Impact of Tourism Education on Adults’ Ability to Identify Local Tourism Resources
Abstract
Tourism resources refer to natural, cultural, historical, recreational, and community-based features that can attract visitors and support tourism activities. Adults’ ability to identify local tourism resources is important because recognizing available attractions can encourage community participation, support tourism planning, promote cultural preservation, and create opportunities for local development. Limited knowledge of tourism resources may result in underutilization of valuable attractions and reduced community involvement in tourism activities. Tourism Education can provide adults with relevant knowledge and practical experiences that enable them to recognize, classify, and appreciate tourism resources within their communities. This study therefore seeks to examine the impact of Tourism Education on adults’ ability to identify local tourism resources. Tourism Education introduces adults to different categories and characteristics of tourism resources, including natural attractions, historical sites, cultural practices, festivals, traditional crafts, recreational facilities, and other features of tourism value. Through field visits, guided observation, community mapping, discussions, case studies, and practical identification exercises, adults can learn how to recognize resources that may have tourism potential. Such learning experiences can help participants develop greater awareness of their local environment and cultural heritage. By connecting theoretical knowledge with practical observation, Tourism Education may strengthen adults’ ability to identify and describe tourism resources within their communities. Adults’ ability to identify local tourism resources involves recognizing relevant natural, cultural, historical, recreational, and community assets and distinguishing them from ordinary community features. This ability requires knowledge of the characteristics that make a resource potentially valuable for tourism, as well as awareness of its location, significance, and possible uses. Tourism Education may improve this ability by providing adults with structured opportunities to observe, classify, discuss, and document local tourism resources. Greater competence in identifying these resources may enable adults to participate more effectively in tourism planning, promotion, conservation, and community development activities. The study will adopt a suitable descriptive survey research design. The population will comprise adults participating in selected Tourism Education programmes, from which an appropriate sample will be selected using a suitable sampling procedure. Data will be collected through a structured questionnaire and an appropriate practical identification assessment designed to measure participants’ exposure to Tourism Education and their ability to identify local tourism resources. The research instruments will be subjected to appropriate validation procedures, while their reliability will be established before administration. Data collected will be analyzed using relevant descriptive and inferential statistical techniques to determine the impact of Tourism Education on adults’ ability to identify local tourism resources. The study is expected to establish that Tourism Education has a positive impact on adults’ ability to identify local tourism resources. It is expected that adults exposed to relevant tourism learning experiences may demonstrate stronger ability to recognize natural attractions, cultural resources, historical features, recreational facilities, and other tourism-related assets within their communities. The findings may also indicate that practical activities such as field observation, community mapping, and resource identification exercises can strengthen adults’ awareness of local tourism potential. The findings may have important implications for Adult Education practitioners and tourism educators. Tourism learning programmes can incorporate field visits, community resource mapping, observation exercises, local heritage documentation, and practical identification activities that allow adults to interact directly with tourism resources. Facilitators can encourage learners to document local attractions and examine their cultural, recreational, historical, or natural significance. These approaches may make Tourism Education more practical and strengthen adults’ ability to recognize resources that could contribute to responsible local tourism development. The study will be significant to adult learners, Adult Education practitioners, tourism educators, community leaders, cultural organizations, tourism businesses, and policymakers interested in local tourism development. It is recommended that Tourism Education programmes provide practical learning opportunities that expose adults to local tourism resources and strengthen their ability to identify and appreciate them. The study concludes that Tourism Education has the potential to improve adults’ ability to identify local tourism resources by providing relevant knowledge, practical observation, and experiential learning opportunities.
