Impact of Problem-Solving Education on Adults’ Ability to Evaluate Alternative Solutions
Abstract
Problem-Solving Education is important in developing adults’ ability to examine challenges systematically and make informed decisions about possible ways of addressing them. In everyday life, adults may encounter personal, workplace, educational, financial, and community-related problems for which more than one possible solution exists. The ability to compare available alternatives carefully is therefore necessary for selecting solutions that are appropriate, practical, and likely to address identified problems. Problem-Solving Education can provide adults with knowledge and skills for analyzing situations, generating alternatives, examining consequences, and making reasoned choices. This study therefore seeks to examine the impact of Problem-Solving Education on adults’ ability to evaluate alternative solutions. Problem-Solving Education exposes adults to processes involved in effective problem solving, including identifying problems, gathering relevant information, generating possible solutions, establishing criteria, comparing alternatives, considering consequences, and selecting appropriate courses of action. Through case studies, group discussions, practical exercises, simulations, and problem-based activities, adults can develop opportunities to examine different solutions to the same problem. Such learning experiences can strengthen their ability to move beyond immediate or emotional responses and consider the advantages, limitations, feasibility, and possible consequences associated with available alternatives. Adults’ ability to evaluate alternative solutions refers to their capacity to examine different possible responses to a problem and determine which option best satisfies relevant conditions. This ability involves comparing alternatives, considering available resources, assessing likely consequences, identifying strengths and weaknesses, and applying appropriate criteria before making a decision. Problem-Solving Education may improve this ability by giving adults structured opportunities to analyze alternative responses and justify their choices. Developing this competence can help adults make more thoughtful decisions when faced with complex situations in their personal, occupational, and community lives. The study will adopt a suitable descriptive survey research design. The population will comprise adult learners participating in selected Adult Education programmes, from which an appropriate sample will be selected using a suitable sampling procedure. Data will be collected through a structured questionnaire and an appropriate problem-solving assessment designed to measure participants’ ability to evaluate alternative solutions. The research instruments will be subjected to appropriate validation procedures, while their reliability will be established before administration. Data collected will be analyzed using relevant descriptive and inferential statistical techniques to determine the impact of Problem-Solving Education on adults’ ability to evaluate alternative solutions. The study is expected to establish that Problem-Solving Education has a positive impact on adults’ ability to evaluate alternative solutions. It is anticipated that adults exposed to relevant problem-solving activities will demonstrate improved ability to compare possible responses, identify relevant criteria, consider consequences, and select appropriate alternatives. The study may further establish that practical problem-solving exercises and realistic scenarios provide useful opportunities for adults to strengthen their analytical judgment and develop greater confidence in evaluating different solutions. The findings are expected to have implications for Adult Education practitioners in designing learning experiences that develop practical problem-solving and decision-making competencies. Practitioners may incorporate case studies, simulations, group problem-solving tasks, comparative exercises, and reflective activities that require learners to examine more than one possible solution. These activities can encourage adults to consider evidence, consequences, feasibility, and available resources when evaluating alternatives rather than selecting solutions without adequate consideration. The study will be significant to adult learners, Adult Education practitioners, programme coordinators, workplaces, community organizations, and other stakeholders interested in strengthening adults’ problem-solving competencies. It is expected to recommend greater integration of practical problem-solving activities that require adults to generate, compare, evaluate, and justify alternative solutions. The study concludes that Problem-Solving Education can contribute to adults’ ability to evaluate alternative solutions by developing their analytical, reflective, and decision-making skills for responding effectively to challenges in different areas of life.
