Impact of Workplace Communication Education on Adults’ Ability to Report Work-Related Concerns
Abstract
Workplace communication education plays an important role in helping adults develop the knowledge and skills required to communicate effectively within their work environments. The ability to report work-related concerns enables employees to communicate issues such as unsafe conditions, workplace conflicts, operational problems, inappropriate behaviour, and other matters that may require attention. When adults lack appropriate communication skills, they may experience difficulties expressing concerns clearly or directing them to the appropriate person. This study therefore seeks to examine the impact of workplace communication education on adults’ ability to report work-related concerns. Workplace communication education involves learning how to communicate information clearly, respectfully, and appropriately within an employment setting. It may include instruction on verbal communication, written communication, active listening, professional language, appropriate reporting channels, and the organization of relevant information. Practical activities such as role-playing, workplace scenarios, guided discussions, and report-writing exercises can help adults develop confidence and competence in communicating workplace concerns. Adults’ ability to report work-related concerns refers to their capacity to identify issues that require attention, communicate relevant information accurately, and present concerns through appropriate workplace channels. Effective reporting requires individuals to provide clear descriptions of the issue, relevant details, and appropriate supporting information. Workplace communication education is expected to strengthen these abilities by improving adults’ understanding of professional communication practices and appropriate reporting procedures. The study will adopt a suitable quantitative research design. The population will comprise selected adult learners or workers, from whom a representative sample will be obtained. Data will be collected using a structured questionnaire and an assessment of participants’ ability to communicate and report work-related concerns. The collected data will be analysed using appropriate descriptive and inferential statistical techniques to determine the impact of workplace communication education on the identified ability. The study is expected to establish that adults exposed to workplace communication education demonstrate improved ability to report work-related concerns clearly and appropriately. It is also expected that participants will show better understanding of how to organize information, communicate concerns professionally, and select suitable channels for reporting workplace issues. These improvements may contribute to more effective communication between employees and workplace management. The findings are expected to have implications for adult education by emphasizing the importance of practical workplace communication skills in adult learning programmes. Facilitators can incorporate workplace scenarios, role-playing exercises, simulated reporting activities, and practical writing tasks to help learners develop confidence in reporting concerns. The study will also be beneficial to adult learners, employees, workplace trainers, employers, and organisations seeking to strengthen communication and effective issue reporting. The study recommends that workplace communication education should be integrated into relevant adult learning and employee development programmes, with emphasis on practical reporting skills and professional communication. Educators and trainers should provide opportunities for learners to practise communicating different types of workplace concerns through realistic scenarios. It is concluded that effective workplace communication education can improve adults’ ability to report work-related concerns and contribute to clearer, more constructive communication within work environments.
