appropriate avenues for addressing workplace concerns, while educators may gain useful strategies for teaching workplace rights and procedural knowledge. Organisations may also benefit from employees having clearer understanding of established mechanisms for reporting and resolving workplace grievances. The study recommends that adult education programmes should incorporate practical workplace rights education that focuses on the use of formal grievance procedures. Adult educators should employ case studies, role-play, guided interpretation of workplace policies, and scenario-based exercises to strengthen learners’ procedural knowledge. Relevant organisations should also provide accessible information about grievance channels and requirements. The study concludes that workplace rights education can contribute meaningfully to improving adults’ ability to use formal grievance procedures when learning is practical, clear, and relevant to workplace experiences.
