Impact of Peer Explanation Activities on Conceptual Understanding among Adult Learners
Abstract
Conceptual understanding is an important component of effective adult learning because it enables learners to understand ideas, explain relationships, and apply knowledge to relevant situations. Peer explanation activities involve learners explaining concepts, processes, or ideas to one another during structured learning interactions. However, some adult learners may have difficulties developing clear understanding of concepts when learning depends mainly on instructor explanations. This study therefore aims to examine the impact of peer explanation activities on conceptual understanding among adult learners. Peer explanation activities provide opportunities for learners to discuss learning content and explain concepts using their own words. During these activities, learners may clarify difficult ideas, respond to questions, provide examples, compare interpretations, and correct misunderstandings through interaction with their peers. Explaining information to others also requires learners to organize their own understanding before presenting it. These activities can therefore create an active learning environment in which learners participate directly in the construction and clarification of knowledge. Conceptual understanding refers to the ability to explain concepts accurately, identify relationships among ideas, distinguish related concepts, and apply knowledge to appropriate situations. It goes beyond memorizing isolated facts by requiring learners to understand the meaning and connections within learning content. Peer explanation activities are expected to influence conceptual understanding by encouraging learners to articulate their interpretations, examine alternative explanations, and clarify areas of confusion through peer interaction. The study will adopt a quasi-experimental research design. The population will consist of adult learners enrolled in selected adult education programmes, from which an appropriate sample will be selected. Data will be collected using a conceptual-understanding assessment administered before and after exposure to structured peer explanation activities. The data obtained will be analysed using appropriate descriptive and inferential statistical techniques to determine the impact of peer explanation activities on conceptual understanding among adult learners. The study is expected to establish that adult learners exposed to peer explanation activities demonstrate improved conceptual understanding compared with their performance before the intervention. The findings are expected to show improvements in learners’ ability to explain concepts, identify relationships among ideas, distinguish related concepts, and apply learned concepts to relevant situations. This would suggest that structured peer explanation activities can contribute positively to conceptual learning among adult learners. The findings will have implications for teaching and learning in adult education programmes. Adult education instructors may incorporate peer explanation activities into lessons by assigning learners opportunities to explain concepts, discuss difficult ideas, and respond to questions from their peers. Such activities may encourage active participation and provide learners with additional opportunities to process and communicate their understanding of learning content. Adult learners, adult education instructors, programme coordinators, curriculum developers, and educational administrators are expected to benefit from the findings. Adult learners may develop deeper understanding through explaining and discussing concepts with peers, while instructors may gain a practical approach for promoting active conceptual learning. Programme coordinators and curriculum developers may also use the findings to strengthen collaborative learning activities within adult education programmes. The study recommends that adult education programmes should incorporate structured peer explanation activities into appropriate learning sessions. Instructors should provide learners with opportunities to explain concepts in their own words, ask and answer questions, and discuss alternative interpretations of learning content. It is concluded that peer explanation activities have the potential to improve conceptual understanding among adult learners and promote more active and meaningful learning.
