Impact of Survey Literacy Education on Adults’ Ability to Understand Survey Findings

Abstract

Survey literacy education is important in helping adults develop the knowledge and skills required to understand information generated from surveys and questionnaires. Survey findings are commonly presented through percentages, frequencies, tables, charts, summaries, and written interpretations, yet adults with limited survey literacy may find it difficult to understand what such findings communicate. Improved ability to interpret survey results can support informed decision-making in personal, workplace, community, and educational settings. This study therefore seeks to examine the impact of survey literacy education on adults’ ability to understand survey findings. Survey literacy education involves providing adults with knowledge about the basic principles and presentation of survey information. It may include instruction on understanding survey questions, identifying respondents and samples, interpreting frequencies and percentages, reading tables and charts, and distinguishing findings from opinions or assumptions. Practical learning activities using simple survey examples can help adults develop familiarity with common methods of presenting and communicating survey results. Adults’ ability to understand survey findings refers to their capacity to correctly interpret information presented from collected survey data and explain its meaning in relation to the issue being investigated. This includes recognizing major patterns, comparing reported values, understanding percentages, and drawing conclusions that are consistent with the information presented. Survey literacy education is expected to strengthen these abilities by giving adults practical knowledge for examining and interpreting survey findings. The study will adopt a suitable quantitative research design. The population will comprise selected adult learners, from whom a representative sample will be drawn. Data will be collected using a structured questionnaire and a survey-finding interpretation assessment designed to measure participants’ ability to understand tables, percentages, charts, and written survey summaries. The data obtained will be analysed using appropriate descriptive and inferential statistical techniques to determine the impact of survey literacy education on the identified ability. The study is expected to establish that adults exposed to survey literacy education demonstrate improved ability to understand survey findings compared with those with limited exposure to such education. Participants are also expected to demonstrate better ability to interpret percentages, compare survey results, identify important patterns, and understand conclusions presented from survey data. These improvements may enable adults to make more informed judgments when encountering survey-based information. The findings are expected to have implications for adult education by demonstrating the value of incorporating practical data-interpretation activities into adult learning programmes. Educators can use simple survey datasets, tables, charts, and real-life examples to help learners develop confidence in interpreting survey findings. The study will be beneficial to adult learners, community educators, workplace learners, researchers, programme facilitators, and individuals who regularly encounter survey-based information. The study recommends that survey literacy education should be incorporated into relevant adult learning programmes, with emphasis on practical interpretation of percentages, tables, charts, and survey summaries. Educators should provide learners with opportunities to examine survey findings and explain their meaning using realistic examples. It is concluded that survey literacy education can improve adults’ ability to understand survey findings and contribute to more informed interpretation of information derived from surveys.
