Impact of Vocational Education on Adults’ Knowledge of Tiling Techniques
Vocational education provides adults with opportunities to acquire practical knowledge and skills that can enhance their participation in building, maintenance, and other income-generating activities. Tiling is an important practical construction activity that involves knowledge of tile types, surface preparation, measurement, adhesive or mortar application, tile placement, spacing, cutting, alignment, and finishing. However, some adults may have inadequate knowledge of appropriate tiling techniques due to limited access to structured vocational learning opportunities. This study therefore examines the impact of vocational education on adults’ knowledge of tiling techniques. Vocational education provides practical learning experiences through demonstrations, guided instruction, supervised practice, discussions, and the use of appropriate tools and materials. In tiling education, adults can learn how to identify suitable tiles and tools, prepare surfaces, measure work areas, mix and apply adhesives, position tiles correctly, maintain uniform spacing, cut tiles safely, and achieve proper alignment and finishing. These learning experiences can enable adults to connect theoretical knowledge with practical activities and develop a clearer understanding of the procedures involved in effective tiling. Adults’ knowledge of tiling techniques refers to their understanding of the materials, tools, procedures, measurements, and safety practices required for carrying out tiling activities effectively. Adequate knowledge is important because poor surface preparation, inaccurate measurements, improper adhesive application, uneven spacing, and incorrect tile alignment can affect the quality and durability of tiled surfaces. Vocational education may therefore improve adults’ knowledge by providing structured practical instruction and opportunities to observe, practise, and understand appropriate tiling procedures. The study will adopt a suitable descriptive survey research design. The population will comprise adults participating in selected vocational education programmes, from which an appropriate sample will be selected using a suitable sampling procedure. Data will be collected through a structured questionnaire and an appropriate knowledge assessment designed to measure adults’ knowledge of tiling techniques. The research instruments will be subjected to appropriate validation procedures, while their reliability will be established before administration. Data collected will be analysed using relevant descriptive and inferential statistical techniques to determine the impact of vocational education on adults’ knowledge of tiling techniques. The study is expected to establish that participation in vocational education has a positive impact on adults’ knowledge of tiling techniques. Adults exposed to structured vocational learning are expected to demonstrate improved knowledge of tile selection, surface preparation, measurement, adhesive application, tile placement, spacing, cutting, alignment, and finishing. The findings may further indicate that demonstrations and supervised practical activities provide adults with better opportunities to understand and retain knowledge of tiling procedures. The study will conclude that vocational education can serve as an effective avenue for improving adults’ knowledge of practical tiling techniques. It will recommend that vocational education programmes provide adequate tiling tools and materials, practical demonstrations, supervised hands-on activities, and appropriate safety guidance. Strengthening these learning opportunities can enhance adults’ practical knowledge, support vocational skill development, and improve their ability to apply appropriate tiling techniques in household, construction, and income-generating activities.
