Impact of Road Safety Education on Adults’ Knowledge of Pedestrian Safety Practices

Abstract

Pedestrian safety practices are the behaviours and precautions that help individuals move safely when walking along, crossing, or interacting with roadways. Knowledge of these practices is important because pedestrians regularly encounter vehicles, traffic signals, road signs, junctions, crossings, and other road-use conditions that require appropriate safety decisions. Road safety education provides opportunities for adults to acquire knowledge about responsible road use and appropriate pedestrian behaviour. This study will examine the impact of road safety education on adults’ knowledge of pedestrian safety practices, with emphasis on how educational experiences can improve adults’ understanding of safe pedestrian behaviour and road-use precautions. Road safety education involves structured learning activities designed to increase awareness and understanding of road rules, traffic signs, hazards, and appropriate behaviours among road users. In relation to pedestrian safety, adults can be introduced to practices such as using designated pedestrian crossings where available, observing traffic signals, paying attention to approaching vehicles, walking in appropriate areas, and avoiding behaviours that may increase exposure to road hazards. Learning activities may include demonstrations, visual materials, discussions, road-safety scenarios, and practical observation exercises. Such approaches can help adults connect safety information with situations they encounter in their everyday movement within their communities. Adults’ knowledge of pedestrian safety practices refers to their understanding of the rules, precautions, behaviours, and safety considerations that pedestrians should observe when using or crossing roads. This knowledge enables adults to recognize potential hazards, understand relevant road signs and signals, and make safer decisions when navigating road environments. Road safety education can strengthen this knowledge by exposing learners to practical examples and opportunities to discuss appropriate responses to different pedestrian situations. Improved knowledge may contribute to greater awareness of road hazards and encourage adults to apply appropriate pedestrian safety practices in their daily activities. The study will adopt a suitable descriptive survey research design. The population will comprise adults participating in selected Adult Education programmes, from which an appropriate sample will be selected using a suitable sampling procedure. Data will be collected through a structured questionnaire and an appropriate knowledge assessment designed to measure participants’ knowledge of pedestrian safety practices. The research instruments will be subjected to appropriate validation procedures, while their reliability will be established before administration. Data collected will be analysed using relevant descriptive and inferential statistical techniques to determine the impact of road safety education on adults’ knowledge of pedestrian safety practices. The study is expected to establish that participation in road safety education contributes positively to adults’ knowledge of pedestrian safety practices. Adults exposed to relevant educational activities are expected to demonstrate improved understanding of pedestrian crossings, traffic signals, road signs, hazard recognition, and appropriate pedestrian behaviour. The study may also establish that practical demonstrations, visual materials, and scenario-based activities improve adults’ ability to recognize potentially hazardous road situations and identify appropriate safety practices for different pedestrian environments. The study will have implications for Adult Education practitioners, road-safety educators, community educators, facilitators, and programme developers. It will emphasize the importance of incorporating practical road-safety activities into relevant adult learning programmes. Facilitators may use traffic signs, road-safety illustrations, demonstrations, simulated crossing situations, and community-based observations to make pedestrian safety concepts easier to understand. These approaches can encourage active participation and help adults develop practical knowledge that can be applied when walking or crossing roads in everyday situations. The study will be significant to adult learners, Adult Education practitioners, road-safety organizations, transportation agencies, community organizations, and researchers interested in functional safety education. It will recommend increased integration of pedestrian safety education into relevant adult learning and community education programmes. The study will conclude that effective road safety education can play an important role in improving adults’ knowledge of pedestrian safety practices and strengthening their awareness of appropriate behaviours and precautions for safer interaction with road environments.
