Impact of Safety-Label Education on Adults’ Ability to Interpret Hazard Symbols
Abstract
Safety labels provide important information that helps individuals recognize potential dangers associated with chemicals, equipment, household products, and other hazardous materials. However, limited understanding of safety labels and hazard symbols may affect adults’ ability to identify risks and respond appropriately to warnings. Safety-label education can provide learners with the knowledge needed to understand common symbols, warning signs, and precautionary information. This study therefore seeks to examine the impact of safety-label education on adults’ ability to interpret hazard symbols. Safety-label education involves teaching adults how to recognize, distinguish, and understand commonly used hazard symbols and the safety information associated with them. The education may include explanations of symbol meanings, demonstrations using labelled products, practical identification exercises, and discussions of appropriate safety precautions. Through repeated exposure and practical learning activities, adults can develop greater familiarity with hazard symbols and their meanings. Adults’ ability to interpret hazard symbols refers to their capacity to correctly identify symbols, explain the hazards they represent, and understand the safety actions associated with them. Effective interpretation is important because hazard symbols communicate warnings in a concise visual form, particularly where written information may be difficult to understand quickly. Safety-label education is therefore expected to improve adults’ recognition and interpretation of these symbols. The study will adopt a suitable quantitative research design to examine the relationship between safety-label education and adults’ ability to interpret hazard symbols. The population will consist of selected adult learners, from whom a representative sample will be drawn. Data will be collected using a structured questionnaire and a hazard-symbol interpretation assessment designed to measure participants’ knowledge and ability to identify common safety symbols. The collected data will be analysed using appropriate descriptive and inferential statistical techniques. The study is expected to establish that adults who receive safety-label education demonstrate better ability to recognize and correctly interpret hazard symbols than those with limited exposure to such education. It is also expected that practical demonstrations, visual learning activities, and repeated identification exercises will contribute to improved understanding of symbol meanings and associated safety precautions. The findings are expected to have implications for adult education practice by encouraging the inclusion of practical safety-label learning activities in relevant adult education programmes. Facilitators may use real product labels, visual demonstrations, symbol-matching activities, and practical exercises to strengthen learners’ understanding. Such approaches can make safety education more practical, understandable, and relevant to adults’ everyday experiences. The study will be beneficial to adult learners, adult education facilitators, community educators, workplace trainers, safety educators, and organisations involved in public safety education. Improved ability to interpret hazard symbols can help adults make more informed decisions when handling potentially hazardous products and responding to safety warnings. The findings may also provide useful information for developing accessible safety education materials. The study recommends that safety-label education should be incorporated into relevant adult learning programmes, with greater emphasis on practical demonstrations and repeated exposure to commonly encountered hazard symbols. Educators should use simple explanations and visually oriented learning activities to improve comprehension. It is concluded that appropriate safety-label education can strengthen adults’ ability to interpret hazard symbols and support safer decision-making in everyday and workplace environments.
