Impact of Literacy Programmes on Adult Learners’ Confidence in Using Written Materials

Abstract

Literacy programmes are organized educational activities designed to develop adults’ abilities in reading, writing, comprehension, and the practical use of written information, while confidence in using written materials refers to the extent to which adult learners feel capable and comfortable reading, understanding, completing, and applying information presented in written form. Confidence is important in adult learning because learners who feel capable of handling written materials are more likely to engage with educational, social, economic, and community information. However, limited literacy skills and previous educational experiences may reduce adults’ confidence when dealing with written materials. Therefore, this study will examine the impact of literacy programmes on adult learners’ confidence in using written materials. Literacy programmes provide structured learning experiences through activities such as reading practice, writing exercises, vocabulary development, comprehension tasks, guided interpretation, and the use of practical written materials. These programmes may expose adult learners to notices, forms, instructions, labels, letters, short passages, and other materials commonly encountered in everyday life. Regular practice and supportive instruction can provide learners with opportunities to develop their literacy abilities while becoming more comfortable with written information. Confidence in using written materials involves learners’ belief in their ability to read, understand, interpret, complete, and apply information presented in written form. Adult learners may need this confidence when reading educational materials, completing applications, interpreting instructions, keeping records, reading notices, or handling written information in their communities and workplaces. Participation in literacy programmes may therefore help learners develop both practical literacy abilities and greater confidence in dealing with written materials. The study will adopt a quantitative research design. The population will comprise adult learners enrolled in selected literacy programmes. Data will be collected using a structured questionnaire and a practical written-materials task designed to measure learners’ participation in literacy programmes and their confidence in using written materials. The instruments will be subjected to appropriate validity and reliability procedures before administration. Data collected will be analyzed using descriptive and inferential statistical techniques, while the relevant hypothesis will be tested at a 0.05 level of significance. The study is expected to establish that literacy programmes have a significant impact on adult learners’ confidence in using written materials. Adult learners who participate regularly in literacy programmes are expected to demonstrate greater confidence in reading, interpreting, completing, and applying different forms of written information. The study may also establish that repeated practice and exposure to relevant literacy activities can reduce learners’ hesitation and increase their willingness to engage with written materials. The findings will have implications for teaching and learning in adult education. Adult educators may need to create supportive learning environments where learners can practise using written materials without fear of making mistakes. Practical exercises involving forms, notices, instructions, letters, labels, and short reading passages may help learners develop both competence and confidence. Encouraging feedback and gradual progression from simple to more complex materials may also support learners’ confidence development. The study will be significant to adult learners, adult educators, literacy programme coordinators, community education providers, curriculum planners, and policymakers. Adult learners may benefit from increased confidence when interacting with written information in everyday situations. Adult educators and programme coordinators may gain useful information for improving literacy instruction, while curriculum planners and policymakers may use the findings to strengthen literacy programmes that address both skill development and learners’ confidence. The study recommends that literacy programmes should provide regular opportunities for adult learners to use practical written materials that are relevant to their everyday experiences. Adult educators should combine reading and writing activities with supportive feedback, guided practice, and learner-centred approaches that encourage active participation. The study concludes that effective literacy programmes can improve adult learners’ confidence in using written materials and support their greater participation in educational, social, economic, and community activities.
