Impact of Risk-Communication Education on Adults’ Interpretation of Probability Information
Abstract
Risk-communication education is important in helping adults understand information that describes uncertainty, likelihood, and possible outcomes. Probability information is commonly presented through percentages, ratios, frequencies, probability statements, and other numerical or verbal forms, particularly when communicating risks associated with everyday decisions. Adults who have difficulty interpreting such information may misunderstand the likelihood of an event and make inappropriate judgments. This study therefore seeks to examine the impact of risk-communication education on adults’ interpretation of probability information. Risk-communication education involves providing adults with knowledge and practical skills for understanding, comparing, and communicating information about uncertain outcomes. It may include instruction on probability expressions, percentages, frequency information, risk comparisons, and the use of simple visual or numerical representations. Practical examples, guided discussions, and interpretation exercises can help adults become more familiar with different ways of presenting probability information. Adults’ interpretation of probability information refers to their ability to correctly understand numerical and verbal descriptions of likelihood and uncertainty. This includes interpreting percentages, comparing probabilities, understanding relative likelihood, and drawing conclusions that are consistent with the information presented. Risk-communication education is expected to strengthen this ability by improving adults’ understanding of probability language and numerical risk information. The study will adopt a suitable quantitative research design. The population will comprise selected adult learners, from whom a representative sample will be drawn. Data will be collected using a structured questionnaire and a probability-information interpretation assessment containing numerical and verbal risk statements for participants to examine. The data obtained will be analysed using appropriate descriptive and inferential statistical techniques to determine the impact of risk-communication education on adults’ interpretation of probability information. The study is expected to establish that adults exposed to risk-communication education demonstrate improved ability to interpret probability information compared with those with limited exposure to such education. Participants are also expected to demonstrate greater ability to understand percentages, compare likelihoods, interpret probability statements, and distinguish between different levels of risk. These improvements may support more accurate understanding of information concerning uncertain events. The findings are expected to have implications for adult education by emphasizing the importance of practical probability and risk-interpretation skills in adult learning programmes. Educators can use realistic examples, probability scales, numerical comparisons, charts, and everyday risk scenarios to help learners develop confidence in interpreting probability information. The study will be beneficial to adult learners, educators, community facilitators, workplace learners, and individuals who regularly encounter information involving likelihood and uncertainty. The study recommends that adult education programmes should incorporate practical risk-communication activities that enable adults to interpret probability information accurately. Educators should provide learners with opportunities to examine percentages, verbal probability statements, and comparative risk information using realistic situations. It is concluded that risk-communication education can improve adults’ interpretation of probability information and contribute to more accurate understanding and informed decision-making in situations involving uncertainty.
