Impact of Presentation Skills Training on Adults’ Public Speaking Performance
Abstract
Presentation skills training refers to structured learning activities designed to develop individuals’ ability to organize, communicate, and deliver information effectively before an audience, while public speaking performance refers to the quality and effectiveness with which an individual communicates ideas orally to an audience. Effective public speaking performance is important for workplace communication, community engagement, educational activities, leadership responsibilities, and professional development. However, some adults may experience difficulties in organizing speech content, communicating ideas clearly, maintaining audience attention, and using appropriate delivery techniques. This study therefore aims to examine the impact of presentation skills training on adults’ public speaking performance. Presentation skills training provides adults with practical learning experiences focused on content organization, speech structure, delivery techniques, audience awareness, verbal communication, non-verbal communication, and effective use of presentation materials. Through demonstrations, individual presentations, group activities, role-playing, practice sessions, and constructive feedback, adults can learn how to prepare and deliver organized presentations. The training also provides opportunities for repeated practice, enabling learners to identify weaknesses in their presentation techniques and improve their overall delivery. Public speaking performance involves the ability to communicate ideas clearly, maintain appropriate voice control, use suitable body language, demonstrate confidence, organize speech content logically, engage an audience, and manage presentation time effectively. Adults with strong public speaking performance can communicate information in a manner that is understandable, organized, and engaging. Presentation skills training can improve these competencies by exposing adults to structured presentation techniques and providing opportunities to practise speaking before an audience. The study will adopt a suitable research design to investigate the impact of presentation skills training on adults’ public speaking performance. The population will comprise selected adult learners, from whom an appropriate sample will be selected using a suitable sampling procedure. Data will be collected using a structured public speaking performance assessment to evaluate participants’ presentation delivery, communication, organization, and audience engagement abilities. The data obtained will be analysed using appropriate descriptive and inferential statistical techniques to determine the impact of presentation skills training on public speaking performance. The study is expected to establish that presentation skills training has a positive impact on adults’ public speaking performance. Adults exposed to the training are expected to demonstrate improved abilities in organizing speech content, communicating ideas clearly, using appropriate verbal and non-verbal techniques, managing presentation time, and engaging audiences. The study is also expected to indicate that repeated practice, demonstrations, and constructive feedback can strengthen adults’ confidence and effectiveness when speaking before an audience. The findings will have implications for the teaching and learning of Adult Education. Adult educators can integrate presentation skills training into adult learning programmes through practical speaking activities and learner-centred instructional approaches. Individual presentations, group presentations, speech exercises, peer assessment, simulated speaking situations, and guided feedback can provide learners with opportunities to practise and improve their public speaking abilities. Such approaches can make learning more practical and support the development of communication competencies required in real-life situations. The study will be beneficial to adult learners, adult educators, community organizations, workplace groups, voluntary associations, and institutions that require effective oral communication. Adult learners may develop greater confidence and competence in communicating before different audiences, while adult educators may gain practical strategies for improving learners’ presentation and speaking abilities. Organizations may also benefit from adults who can communicate ideas clearly and confidently during meetings, training sessions, community activities, and professional engagements. The study recommends that presentation skills training should be incorporated into relevant adult education programmes and supported with regular practical speaking activities. Adult educators should provide opportunities for learners to prepare and deliver presentations, practise verbal and non-verbal communication, manage speaking time, engage audiences, and receive constructive feedback. Realistic presentation tasks should also be used to reinforce learning and improve performance. The study concludes that presentation skills training can contribute significantly to improving adults’ public speaking performance and strengthening their ability to communicate ideas effectively before an audience.
