Impact of Resource-Mobilization Education on Adults’ Ability to Identify Community Resources
Abstract
Resource-Mobilization Education refers to organized learning that equips adults with knowledge and skills for identifying, assessing, and accessing resources that can support individual and community development, while community resources refer to the human, material, financial, institutional, natural, and informational assets available within a community. The ability to identify community resources is important because adults need to recognize available assets before they can effectively utilize them to address community needs and support development activities. However, some adults may have limited knowledge of the types and locations of resources available within their communities. Therefore, this study aims to examine the impact of Resource-Mobilization Education on adults’ ability to identify community resources. Resource-Mobilization Education exposes adults to concepts and practices relating to resource identification, resource mapping, community asset assessment, information gathering, networking, and resource utilization. Through classroom instruction, workshops, discussions, practical exercises, and community-based activities, adults can learn how to examine their surroundings and recognize available resources. Such educational experiences can help learners identify individuals with useful skills, community organizations, local institutions, facilities, materials, and other assets that may contribute to development activities. The ability to identify community resources involves recognizing available assets, determining their locations, understanding their potential uses, and distinguishing resources that may be relevant to particular community needs. Adults who possess appropriate resource-identification knowledge may be better equipped to examine their communities and recognize useful human, material, financial, institutional, and informational resources. Resource-Mobilization Education can therefore strengthen adults’ ability to identify community resources by providing practical knowledge and skills for systematic community asset identification. The study will adopt a descriptive survey research design. The population will comprise adults participating in selected adult education and community development programmes, from which a representative sample will be selected using an appropriate sampling procedure. Data will be collected using a structured questionnaire designed to measure exposure to Resource-Mobilization Education and adults’ ability to identify community resources. The instrument will be subjected to appropriate validity and reliability procedures before administration. Data collected will be analysed using descriptive statistics and appropriate inferential statistical techniques. The study is expected to establish that Resource-Mobilization Education has a significant positive impact on adults’ ability to identify community resources. Adults who receive relevant resource-mobilization education are expected to demonstrate greater ability to recognize different types of community assets, locate available resources, assess their relevance, and identify resources that can support community activities. The study may further indicate that practical resource-mapping and community assessment activities improve adults’ confidence in recognizing resources within their communities. The findings will have implications for teaching and learning in Adult Education by emphasizing the importance of practical community-resource identification activities. Adult educators may incorporate resource-mapping exercises, community observation, asset identification tasks, group discussions, and practical field activities into relevant programmes. These approaches can help learners connect classroom knowledge with their immediate environment and develop practical skills for identifying resources that may contribute to community development. The study will be beneficial to adult learners, adult educators, community development practitioners, community organizations, local institutions, and policymakers. Adult learners may develop improved abilities to recognize resources within their communities, while educators and community development practitioners may gain useful approaches for teaching resource-identification skills. Community organizations and policymakers may also use the findings to strengthen programmes that encourage adults to recognize and make informed use of locally available assets. The study will recommend that Adult Education programmes incorporate practical Resource-Mobilization Education and community-resource identification activities into relevant courses. Adult educators should provide learners with opportunities to conduct basic resource mapping, identify community assets, examine their potential uses, and organize information about available resources. Community-based learning activities should also be encouraged to improve practical understanding. The study concludes that effective Resource-Mobilization Education can strengthen adults’ ability to identify community resources and provide a useful foundation for informed resource utilization and community development.
