Impact of Research Literacy Education on Adults’ Understanding of Research Designs

Abstract

Research design is an important component of research because it provides the general plan and framework through which a research study is organized and conducted. Understanding research designs enables adults to recognize how researchers structure investigations, select appropriate approaches, gather information, and address research questions. Research Literacy Education can provide adults with the knowledge and skills needed to understand basic research designs and their purposes. This study therefore examines the impact of Research Literacy Education on adults’ understanding of research designs. Research Literacy Education introduces adults to fundamental research concepts and provides opportunities to examine how different research designs are used in research studies. Through structured lessons, guided discussions, practical examples, and analysis of research studies, learners can develop familiarity with concepts such as survey, experimental, correlational, case study, and other commonly used research designs. Learning activities that require adults to compare research designs, identify their purposes, and examine how they relate to research questions can strengthen their understanding of the role of design in the research process. The understanding of research designs involves recognizing the purpose, characteristics, and appropriate applications of different approaches to organizing research. Adults need to distinguish one research design from another and understand why a particular design may be suitable for addressing a specific research problem or question. Research Literacy Education can improve this understanding by exposing learners to practical research examples and encouraging them to examine the connection between research problems, questions, objectives, and research designs. Improved understanding can enable adults to engage more effectively with research reports and make better judgments about how studies are organized. The study will adopt a suitable descriptive survey research design. The population will comprise adult learners participating in selected Adult Education programmes, from which an appropriate sample will be selected using a suitable sampling procedure. Data will be collected through a structured questionnaire and an appropriate assessment designed to measure participants’ understanding of research designs. The research instruments will be subjected to appropriate validation procedures, while their reliability will be established before administration. Data collected will be analyzed using relevant descriptive and inferential statistical techniques to determine the impact of Research Literacy Education on adults’ understanding of research designs. The study is expected to establish that Research Literacy Education has a positive impact on adults’ understanding of research designs. Adults exposed to relevant instruction are expected to demonstrate improved abilities to identify common research designs, explain their basic purposes, distinguish among different designs, and relate research designs to research questions and objectives. The expected findings may further indicate that practical exposure to research examples and comparative activities improves adults’ confidence in interpreting the design components of research studies. The findings are expected to have implications for Adult Education practice and research-literacy development. Adult Education practitioners may need to incorporate practical research-design activities into learning programmes rather than relying primarily on theoretical explanations. Learners can be given opportunities to examine simple research scenarios, identify appropriate designs, compare different approaches, and discuss the reasons for selecting particular designs. Such activities can make research concepts more understandable and help adults develop transferable skills for reading and evaluating research materials. The study will be significant to adult learners, Adult Education practitioners, programme planners, researchers, and other stakeholders interested in strengthening adults’ research competence. It may provide useful evidence on the contribution of Research Literacy Education to adults’ understanding of fundamental research designs and their applications. The study recommends greater integration of practical research-design activities into Adult Education programmes, with emphasis on identifying, comparing, and understanding the purposes of different designs. It concludes that strengthening adults’ understanding of research designs can provide an important foundation for effective engagement with research studies and further development of research-literacy skills.
