Impact of Workplace Bullying Education on Adults’ Ability to Identify Bullying Behaviours

Abstract

Workplace bullying education provides adults with knowledge and awareness needed to recognize inappropriate, repeated, or harmful behaviours that may occur in workplace settings. The ability to identify bullying behaviours involves distinguishing bullying from ordinary workplace disagreements, recognizing patterns of intimidation, humiliation, exclusion, verbal abuse, or other harmful conduct, and understanding when such behaviours may require attention. Limited awareness may make it difficult for adults to recognize bullying or respond appropriately. This study therefore aims to examine the impact of workplace bullying education on adults’ ability to identify bullying behaviours. Workplace bullying education can introduce adults to common forms, characteristics, and indicators of bullying through structured lessons, discussions, case studies, videos, role-play, and workplace scenarios. Learners can be guided to examine different behaviours and distinguish repeated harmful conduct from legitimate workplace feedback, disagreements, or performance management. Practical learning activities can help adults develop clearer knowledge of behaviours that may constitute workplace bullying. Adults’ ability to identify bullying behaviours involves recognizing relevant behavioural patterns, distinguishing bullying from ordinary workplace interactions, and identifying situations that may require appropriate reporting or support. Workplace bullying education can strengthen these abilities by providing adults with realistic examples and opportunities to analyse different workplace situations. Improved identification skills may help adults recognize problematic behaviours earlier and understand appropriate avenues for seeking assistance. The study will adopt a descriptive survey research design. The population will comprise selected adult learners in the study area, from whom an appropriate sample will be selected using a suitable sampling technique. Data will be collected using a structured questionnaire and scenario-based assessment items designed to measure exposure to workplace bullying education and adults’ ability to identify bullying behaviours. The instrument will be validated by experts, while its reliability will be established before administration. Data collected will be analysed using appropriate descriptive and inferential statistical techniques. The study is expected to establish that workplace bullying education has a positive impact on adults’ ability to identify bullying behaviours. Adults exposed to relevant educational activities are expected to demonstrate improved ability to recognize different bullying behaviours and distinguish them from ordinary workplace disagreements or legitimate managerial actions. The findings may also indicate that scenario-based activities and practical examples are effective for strengthening adults’ recognition of workplace bullying. The study may have implications for the teaching and learning of workplace behaviour and employee awareness within adult education programmes. Adult educators may need to incorporate practical workplace scenarios, discussions, role-play, and case analysis into instruction. These approaches can help learners examine different behaviours critically and develop a clearer understanding of inappropriate workplace conduct. The findings may benefit adult learners, adult educators, employees, employers, workplace learning providers, and organisations concerned with healthy workplace environments. Adults may become better equipped to recognize potentially harmful workplace behaviours, while educators may gain practical approaches for teaching workplace awareness. Organisations may also benefit from employees having greater awareness of behaviours that can negatively affect workplace relationships and well-being. The study recommends that adult education programmes should incorporate workplace bullying education using practical and realistic learning activities. Adult educators should employ case studies, scenario analysis, guided discussions, and role-play to strengthen learners’ ability to identify bullying behaviours. Organisations should also provide clear information about unacceptable workplace conduct and available reporting channels. The study concludes that workplace bullying education can contribute meaningfully to improving adults’ ability to identify bullying behaviours when instruction is practical, clear, and relevant to workplace experiences.
