Abstract
Technology education plays an important role in helping adults understand emerging digital technologies that increasingly influence everyday life, workplaces, homes, and communities. Internet of Things (IoT) devices are physical devices connected to the internet that can collect, exchange, process, or respond to data, including smart appliances, wearable devices, connected security systems, environmental sensors, and other network-enabled equipment. Adults’ understanding of IoT devices is important because effective interaction with these technologies requires awareness of their functions, applications, benefits, and potential limitations. This study will examine the impact of technology education on adults’ understanding of Internet of Things devices, with the purpose of determining whether relevant educational exposure can improve adults’ knowledge of IoT technologies. Technology education provides adults with opportunities to acquire technological knowledge through demonstrations, practical activities, discussions, guided experimentation, and experience-based learning. In relation to IoT devices, educational activities can introduce learners to the basic concepts of connected devices, sensors, internet connectivity, data collection, device communication, and automated responses. Adults may also be exposed to practical examples of IoT applications in homes, agriculture, transportation, healthcare, security, energy management, and environmental monitoring. Through demonstrations and hands-on activities, technology education can make the operation and practical uses of IoT devices easier for adults to understand. Adults’ understanding of Internet of Things devices refers to their ability to identify IoT devices, explain their basic functions, recognize how connected devices communicate and exchange information, and identify practical applications of IoT technology. Adequate understanding can help adults interact more confidently with connected technologies and recognize issues relating to device security, privacy, connectivity, and responsible use. The population will comprise adults participating in selected Adult Education or technology-related learning programmes, from which an appropriate sample will be selected using a suitable sampling procedure. Data will be collected through a structured questionnaire and an appropriate knowledge assessment designed to measure participants’ understanding of Internet of Things devices. The research instruments will be subjected to appropriate validation procedures, while their reliability will be established before administration. Data collected will be analysed using relevant descriptive and inferential statistical techniques to determine the impact of technology education on adults’ understanding of Internet of Things devices. The study is expected to establish that technology education has a positive impact on adults’ understanding of Internet of Things devices. Adults who participate in relevant educational activities are expected to demonstrate improved knowledge of connected devices, sensors, data exchange, automation, and practical IoT applications. The study may also establish that demonstrations and hands-on learning activities provide effective opportunities for adults to understand otherwise unfamiliar technological concepts. Such findings would emphasize the importance of technology education in preparing adults to engage with connected technologies that are becoming increasingly common in modern environments. The findings will have implications for Adult Education practitioners, technology educators, programme facilitators, and curriculum developers. Relevant learning programmes may need to incorporate contemporary technology topics that expose adults to the principles and applications of connected devices. Facilitators can use demonstrations, visual materials, practical exercises, simulations, and familiar examples to explain how IoT devices operate and how they are applied in everyday settings. Such approaches can help reduce technological knowledge gaps while also encouraging adults to consider important issues relating to privacy, security, responsible usage, and digital connectivity. The study will be significant to adult learners, educators, technology users, community organizations, technology developers, and other stakeholders interested in digital inclusion and technological awareness. It will provide useful information on how technology education can strengthen adults’ understanding of Internet of Things devices and prepare them for increasing interaction with connected technologies. The study will recommend the inclusion of relevant IoT concepts in appropriate adult and technology education programmes and encourage practical learning approaches that connect emerging technologies with everyday experiences. It will conclude that strengthening adults’ understanding through technology education can promote greater technological awareness and more informed engagement with Internet of Things devices.
